Blackadder - S2 E1 - Bells

Comments

Bit of a silly question - but have you watched the first series yet? I can't see it anywhere on here or YT :)

Rob Pitt

I'm late to the party here, but I'd also highly recommend Allo Allo. And also, One Foot in the Grave.

Jack Nicholas

So That was weird

Joshyboiiiiii

Finally gonna tryπŸ˜… im always worried about new shows that ive not watched incase i hate it or you hate it, dont wanna be a bad patron if me no likey

Joshyboiiiiii

I think the main one was queenie i thought you would instantly but well you said you wasn’t sure bit gutted but ive lived with blackadder for about 36 years so im absessed . Hope you like her more as i watch her the rest of the series.

Superclarky666

I have no idea what you were expecting, but glad you enjoyed xD

Mandy Cane Lane

I must admit it was’nt the reaction i was expecting but it was entertaining😊

Superclarky666

YOU LIAR!!!! Ive recommended at least 2 on that list πŸ˜‚

Joshyboiiiiii

Should always look before commenting πŸ˜‚ I've found it 😁

Joshyboiiiiii

Hey Josh! I can't remember now, but somebody asked and I linked it in one of these comments if you are curious enough to search!

Mandy Cane Lane

I shall get around to watching this soon, ive just watched the intro and im curious... What was this top 20 list that you hadnt heard of any of the shows?? Ano you wont remember and you wont find it but thought I'd ask πŸ˜‚

Aaron

You should do a mega poll. I believe you can put up to 25 items on a poll and allow people to choose multiple options. That gives a good overview of what people enjoy. You could say you’ll choose one from the top 5, so that you don’t have to do number one.

Julian T

I think Mandy will get to know Rik Mayall as Greg Davies’ dad in Man Down (he also appears again later in Blackadder), but Bottom and Young Ones? I don’t think Mandy will enjoy them. The Inbetweeners is intellectual humour compared to those.

Julian T

Ahh, he does Brilliantly then! πŸ€—βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Haha, a huge accomplishment to make Lee Mack seem slow!

Mandy Cane Lane

I am sorry Steve, but I have to point it out.... you spelt WD-40 wrong... πŸ€ͺ Lol, what a terrible name for a car! πŸ€£πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Haha! I actually read this and forgot to reply! Haha, great note, thank you! πŸ€—πŸŒ»

Mandy Cane Lane

I think she does it very well, but just have to get used to the character πŸ˜…

Mandy Cane Lane

Haha, I will keep that in mind Gary! Glad you approve my choice!! πŸ€—βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Oh wow! Haha, that is awesome! Hope I don't get sick πŸ˜…πŸ˜¬

Mandy Cane Lane

This was helpful! Already added it in the nest one as you saw πŸ€—

Mandy Cane Lane

Noted! Will not over analise! Haha! I wish I could do more shows at a time, but I am currently doing 5 a week, so I am pretty swamped! All in good time though! πŸ™ŒπŸ»βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Interesting way to classify shows! Haha! Honestly I try to balance what my audience likes the most, with what I think I would like. I don't mind shows being old, all I want is for them to be funny! πŸ€ͺ

Mandy Cane Lane

Hahahha! Love how you all take my cognitive abilities into consideration! 🀣🀣. Red Dwarf, Bottom and Young Ones are all on my list! But I believe (if I remember correctly) they are all on the larger amount of total episodes side. Might take me a while! πŸ˜…

Mandy Cane Lane

OMG OMG OMG! That's it!! Drop Dead Fred!!!! I used to love that movie!!! Would have never placed him, THANK YOU!!! πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ™ŒπŸ»βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Glad to hear it Terje! Do you still remember stuff after 20 years? Wow, what's that like? πŸ₯ΊπŸ€

Mandy Cane Lane

Noted Captain! 🫑

Mandy Cane Lane

I love Bottom, and would love to see Mandys reaction but I do think it might be too gross for her. The Young ones, yeah, but being so surreal, you know how confused she gets ha ha

Captain Howdy

I used to have the Witchsmeller as my profile pic on FaceBook years ago

Captain Howdy

I think all of the seasons of Blackadder are worth watching. In order of best to worst they are 2, 4, 3, 1. And the one shots are all ok but nothing amazing.

