Cunk on Britain - 2 - The Empire Strikes Back
Added 2024-10-20 13:00:08 +0000 UTCI LOVE these!!! I just had to watch another one! As I said, Phoenix Nights back next week, but for now, it's Philomena time! 🤪 Also, is Philomena a real name? Do people actually do that to their daughters? Condemn them to a life of ridicule?

2024-12-11 17:56:14 +0000 UTCI did history in year 7,8 and 9 I think but when I had to decide what to do in 10 and 11 I chose to do geography at gcse instead which was a mistake ngl

2024-12-11 17:48:58 +0000 UTCThe difference is Mock assumed that you know what they are talking about, whereas ...Wipe showed video clips as it describes what they're talking about, so even if Mandy doesn't already know all of the references, the videos clips help to explain anything that you don't know about. Together with the fact that lots also feature "Philomena Cunk's moments of wonder" sections which are the origin of what became the full stand-alone "Cunk on..." programmes I think Mandy would really enjoy the programs. Btw I forgot about GamesWipe, which I agree was also brilliant.
Rob Broadway
2024-11-19 11:37:43 +0000 UTCAnd may I add.. IDK why novody ever seems to mention the one-off Gameswipe where they go through the history of video games. There might be more references in that which Mandy understands, compared to old British news and celebrity guff judging by her previous Mock the Week reactions.

2024-11-19 03:14:04 +0000 UTCPhilomena Cunk was originally created with Charlie Brooker for the later series' of Screenwipe onwards. He is also a co-writter of her solo shows. Please watch Charlie Brooker's many programs, especially: Screenwipe, Newswipe, Weekly Wipe, How TV Ruined Your Life, Anti-viral Wipe, Death to 2020, Death to 2021

I saw a butt!" ..."His butt is out...out!!!"..."--he's wearing assless chaps"..."this is-is-is a great one too." 🤭 You managed a whole 50 seconds pointing and talking about butts. And Mandy - go to bed!!!

2024-10-24 10:57:52 +0000 UTCI will say there’s a few mispronounced name jokes that are understandably going over your head as you don’t know the references but you’re still picking up a lot of them 👏😂

2024-10-23 04:17:17 +0000 UTCMy favourite thing about this series is that Mandy is actually getting very decent (but very slightly wrong) history lesson on Britain 😂 she’s going through what we all went through in primary/high school 💀😂

2024-10-21 15:32:20 +0000 UTCOnly 3 of Henry the 8th's 6 wives were called Catherine, 2 were called Anne, and 1 called Jane. So she was joking when she said all his wives were called Catherine. And it's not the onion jack, she's purposely mispronouncing Union Jack. Take everything SHE says with skepticism and trust what the experts she speaks to are saying. I can just imagine you on a quiz game show and they show the Union flag and you pressing the buzzer and shouting ONION JACK!😆

2024-10-21 13:48:06 +0000 UTC“The youngest anyone has died of old age” that was amazing 🤣🤣 her deadpan delivery is just perfect! Also Mandy, about what you asked me on my peep show comment, I sent you a lil message on insta! Hope you see it 😊

2024-10-21 04:38:02 +0000 UTCFew points in this one: I know you have a thing with Butts; sadly you're gonna be seeing a lot of em in the art work 🤣 Edge of the world. Real fear for sailers at the time. Took a while before the Europeans proved the earth was round. There's a whole Drama series about Mary Queen of Scots on netflix called "Reign". Tho I got bored after the third series. (Of about 12) Yeah. History in school was long and lucrative but I hated it. There's a lot of names and boring stuff. That's what the "Horrible Histories" tv show was for. The royal family is a litany of inbreeding, drama and rapid changes of power. That in itself is a big subject. Don't worry about the Liam thing. If you live that lifestyle that tends to be how it ends as evidence shows. Gunpowder plot to blow up parliament. Interesting story, I'm surprised she glossed over it. We celebrate the foiling of the plot every year on bonfire night. By launching fireworks and burning effigies of Guido 'Guy' Fawkes. A spanish Catholic conspirator who was caught in the undercroft of the house of parliament after essentially being grassed up by his co-conspiritor who's relative was in parliament. It's the day before my b-day too!🎂. Trailers defo spoil films. Worst one I've seen was Rowan Atkinson's recent film: "Man Vs Bee"

2024-10-20 20:17:42 +0000 UTCYou would have been lucky and just missed the endless lists of royals era of history lessons if you were born in the UK. I only caught the tail end of it and I'm a decade older. It really put me off history for years, I hate the lists and dates approach.

