2025-03-22 21:19:08 +0000 UTCLesson time Mandy!!! 😁 VAT is value added tax. It's on every product and service you purchase (so for example you might pay VAT on driving lessons, not just physical items). In the UK and Europe it's at a rate of +20% of the item's price. In the USA you'll remember they have a shown shelf price and then they add the VAT on at the checkout. But, in the UK, the price you see on the shelf always includes VAT so that's what you pay. We do have "road tax" too which we pay every year depending on the age, size and environmental impact etc of the vehicle. GCE btw, I believe is "General certificate of education". Replaced now by GCSE "general cert. of secondary education." Which is what you get from graduating high school. I got an D in art... "Legless": excessively drunk.
Benjamin Taylor-Yates
2025-03-22 20:53:31 +0000 UTCThis show like a lot of others gets better as it goes on but this one becomes a masterpiece by the 3rd or 4th series, the characters become very dear to you and as someone who grew up about 10 miles from where this is based it's uncanny how accurately the characters and side characters mirror people I've known even the wives of the characters make familiar couples. This is a snapshot of those times when the pub was the centre of the social culture in London and the rest of the country.
David Williams
2025-03-22 20:32:16 +0000 UTCI think this choice will make a lot of people happy. Well done! I don't know if you've watched the new seasons of Frasier, but Nicholas Lyndhurst (Rodney) plays Frasiers British friend and colleague, professor Cornwall. Side note: I thought the new seasons of Frasier were really disappointing compared to the originals. I didn't even finish watching the second season. This show has a somewhat strange place in my life because when I was a teenager, a friend of mine had a dad who was really obsessed with this show. He had this really romanticised view of the 'wheeler dealer' lifestyle and very much saw himself, and tried to model his life, as Delboy. Ultimately though, he was just a petty criminal and seriously toxic human being who I eventually disassociated myself from. He did do some nice things for me over the years, but in the end, the whole situation was pretty messed up as he'd try to incorporate me and my friends into his stupid little schemes. Looking back on it, it was an interesting time in my life that I could probably write a sitcom about. It was truly a bonkers time. He ended up getting deported back to England for some reason. Oh yeah, he was from England and moved to Australia to be closer to his son ,my friend, who lived here with his mum and step-dad. I don't know if he ever came back after being deported. I hope you enjoy this. You're going to learn a lot of slang and old references from this show. I might also quickly mention that David Jason (Delboy) is also in an older show with Ronnie Barker called Open All Hours, about a corner shop owner that you might like to check out sometime. Thanks for sharing! 🤗 Toodle-oo!

2025-03-22 20:30:50 +0000 UTCYay! This is one of my all-time favourites and I'm really looking forward to seeing what you make of it 😊also I love the art teacher voice, that felt like it came from a place of real emotion! 😁

2025-03-22 18:26:17 +0000 UTCJust as you liked Peep Show the further along it went, you will find the same with Only Fools and Horses too. The characters are more fleshed out, more characters are introduced, the writing gets better etc. One minute you’ll laugh and the next minute you’ll cry. I promise you. Wally/twonk/dipstick/plonker are all slang for “idiot”, in a somewhat lighthearted manner. To get “legless” is to get drunk. ie. where you drink so much that your legs don’t work properly. You didn’t understand when Del Boy said ‘The only people who missed that (pointing to the view) were the Luftwaffe’. The Luftwaffe was the German Air Force during WWII who did bombing raids on London and many other cities. Did I hear correctly that you don’t draw/create art any more?! 😱

2025-03-22 17:52:18 +0000 UTCA market barrow ("barrah" in London-speak...) is traditionally a flat-topped cart (like a 2m x 1.5 metre tabletop) with two wheels near the middle and two long handles at the back to push it along (and balance) it. There are wood or steel legs at one end to stop the thing tipping over once you reach your spot. The stuff you are selling (vegetables, household goods, even fish back in the day, etc) is on the flat top and sold off teh barrow. There is a picture of a very old and knackered one in the second shot of the show's intro.