Captain Howdy

Hey - I think this is a good choice. Another one I've seen before, but looking forward to see again with a new perspective, and in Mandy Visionℒ️. I have the DVD collection somewhere, must be 20 years since I bought that, but only watched it once back then.

Terje FlΓ₯gan

As others have said, Lord Flashheart was played by beloved UK comedian Rik Mayall. Maybe you recognise him from his brief attempt to break through into Hollywood in the movie 'Drop Dead Fred'? Or maybe it's because he and Greg Davies look alike somewhat and share some facial mannerisms, which is one of the reasons why Greg Davies asked him to play his Dad in 'Man Down')

Spacedone

For legendary UK comedies if "Red Dwarf" isn't on your list too, then it definitely should be! :) They are saying "maam", not "mom" (we never use "mom" in the UK always "mum") Every series of Blackadder is self-contained.. so you are not missing any context from series 1. It's not that it's bad, it's just that series 1 is unlike series 2, 3 & 4 (which are all critically acclaimed) - series 1 kinda took itself more seriously.. and the characters (you'll see) weren't quite right yet You can see why we do this, as you're somewhat confused and unsure about continuing even after this episode anyway 🀣 Definitely keep watching Blackadder, it's one of the greatest - no doubt Lord Flashheart at the end of the episode was played by the mighty Rik Mayall. You'll become more familiar with him when you get to the shows "Bottom" and "The Young Ones" Cheers!

Wagoo

By the way, that list of top 50 shows you linked, I’m familiar with all 50 and you can’t go wrong by picking from that list. So read the synopsis and see what stands out. Allo Allo would be another silly 80s one to follow Blackadder. I’m sure you’ll always try to strike a balance between older shows and modern shows. That list is obviously older shows. Some of them are quite light. I always categorise sitcoms into 8pm shows, 9pm shows and 10pm shows. Because some are adult oriented, some are family friendly, and some are in the middle. The family friendly ones can be a bit boring sometimes, but they’re all worth a try.

Julian T

You have chosen wisely. I was hoping for something different, for selfish reasons, because I watched this recently. But no complaints. S4 is the best, everything is leading up to that. Queenie is the best character in S2. IMO it steps up a notch when Hugh Laurie joins. Overall it’s extremely silly and over analysing it can lead to madness.

Julian T

An adder is a brand of snake. Do you know that? I don't think you have them in America or Argentina so you might not. That's why a black snake appears at the start. I hope this was helpful.

Jeffrey44

Mandy, I've just worked out, this is the 33rd week of 2024. You have 17 episodes left (of series 2, 3, and 4). If you manage to do one each Thursday, you'll have completed the big 3 and will be able to release "Blackadder's Christmas Carol" (of the best Christmas specials ever made) on Christmas week. In fact, boxing day is a Thursday. What a treat that would be. ☺️

Tony Mingoia

Yes, I didn't think much of Back and Forth, but Christmas Carol is about as perfect as a Christmas special can be. Let's hope Mandy gets to all of it in the name of completionism. I'll gladly give Back and Forth another go in Mandy's company.

Tony Mingoia

Great choice! Season one of Blackadder is very different but two of season one episodes are actually some my favourites. Namely, the Witchsmeller Pursuivant & The Queen of Spains Beard, episodes. If anyone ever tried to watch season one and gave up after the first few, I can highly recommend giving episodes 4 & 5 a go.

Gary S

I totally agree. Baldrick was the one with a cunning plan, and Edmund was a bit of a scheming dim-wit.

Jason Webb

Miranda Richardson is fantastic as Queenie in this!

(Just) Steve

πŸ™Œ

Josh Read

I am not a natural redhead, but It'll take it πŸ˜ŽπŸ’…πŸ»

Mandy Cane Lane

Yeah, a firey redhead who doesn't take any nonsense.

Josh Read

Because you said I was the Queen πŸ˜…πŸ€£

Mandy Cane Lane

Why would you think that πŸ˜•

Josh Read

Oh! And just 1 more note before the next episode, episode 2 was actually filmed first. So Percy will have his beard back in the episode that he shaved off permanently in this episode πŸ˜… messes up the continuity a bit

Danny

What is the name of episodes in "s0"? Sounds like the specials. Cavalier Years,Blackadders Christmas Carol and Blackadder Back & Forth (which rounds off the Blackadder series). Watch them after series 4. I'll send you the pilot when you are near done. I have the new updated version of Back and Forth, which is remastered and had the laughter track added, as it originally didn't have one, which I think hurt it

Danny

Oh, well you have now πŸ™‚ and I can tell you it's good. Funny, silly, british, short, ticks all the boxes

.