2024-10-20 20:00:40 +0000 UTCI've been considering one of these for months now, one side of my ancestry was mapped out long before I was born going right back to 1100's. Would be interesting to see if the DNA backed that up. Just concerned about the potential for cyber attacks on your DNA data.

2024-10-20 19:45:17 +0000 UTCMost of us didn’t learn much about kings and queens at school. David Mitchell released a book recently about that very subject, which is apparently quite funny too, although I haven’t read it. I’d have time to read books if I didn’t spend so much time watching sport, YouTube and Patreon 😂

2024-10-20 17:29:12 +0000 UTCi don't remember doing very much history about kings and queens at school. The end of school G.C.S.E exam I did was Russian revolution and WW2, which wasn't really history at the time as my grandad who wasn't that old then was a soldier in the Italian campaign. Now they seem to make up history to suit a narrative.

2024-10-20 16:38:52 +0000 UTCIf you had the test done by a website, have you looked at your results on that website more recently? Because the site I use updates the estimates as more information becomes available over time. It is extremely unlikely, nigh impossible, if you have a long history of British ancestry that there will not be influences from continental Europe. If you had your DNA test done on the same site as I did, or one that also updates the results as more information becomes available, you may find your results have been considerably refined from the results you received a few years ago. My great grandmother was a Bonner.

2024-10-20 16:10:00 +0000 UTCI also wonder whether that would make us the bacteria!
Jonathan Pettitt
2024-10-20 15:54:02 +0000 UTC@Johnathan I was about to say, I know not everyone enjoys Britain but I wouldn't call it septic :)
irreverend
2024-10-20 15:50:35 +0000 UTCYou mean 'Sceptred Isle'. A sceptre is a decorated staff used by a monarch for ceremonial purposes. The particular reference to the land as a 'Sceptred Isle' comes from Shakespeare's play Richard II, where John of Gaunt refers to it as 'this Sceptred Isle' during his death-bed speech. However, another character who, like Philomena Cunk, frequently gets things wrong, DID refer to the UK as a 'Septic Isle', that being Del Boy from the comedy series Only Fools and Horses. 'Septic' does not mean green, it means infected by micro-organisms, particularly bacteria, which is why it was so funny when Del referred to the land as 'this Septic Isle'.
Jonathan Pettitt
2024-10-20 15:48:24 +0000 UTCPhilomena does a lot of mispronounced words that show her ignorance of most subjects, the first one is in the title sequence when she calls Great Britain a skeptic isle instead of a septic isle ( meaning green ) and calling the flag the onion Jack instead of the Union Jack ( jack being an old name for a flag), Charles I's son, Charles II, did hide in a tree at one point during the civil war to hide from some pursuers. In the original series, Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe, Philomena had a male counterpart, called Barry Shitpeas.
littlewazer
2024-10-20 14:24:24 +0000 UTCHave you ever considered taking an ancestry DNA test to see where your ancestors came from? I did mine a few years ago hoping I'd find links to Norway or France but no two thirds English one third Scottish

2024-10-20 14:18:41 +0000 UTCI can never remember the order of any of the Royals haha (well pre-Victoria anyway). In high school they seemed more interested in WW2. In middle school it was stuff like Aztecs and Egyptians (way more interesting 😂), we never really did much about Kings and Queens at my schools - not that I would have remembered anyway 😂 Great reaction as always Mandy! 😁
Steve with a beard
2024-10-20 14:17:03 +0000 UTCCould you imagine putting Karl, Philomena and Mandy in a room together. Their conversations would make everyone else's head explode 🤯

2024-10-20 13:30:25 +0000 UTCPhilomena is a real name, although not a common one here (I'd expect most people bearing the name in the UK to likely be over 80). Apparently it's most common in Nigeria though