2025-03-22 16:44:14 +0000 UTCWasn’t expecting this one yet. Welcome to possibly the best written comedy show ever. Get ready to laugh and cry. There are quite a lot of emotional moments compared to most comedies. It takes a while to get going like most shows. Interesting what you said about doing one series at a time. I’d be ok with rotating shows. I don’t think OFAH needs to be binged. There is a bit of outdated language here and there, especially in the way Del describes women. Keep in mind it’s 40 years ago. Something to look out for. I don’t know how much French you know but… Del thinks he can speak French, but he gets it wrong every time. Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes you need to know what he said. We get taught French here.
Julian T
2025-03-22 15:06:46 +0000 UTCYEEEEEESSSSSSS! The show starts off slow, (it was actually in danger of being cancelled after 2 series due to low viewership and some upper class critics because in those days everyone who got on TV had to have a posh voice and this was one of the first main stream shows that showed the working class aka the poorer class of people, but it's audience grew and grew) it gets better and better each series. Also Grandad is their dad's dad so yeah their dad is not a nice person walking out on them and his own father.

2025-03-22 14:51:17 +0000 UTCIt's a good choice Mandy. It is indeed one of the classics and highly acclaimed, and though it's been a while since I watched it, I'll enjoy revisiting it with you. 🤗

2025-03-22 14:37:09 +0000 UTCShe who dares wins. If that isn't too culturally inappropriate, mange tous. This is the first time I've revisited the show since its original airing, almost exclusively for the added Mandy content. Though like Father Ted this show also brings back early memories, my little brother was born when we lived in a tower block in London.

2025-03-22 14:33:22 +0000 UTCI am delighted you're reacting to this, Mandy! Superb timing as Joel (ItsJPS) has just finished the whole show and his final reaction, saying goodbye to these characters 64 episodes and 22 years later (lots of gaps and the last few episodes were annual specials) was so moving. He was in tears (of joy for being introduced to the show and sadness at saying goodbye.) I really hope you do the whole show too, even though it is a long one and there are movie-length episodes in the mix later on too! 😃 You won't regret it and I just know your reactions are going to be amazing! 😃 The script by John Sullivan (the show's only writer throughout) is littered with British, more specifically Cockney slang. We'll translate some of this as it goes along! 😇 VAT - Value Added Tax. A consumption tax added to most goods sold. Certain exceptions, e.g. most food in supermarkets in the UK is VAT-exempt. "Legless" = drunk. Oyster milk is just the nickname for the creamy liquid inside an oyster. 😃 The show is very warm hearted and goes from silly to quite touching in a heartbeat. You'll notice that more and more, particularly in the later episodes. Series 1 (first 7 episodes) are quite low-key but it's amazing just how the show develops over the years. It really explodes in the best way. It's the same show later on but the writing just gets better and better and these are some of the most fleshed out characters in any sitcom ever! So glad you enjoyed this first episode! It does a great job setting the scene and I can't wait to watch this show again with you , Mandy! 🙏

2025-03-22 14:12:44 +0000 UTCYou don't even need to guess the combination on those briefcases, they're clearly not top quality and I've never encountered a combination briefcase which wasn't really easy to bypass. I learnt how to when I was 6 or 7 because I wanted to know what my brother was hiding in one. The opening slide tends to move the the wheels to the side a bit when they're in the wrong position so it's easy to work out what the combination is pretty quickly.

It's incredibly difficult for college students to get jobs now. Took me 4 months, I think collectively I applied to 36ish bottom of the barrel jobs, did at least 6 interviews. 2025-03-22 13:26:51 +0000 UTCDerek 'The Del Boy' Trotter is a French speaking small time criminal. Rodney 'The Plonker' Trotter is his educated younger brother who also appeared in Frasier. Grandad is an old man who lives with them. He likes television and cooking food for the two brothers. He is the father of Del and Rodney's father. Trigger is a wally. A wally is a foolish person. Boycie is a man. He will appear in future episodes. "Only fools and horses work" is a phrase meaning if you are smart, you don't need to work for a living. Simply start a reaction channel. I think most people in 2025 probably don't know the phrase or if they ever did probably associate it more with the programme now. This all takes place in a town or city called London. The bit of it that is called Peckham. I'm sure someone else can explain what a plonker and a dipstick are. This programme contains some racist terms, a few references to the Falklands War and/or Argentina and typical social attitudes of the time, so look out for those. I hope you enjoy it. It gets better as it progresses. You should take note of the broadcast dates because some episodes take place long after the previous one. It run for a long time but wasn't on air constantly.
Jeffrey44
2025-03-22 13:21:21 +0000 UTCI'm fairly sure wheelbarrows have 1 wheel Mandy :) But I think their use of barrow there might be an archaic London slang, because the only thing I can think of they mean is a portable stall for selling things from, which I wouldn't call a barrow