I appreciate random! Already on my list Carl! πŸ€—βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Nope, never even heard of that show 🀭

Mandy Cane Lane

Thanks for correcting my memory of the writers! I also forgot to mention that I only wrote that bit to explain why Series 1 is different from the others... 🫒

BobSandwiches

Other good shows are Ghosts (the UK one). With Charlotte Richie and Katie Wix from Taskmaster. Also, Upstart Crow with David Mitchell for more of that historic Beb Elton vibe. There is a character in there thats a parody of Ricky Gervais

Carl-Fredrik L

Miranda Richardson (queenie) was in the latest series of Good Omens on Netflix, not that you would recognise her but might have seen her before

.

This is random. But for a new series apart from Blackadder i suggest Ghosts

Carl-Fredrik L

🩡🩡🩡

Mandy Cane Lane

It’s all good Mandy, this is an excellent show.😊

π‘π’†π’Šπ’”π’•π’š 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆

Thank you Josh! Glad I seem to have chosen well! πŸ€—βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

I literally do not know if that was meant to be insulting or not πŸ˜•

Mandy Cane Lane

Hahaha, well it does have a great comedic effect! 🀣

Mandy Cane Lane

Well that is a relief! Haha, glad you think so! 🩡✨️

Mandy Cane Lane

πŸ₯³πŸ€—

Mandy Cane Lane

Any and every explanation is always appreciated! Haha, thanks guys, and sorry Steve, I know you had your heart set on Derek. Soon! πŸ€—

Mandy Cane Lane

Hmm... Do you think I would have remembered anyway? πŸ€”πŸ˜…

Mandy Cane Lane

Thank YOU for providing the show! 🩡 And ok, I will check it out! πŸ€—βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Hahaha, it wasn't on the poll... I kind of just pulled it from inside my sleeve like a magician πŸ‘πŸ»βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Awesome! Yeah, my advisors have proven very trustworthy. πŸ€—βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Oh yeah, I wanted to ask. I have 3 files marked as S0 ... when do I watch those? πŸ˜… And The pilot could be interesting! For now though, series 2 all the way through, then well see because I get lost easily πŸ˜…

Mandy Cane Lane

So what I am hearing is I would have been extremely confused having watched series 1 first and then moving on to 2. 🀣🀣

Mandy Cane Lane

Awesome! So relieved I didn't mess it up! Haha

Mandy Cane Lane

Yay! I am so glad! πŸ€—πŸ©΅

Mandy Cane Lane

It is most definitely on my list! πŸ™ŒπŸ»βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Really? Wow, I never knew that. He does an amazing job in that case πŸ™ŒπŸ»βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Ypu calling me squeaky Josh? πŸ˜…

Mandy Cane Lane

What's with the mouse? And what is up with ploppy? πŸ˜…

Mandy Cane Lane

Oops 🀭

Mandy Cane Lane

OK cool! Ah yeah, didn't put William Shakespeare and this time period together. I am a lot like Karl in that sense... everything was ages ago 🀣

Mandy Cane Lane

Awesome, thank you for all the help! πŸ€—βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Haha, awesome! Hope you still find it funny today Gary! πŸ€ͺπŸ€—

Mandy Cane Lane

Underatandable, but it feels diabolical starting from series 3. Starting from series 2 is already odd πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

Mandy Cane Lane

HAHAHHAHA! Maybe she does 🀣🀣

Mandy Cane Lane

Ahhh, OK! Does he really? He does a spectacular job then! Never noticed. And I like weird πŸ€ͺ

Mandy Cane Lane

Yeah absolutely no pressure at all Mandy! We enjoy watching anything with you πŸ€—

AWR93

Glad you approve! 🩡✨️

Mandy Cane Lane

I like weird, and great to know each series gets better! πŸ™ŒπŸ»βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

Awesome! Glad to have been able to conform to the masses! πŸ€ͺπŸ€—βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

All very informative Ash, thank you! 🩡 And expect much more confusion!! πŸ€ͺ

Mandy Cane Lane

As always, you are excused Mr 44. 😌 Yes, I noticed his resemblence to Lorde Greg Davies, this explained why. And my boom mic spotting abilities may not be as hoaned as yours, but I am still proud of them πŸ€ͺ

Mandy Cane Lane

Hahahhaa, it sounds like I would have been much more confused if I had! πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

Mandy Cane Lane

In your own good time Mandy. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy watching BlackAdder with you.

