2024-10-20 01:31:04 +0000 UTCExactly my point, I saw one game where they were chanting about abusing children and women because one player was falsely accused of it, if course it's ok for some banter like the German bombers in the air song that's hilarious, but racism and talking about S abuse isn't funny

2024-10-19 15:32:57 +0000 UTCRacism is not anything like it used to be. I remember going to a Bolton match with my mate who was black. He was the only black person not on the pitch out of 30,000 people and had to listen to racist abuse shouted at players. Nobody bothered him, but it must have been pretty shit.

2024-10-18 20:59:16 +0000 UTC"Why would a monkey have pyjamas, is that just how that works over there?" Yes, we make the simians don nightwear. To have them walking around naked would be obscene.

2024-10-18 14:07:18 +0000 UTCThe shorter of the two actors is played by Kenneth Connor, who was most famously a member of the ensemble cast of the Carry On movies, 1958-1978, (and then one in 1992 that we don't talk about), a series of low budget, smutty comedy movies that wouldn't get made now because they weren't very politically correct, but are nevertheless remembered fondly by many of us who view them in the context of the time and still see the comedy in them. Anyway, Kenneth Connor was a staple of those and was an actor as early as the 1940s. Like many actors of the time, he had performance trademarks... I challenge anyone to find a Kenneth Connor movie in which he doesn't find cause to talk as if he has a stuffy nose. It'll either be by taking a punch to it, taking a door, or other blunt object to the face, simply having a cold, or, in this case, having his nose tweaked in a superstitious ritual. What an odd thing to specialise in! The other one I've noticed is that his trousers fall down in at least three movies I have seen. I've often wondered if these skills were on his rรฉsumรฉ, and if he ever landed a part based on them. ๐

2024-10-18 12:36:08 +0000 UTC- I never thought actors were "real", but when I was young and watching Crimewatch (a TV show asking the public for help finding criminals, somewhat similar to America's Most Wanted) I did wonder why the police just didn't arrest the criminals shown during the re-enactments as I thought they were the actual people. I also thought that a clock tower in my city was Big Ben despite being over 100 miles away from London! lol - On a completely random note, you talking about decorating made me have a look at house prices in Buenos Aires as I assume it being the Capital they would be the most expensive. If I sold my house I could either buy a massive one there or two houses, both still bigger than mine! (i'd never live in Argentina though)

2024-10-18 05:52:02 +0000 UTCMy understanding is that Howard Goodall - the man who wrote / performed the theme music - based the third series end credits song on Paul Simon's Graceland LP, simply because he was listening to it loads at the time (it was a new release at the time) and just wanted to write a tribute to it.

2024-10-18 05:28:28 +0000 UTC26:25 from what I've seen the English just throw their drinks in the air and start chanting insults to either their own team, a specific person on the pitch, the opposition, or the camera crew, or of it's in a pub they normally celebrate by beating eachother up and yelling racial slurs

2024-10-18 01:45:34 +0000 UTCHahahhahaaa! Well, I offered but it DEFINITELY turned out to be much more work than I originally thought. If the walls are nice and smooth, I like painting. Mandy Cane Lane
2024-10-18 01:44:27 +0000 UTCOh that's the beauty of the series (for me at least), I and most people only are vaguely aware of Romeo and Juliet and a little bit of other stuff. I got an unclassified in English Literature at GCSE, and an A in English Language. And I still hate English Literature, but it's undeniable that Shakespeare has affected many many TV and film tropes and plot themes you don't realise. And books you may have read which may have been inspired by or parodied his works. So I promise you, you need not know anything of Shakespeare to enjoy the series, but you might realise you know more than you thought, and you'll probably learn a bit about how he affected things you didn't realise he had, and it's just a really funny series :)

I think that would be wonderful and add that bit of badly needed extra oompf to... yeah, whatever it is you do. You really can't go too far or over the top with theatre. In the words of Frasier, "if less is more, then just think how much more, MORE would be!" Good advice right!? Your welcome. ๐

2024-10-17 20:25:04 +0000 UTCThe little joke from when Blackadder was looking for a new job that confused you. He mentioned a George Stephenson creating a mobile kettle. George Stephenson was a known revolutionary in steam locomotives, known for Stephenson's Rocket, one of the earliest steam locomotives. Funny enough the world's first train accident happened a few miles down the road from where I live, about 150+ years ago. A local well respected MP for Liverpool was at the opening of the local railway and he fell onto the track and was run over by Stephenson's Rocket. There is a memorial to him on the grounds of where the old station was. https://i.ibb.co/Jz2Zk8w/monument.jpg
Danny
2024-10-17 19:34:46 +0000 UTCAt some point you should really watch the TV series Upstart Crow, it's a comedy based on Shakespeare (played by David Mitchell) and a lot of the episodes parody his actual plays rather well.
irreverend
2024-10-17 19:18:26 +0000 UTCI think the reason for the superstition is because when a new play was doing badly or not well received, they'd just put on a performance of MacBeth instead of continuing it's run, or replace the matinee with a performance of MacBeth. I think it stems from something like that anyway, I could very well be wrong

2024-10-17 18:45:02 +0000 UTCWhen they say a travel kettle they mean a kettle you can take travelling with you. 2024-10-17 18:38:20 +0000 UTCHey! I feel you with the decorating. I despise paintingโI hate it with a passion. Yet, it seems like something I'm always doing. I paint my house, my sister wants hers done, and my parents want theirs done. It's never-ending. Like Peter Kay said, 'Old people, you can't beat them can you ... Pity'. ๐ As always, thank you, Mandy. ๐ค๐ค
๐ญ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐๐
2024-10-17 17:55:26 +0000 UTC"Why would a monkey have pyjamas? Is that just how it works over there? Is that just a gibbon?" We don't make gibbons wear them either. Also the guy who jumped onto the stage with the bomb was one of the writers - Ben Elton. The other writer - Richard Curtis, was interviewed by Philomena Cunk on comic relief. He was disgusted by her story about her mate Paul and what he did with a red nose. I have learned to fear the words: "My mate Paul..."

2024-10-17 17:39:16 +0000 UTCDecorating is always a job you regret starting. There's no backing out halfway through. Top tip - never decorate. Moving house is no simple task, but it's easier than decorating.

James Aston
2024-10-17 15:48:46 +0000 UTCAnd yes. Macbeth that is a real superstition in UK theatre, tho not so much recently. It's because of the terrible misfortunes that befell the Globe (I think that's the name) theatre in the time of Shakespeare. It burnt down twice while the "Scottish Play" was being performed I believe. The other viewers will know better than I. But yeah, since then it's been regarded as a bad omen. https://www.rsc.org.uk/macbeth/about-the-play/the-scottish-play Made me laugh today, I left my phone on the table and went for a shower. I panicked when I suddenly heard a high pitch noise kind of like someone wiping the windows or a ghostly giggle... and I'd left the door open. Turns out it was just Mandy laughing, I'd left Patreon running in the background ๐๐.

2024-10-17 15:30:13 +0000 UTCSo strange to see "The Stance" after real life politicians have started doing it, in real life, over the past decade or so. I guess some PR person remembered this episode and somehow has been getting away with training people to do it for nearly 2 decades.

2024-10-17 13:57:39 +0000 UTCWe certainly don't dress monkeys in pyjamas here. Even for us that would be silly. Although there used to be a commercial in the 90s with chimps drinking tea. That was quite silly actually
