It might have been a bad idea to go straight to the Willy T, a barge that’s been transformed into a floating bar, on the first night of the new crews arrival. Especially since we had a 4 hour beat upwind the following day to Virgin Gorda.
…But it made for some awesome memories!
The night before the upwind passage, we were having a great time on the Willy T to include taking a few Fireball shots! However, the following morning wasn’t so pleasant as the ‘not so salty’ crew begun waking up with wicked hangovers.
We dropped off the mooring ball for an early morning start to ensure a good spot in Virgin Gorda. I put some bagels and fruit on the salon counter top knowing that it would be too rough to cook breakfast down below. At least the bagels would soak up some of the alcohol and the fruit was for those that couldn’t handle too much food. Little did I know that almost the entire crew would loose their breakfast to the sea very shortly.
Nicole (head on the table in the photo) was the first to make her way into the cockpit with a bowl then the rest of the crew followed. It wasn’t too long before the seas became rough, everyone was passing the bowl around. Hey, another reason it’s awesome having a fresh water wash down on the stern! It came in handy to rinse the bowl. Kevin (bent over in the back) chose to hang over the side of the boat rather than share a bowl. I think I would have done the same!
Jeremiah, Rhys, myself and Stephan (giving the thumbs up) were absolutely fine but we know the drill. Always look to the horizon and never go below. I tried to give that advice but they didn’t realize how important these minor adjustments really are.
A couple days later we hit another rough patch and the crew did absolutely fine so who knows, it could have been all due to the drinking. Either way, it’s a great memory for the books!