Rusty Dog

Also, there's Blackadders Christmas carol, and Blackadder back and forth! Although I haven't seen much of the later, and don't recall being very excited by it. I should give it another look. Or just wait till you get to it!

Stevus

Great choiceπŸ‘, well🀞anyway. Hope you enjoy it. I think it will help when you get to know the characters better, some of which recur in later seasons, and some characters don't but the actors do. Stephen Fry is in every season I think, the actress playing the Queen is in s3 and 4 as well, but only in single episodes. Anyhoo, did you know there is a 4WD made by Nissan called Pajero. I was thinking, it's a shame it wasn't a bus they named that. πŸ€πŸ€—πŸ«Ά

Stevus

I recognised about 60% of the names. It is as I thought most of that list aired between the 50s and early 2000s hence why you and I don't recognise all of em. Keeping up appearances I think was the UKs most popular TV show abroad. Porridge and a few other titles feature Ronnie Barker who is extremely fast with his witt. Loved that series. He would make Lee mack seem slow. The thin blue line featuring Rowan Atkinson, I like that one too. 😊

Benjamin Taylor-Yates

Yay Tee Tee! Glad I didn't mess up! Haha! πŸ€—πŸ©΅

Mandy Cane Lane

"Queenie" 🀣🀣 Thank you for all the explaining! πŸ€—πŸ©΅

Mandy Cane Lane

I'm sure someone else has mentioned it BUT Rowan actually has a stammer and struggles with the letter B. He over articulates the letter to combat it.

Mike M

Noted Benji! https://www.comedy.co.uk/tv/top/ This was the list I think... top 50 and I only recognise about 10 πŸ˜…

Mandy Cane Lane

Oh the pressure is ON! Haha. I will get to everything, just give me time! πŸ˜…

Mandy Cane Lane

Oh well that is great to hear! Thank you! πŸ€—πŸ©΅

Mandy Cane Lane

They are on my list! The thing is... my list is too long! Haha. I am making my way throught it, but I will get to those shows! πŸ™ŒπŸ»βœ¨οΈ

Mandy Cane Lane

I have no idea, but I read "good choice" so I am happy πŸ€ͺ

Mandy Cane Lane

I've always felt like the character roles were kind of reversed in season 1 (or technically s2). In season 1 Baldrick and Percy seemed a bit smarter than Blackadder, or at least on par, but became more imbecilic in season 2.

Stevus

R.I.P Speckled Jim.

π‘π’†π’Šπ’”π’•π’š 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆

Bob/Kate does return in series 4. You may be thinking of that? Although, I don't recall any pigeon impersonations.πŸ€”

Stevus

Good choice. I saw the first series, incidentally named "The Black Adder", when it originally aired. It was funny for its time and has its moments, but it's not what a lot of people consider a classic Blackadder series. Series 2 is definitely the place to start. As others have already mentioned to you, there's not really anything from series 1 that carries over into series 2. It's set in a totally different period of history and basically just features an ancestor of the Blackadder you see here in series 2. In addition, the character of Baldrick didn't inherit his most well-known attributes until season 2. In season 1, he's quite a different character.

Jason Webb

I’m surprised afterlife or derek hasn’t been reacted too yet, great reaction as always thoughπŸ˜ƒ

GeordieJordan96

Only fools and horses is usually #1 on most lists - and rightfully so! I’m looking forward to when Mandy gets round to it! ☺️

AWR93

I heard Mandy was thinking of watching Derek, but I'm not sure where. Also, I find it hard to believe somebody called Miranda could squeak so loud.

π‘π’†π’Šπ’”π’•π’š 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆

Got to love The Goodies.

π‘π’†π’Šπ’”π’•π’š 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆

Ah, OFAH and One Foot in the Grave - both wonderful for different reasons. I think at least OFAH gets the praise it deserves but One Foot in the Grave is a comic and sometimes tragi-comic masterpiece that never really did and is often even misremembered as a sitcom about an old grumpy person and not much else when it was so much more than that - dark, amazingly well plotted, and superbly acted, with David Renwick delivering genius script after genius script. It's my favourite British sitcom of all time. πŸ™

Ash Jeffries

Mandy you chose AMAZINGLY once again! I'm super hyped to see you react to the rest of this 😁 also your boom mic spotting skills are, as always, insane!

