We have fancy dress costumes, ball gowns are worn at balls, and im somewhat familiar with the term robe to mean dressing gown, but in the absense of any context, a robe to me would refer to the outdoor variety. Bath robe, sure. Unambiguously a dressing gown 😁

I know what you mean about that whole scene with the leotards. I hate awkward stuff too. The film Elf springs to mind. I know everyone else loves it but nah...too cringy for my taste. It's worth mentioning that this episode of The IT People was made before Catsdown existed. Countdown was recorded in Leeds, UK in those days. It, and Catsdown, is now recorded in Salford, UK so they may not have taken the chairs from Leeds to Salford. They MIGHT be using different chairs now. Countdown has been on Channel 4 since 1982 and was the first programme ever shown on that channel. Nowadays it is shown every weekday afternoon. There are no teams, just single contestants. The winning contestant comes back each day and wins a teapot after their first win. The loser of each episode receives a book by Suzi Dent. A new challenger joins each day to try to beat, and therefore become, the champion. The campion can come back a maximum of 8 times before they are forced to retire, hence the club in The Internet People being called 8+. Someone who has won 8 episodes is known as an Octochamp. The contestants with the highest combined scores across their 8 games are invited back at the end of the year to compete to become the series champion. Theses episodes involve contestants getting loads of 8 and 9 letter words that most people have probably never heard of as well as some real tough mathematics. The series champion gets to hold, but not keep, the Richard Whiteley Memorial Trophy. Richard Whiteley was the original presenter (or host as an American would say) and served for over 4000 episodes before he died in office. A photo of him was on the wall of the 8+ club.
