Tropical Storm/Hurricane Prep

Hello everyone! We're knee deep in prepping for the storm that is probably heading our way in the next 24 hours or so. Weather Covers are down (to allow the wind to blow through easily), Taco is raised and stowed and we're working on securing the sails, etc today.

Is it scary? Umm...We're in a pretty sheltered location far from any inlet which was the plan for hurricane season. Concerned would be a better word to use this time! If it were a full blown hurricane hitting us dead on...That would be very scary. We're on the east coast of Florida, it's coming from the west so we hope she'll weaken a bit before showing her lovely face over here.

Either way, we're more prepared than any other boat in the marina we're at! So we might have gone a bit overboard, but there's nothing wrong with that! If any of you are in the storms path, we wish you the best of luck and will pray for your safety!

Love,

The Geckos <3

Sounds like you're having fun :)

Chris, oh my! I hope that everyone was ok!! Talk about the damage...That's exactly the type of issue we were worried about. About half of the boats in the marina took the jib down and the other half didn't. We contemplated and decided better safe then sorry, since we would be without a jib for a while if anything were to happen!! Plus it gave us practice in case we ever needed to take it down in a hurry!

Hey there friendly sailor! Thank you for the warm response! How was it for you guys?! We let Rhys stay up a bit later - We all snuggled in closely with some yummy snacks and movies!! It came pretty close to y'all so I hope that there wasn't any damage done!!

Safe and sound Todd 💕

All is good over here :)

Thanks for the wonderful advise! Being that I used to live in Florida for many years, I'm used to the Hurricanes...However, it's on a whole new level when you add in doing it on a boat with a baby!!

Lazy Gecko Sailing

Thank you! We always do 😘

Lazy Gecko Sailing

You are so right! One of our many concerns!!

Lazy Gecko Sailing

Roy, us too! Even though we prepared our Gecko and ourselves for the worse, just in case :)

During my RYA Day Skipper training course, this came through the marina, after dark: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_Storm_Delta_(2005) our 36ft yacht was heeled over at 30-45 degrees most of the night & we were docked! Pretty damaging to this poor sail https://goo.gl/photos/RiT1aUiL87eN684U8

Glad it is only a tropical storm. Been through a number of hurricanes, no fun there

Watch for the other boats. Never know when one might break loose and come knocking.

Be safe. Be smart. Be well.

Yes I'll pray for your safety and very glad you are going the extra for it.

I was in Daytona for both Hurrican Charley and Frances. Charley came across the state from the west and exited just south of Daytona beach. It stalled and regained all the energy it lost over land as it entered the Atlantic. Hurricanes feed off of warm most water, which is exactly what the golf steam produces off shore along the eastern seaboard. Stay on guard, any hurricane that crosses land can definitely regain all energy lost while over land.

Glad you all are in a safe harbor. You can NEVER be over prepared for a hurricane. Keep safe Geckos!

Sounds like you are taking all the appropriate precautions. Looking forward to seeing you safe on the other side of the storm...

Uggh. I thought of you guys when we saw it had clocked a bit further away from us in Pensacola and took a swift right to the east coast. You can never go overboard with hurricane prep. Whatever you're doing now can likely not be done (well or comfortably) in 30+ knot winds. Good luck guys. Phillip and I will be watching closely and think about you and the family and the boat!