DriveIn

Well, if you really want to embrace British comedy, then you have to sink your time into BlackAdder. It's on the must-watch list along with series' that go on for much longer such as Only Fools & Horses and One Foot in the Grave. Both pinnacle sitcoms. I was hoping for Derek, but then you did complete 2 series, so I'm clinging on to some hope. :) However, BlackAdder is a fine choice and one I've watched through a number of times as I have the box-set. Season 2,3 and 4 are great and all in different time periods. There's one episode I'm particularly looking forward too in Season 3. :) So yeah, stick with this one, you'll be glad you did. Miranda Richardson as Queen Elizabeth is excellent. Aah dear sweet Rik Mayall as Lord Flashheart. Great comedian/actor. Enjoy it Mandy!

Rusty Dog

There's nowt wrong with owt what mitherin' clutterbucks don't barley grummit. Isn't that right Jeffrey?

Tony Mingoia

Rowan wrote the first series with Richard Curtis. For series 2-4, Rowan no longer wrote and it was written by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. πŸ™‚

Ash Jeffries

I do find it interesting and I have now made a note of how you address your Mother.

Jeffrey44

I thought it was 'Slack Bladder'.

π‘π’†π’Šπ’”π’•π’š 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆

It is similar to IT crowd it takes a few episodes to settle in. It's old but it's good tho. And yes we do pronounce Ma'am as [ma-rm] we also use the term 'Lieftenant' [lef-tenant] instead of Lieutenant for army ranks. This will become relevant later. Of that list of 20 best comedy Series etc: you said you didn't recognise half of em. Which ones didn't you recognise?? (Bare in mind a lot of 'famous' British comedy's are from the past 60 years so there will be old ones and I imagine the voters will be older as well)

Benjamin Taylor-Yates

If I recall correctly, Rowan wrote the first series by himself, but it did not do as well as hoped and was very expensive to shoot (a lot of location shooting) so the BBC were thinking of dropping it until he got Ben Elton (very popular comedy writer at the time) to co-write it with him and set 95% of the whole show in two sets. Elizabethan gentlemen did sometimes wear a single pearl-drop earring. But it was not common for older gentlemen - it was a fashion thing. This is a BBC show - if there is one thing the BBC know how to do, it's Period settings and costumes! 😁 Basically, Queenie (Elizabeth I) is, emotionally, an over-pampered 12-year-old little girl with the power to have all and any whim carried out immediately - by the English army and navy if necessary... Hence the screech that only bats can hear the full effect of...πŸ˜‰ There is a lot of play on British stereotypes in this, but I don't think not knowing them will detract from enjoying it. "Ma'am" is short for madam - pronounced in Britain as "Mahm" - single syllable...

BobSandwiches

Good choice Mandy ! πŸ‘ I've seen all the Blackadders hundreds of times thanks to it being my dads favourite show, he's always watching it. It's one of those that seem to get funnier each time you see it, in my opinion the last series was the best and Blackadder I found to be Rowan Atkinson at his best.

Tee Tee

Now that ive watched the reaction to add. You didnt miss anything by not watching season 1. I think you would have been just as confused (if not more so) if you had watched season 1, since it is set in a completely different time period and with a different generation of some of the characters. Also the tone and style of the show are very different in season 1.

Ajayrious

Excuse me. Lord Flashheart is played by the actor and comedian Rik Mayall. I have some sad and troubling news for you, Rik Mayall died in 2014. After his death, his soul inherited the body of Taskmaster star Greg Davies. That's why you think you recognise him even though I don't think you have seen him in anything before. Davies now has some of the same speech patterns and mannerisms so it's actually the Taskmaster you are thinking of when you see Lord Flashheart. The boom mic you noticed was at least the third one that I spotted in this episode. I was going to say that I had never seen this before but it turns out that I remember the story line with Kate/Bob pretending to be a boy. However, it must have been a long time ago as I actually had a false memory of her pretending to be a pigeon. I think you said Blackadder correctly but I've also heard people say it as "Fat Chadder". Look out for MPox. It's apparently the next big thing. The M stands for Monkey.

Jeffrey44

Great reaction, Mandy! Your confusion only made it all the more entertaining! Every series of Blackadder is set in a different time period. This second series is Elizabethan (Elizabeth I), we then move into different times with series 3 and different again, series 4. In my view, series 1 didn't work, series 2 is great, series 3 is excellent, and series 4 absolutely superb. It gets better and better from series 2 onwards. As others have said, "Ma'am" is a contraction of Madam which we Brits mostly pronounce "Marm" (pronounced mainly "Maaaahm" in the US I believe). Where US say "mahm" for mom, we don't say mom at all and if we did it would be "mom" with the same "o" as "Bob". The black snake at the start is an adder (a type of snake) hence "Black Adder" πŸ™‚ Bernard is pronounced differently here to the US too - we say "Ber-nuhd" and Americans say "Burr-NARD" with the real emphasis on "NARD" πŸ˜‚ Weird and wonderful differences of English pronunciation on two sides of the pond. 😎 This show is as British as it gets, partly because of its basis in our history, but also how eccentric and dry by turns the humour is. It would be an experience certainly for someone who's never seen anything like it - as was proven by your first viewing πŸ˜‚ - but I hope you grow to love it. Flash was played by Rik Mayall although I cannot off-hand think what you have seen him in. Famous for The Young Ones, Bottom, and more recently, Man Down (playing Greg Davies' father.) Very sadly passed away in 2014, aged just 56. 😞

Ash Jeffries

But 9 letters. Blackadder is 10.

Jeffrey44

Great decision Mandy.. I was thinking with the end of Fawlty Towers Thursdays would be ruined... but Thursdays are saved!! Also good on skipping season 1. I'm not sure calling it bad is accurate, but its a very different show compared to the rest.

Ajayrious

A contraction of "madam" which is pronounced like "marm" in the UK and "mahm" in the US.

Ash Jeffries

Blackadder is one of the classics - with Edmund Blackadder being one of the best comedic characters of all time - certainly in Season 2, 3 and 4 .. It can be a bit weird at times and sometimes some of the jokes are British specific .. but simply brilliant

Jay

I agree, but i think shell need 2 to get warmed up

Carl-Fredrik L

Many people are commenting about Rowan Atkinson's speech impediment (which he does have), but he has stated many times that he says Bob the way he does simply for comedic effect. Like that one time, you looked at your watch........but there was no watch. 😐

π‘π’†π’Šπ’”π’•π’š 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆

πŸ‘

Z is for Zed

Mam as in ma'am. She is not his mom. He is saying maam. Also, Roan Atkinson has a speech impediment. Thats why he says B that way. And the writers know it! Ps. Miranda Richardson as Queenie is amazing I know this show is weird. Youll get into it. By series 4 youll be hooked. Especially by the end

Carl-Fredrik L

Great choice and great start Mandy! πŸ˜„ Perfectly fine to start with S2 as others have said, the seasons aren't connected. I love how the queen basically acts like a little kid πŸ˜† And that shriek! I wonder if Kayleigh from Car Share has any royal blood in her!

Dextrous (Lewis)

Good choice! I've never been a huge fan of Series 2, although it's still good. Series 3 and 4 are much better!

Tom

I think the mistaking people as men and women was a nod to Shakespeare since he seemed to have a lot of that in his plays. And the 4th wall breaking when Bob looks at the camera after Percy says she has balls, and Queenie saying she has a crush on Flashheart

irreverend

Yeah, I just never really took to that series. I think I probably missed it when it first aired, so that wouldn't have helped either.

irreverend

He was calling the Queen "ma'am", which is a term of address for female royalty.

irreverend

Blackadder is more like a combination of Baldrick and Percy in series 1. He is the smart "straight man" in the rest surrounded by the idiots

Danny

Each Season is a different era, where they play different characters, so skipping Season 1 won’t have made you any more confused than you are already πŸ˜ƒ. The show is pretty good, it has its moments. So, not a bad choice πŸ™‚. And gets better with every season. I found it hilarious as a teenager, in the 1980s, and watching it today, I can see why a 16 year old me, found it funny back then. That’s not to say you won’t enjoy it. 🀞🏼 Just for clarity, they are addressing the Queen as Ma’am (not mum or mom) which is how you’re supposed to address a Queen. Just to remove any confusion πŸ˜ƒ

Gary Tamblyn

Yay Blackadder. Glad you skipped the first series too, I never really enjoyed that one, I felt Rowan Atkinson's character in that one was too snivelling, although Brian Blessed was good in it

irreverend

I'm surprised about our Queen preferring the American pronunciation. I thought she would have found it very northern; I call my mum 'mam'. I think Jeffrey44 will also find that interesting.

π‘π’†π’Šπ’”π’•π’š 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆

The earrings are perfectly normal for the time. Blackadder and Percy are both Lords as is Stephen Fry's character, Lord Melchett. If you look up William Shakespeare, who is from this time period, he is always wearing earrings

Danny

Yes, I would add that Ma'am is the same as the American word Ma'am, it's just that in America it rhymes with "ham", and in the UK it rhymes with "harm". I've actually heard that our recently departed Elizabeth II actually preferred the American pronunciation, interestingly. I'd also add that Blackadder is a "courtier" to the Queen, as is Melchett and Nursie. Members of her court. Not related to her, just friends or advisors to the Queen who spend time with her.

Tony Mingoia

Not mom. Ma'am. It's an old word to address female royalty

Danny

🐭

π‘π’†π’Šπ’”π’•π’š 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆

yea you should, its a classic. so many ppl have recommended it.

Industrialist2015ofUk

OMG Mandy is the queen πŸ‘Έ 🀣🀣🀣 give it a few more episodes and hopefully you will have gotten into it a bit more

Josh Read

Rowan Atkinson has a stutter/stammering problem with the letter B. To get around it he has to accentuate the pronouncing of the B

Danny

I have never seen Dark Place, but I've decided to wait in case Mady watches it.

Love Blackaddder. Great Choice <3

Roman 'Arathir' Mikala

An excellent choice, Mandy. A classic, I hope you enjoy them. I've not had a proper full watch-through in a while, looking forward to it. Thank you. Let's Gooo. πŸ‘πŸ€—

.

All the series are completely unrelated. They are members from the Blackadder (and Baldrick) family tree from different points in history

Hurray! 😁You can always come back to series 1 after. It is way different and the budget is far less. I recall reading they had to reuse old BBC period drama costumes from other shows and could only afford 1 horse or something like that. The Blackadder character is completely different too. There is an unaired pilot of the show too which was long lost till like last year. I have that. You can watch it affer series 4 , as theres 3 specials, so 4 specials including the pilot. I got a few extra documentary/behind the scenes stuff too if you ever wanted to see those at some point

Danny

But 9 letters. Blackadder is 10.

You were advised well. If you come to really love Blackadder by the end, it’s worth circling back to S1 if you’re curious, but it’s completely non-essential and very different to what works in the rest of the show.

Great choice Mandy! Blackadder is one of the best sitcoms of all time, and doesn't get reacted to as much as it deserves, probably because the copyright is difficult. By the way, I know people warn you off of the first series, but the reactors I've seen who watched it anyway, such as Taffe and AfterWork Josh, really liked it. The comedy wasn't quite as broad as the later ones, perhaps relied a little more on the viewers' knowledge of history, and the characters weren't very well developed yet, but it had an obviously big production budget, with epic location filming, and scores of extras, some comedy legends acting in it, (I won't spoil it by telling you whom) and each episode had a funny and unique story. "The Queen of Spain's beard" is a particularly good episode if you decided to just check one out. And I do encourage you to. But since there is no continuity between series, you can do that at any time. The only thing with Blackadder is that the last episode of each series must be seen last in the set. The order doesn't matter otherwise. Maybe as a little extra, you could watch just that one episode at the end of this series? And decide based on that whether to do them all? Thanks so much Mandy, I look forward to this. πŸŒΉπŸ€—

Personally I’d have recommended season 1 as some small things get carried through as references in later seasons. But on well, make sure to watch the specials as well.

Conor Murphy

"Bury me in a Y-shaped coffin!" She was very promiscuous, (β…„) think about it🀣 Back in those days, women would never wear trousers, which is why he thought she was a boy. It was good to see Kes make a special appearance. It's Ma'am as in madam, she is Queen Elizabeth I. She is very squeaky. That was brilliant, you are in for a wild ride. As always, thank you, Mandy.πŸ€—πŸ€—
