2023-11-26 17:18:33 +0000 UTCHiya Mandy, 7:33 That monkey on the coat-rack reference is a bit dated, Johnny Vegas did a series of successful commercials round that time for PG Tips with that puppet monkey animated in the ads. Here’s one prime example ad: https://youtu.be/fzxBdJt9OhY No dialogue in this one, but perfectly captures the heart of it. Johnny does refer to the puppet as “Monkey” in the others.“Monkey” was Brent’s impression of Johnny, and monkey’s t-shirt just says sidekick. Louis CK was cancelled, admittedly not for any particular joke he told, but he estimated he lost about $35 million in deals in the aftermath. One Dan Friedman said on twitter “Cancel culture doesn’t mean that somebody’s audience abandons them, it means that institutions act to attempt to sever a person from their intact audience” which isn't quite the same as all your subscribers suddenly deciding to unsubscribe! He's still selling out shows at Madison Square Garden. Now Michael Richards who played Kramer off Seinfeld, he’s the only example I know, off the top of my head (and my head recalls very little) who effectively got “cancelled” for one particular standup performance. He went on a racist tirade against hecklers while performing at the Laugh Factory. Evidence is on YouTube, it’s ugly. 😬 It does take some intellectual gymnastics to tackle those hot button topics, Ricky Gervais says he stands by everything he’s said, and also since he started late in life, he hasn’t come from the same comedy route as most other comics, so hasn’t had any early career regretful misadventures on his journey. Also he’s a philosopher, who’s bread and butter is dissecting the nuance in these things. His jokes are well crafted and well targeted. There’s no danger of him getting “cancelled”. That’s my take on it anyway. G

2023-09-29 10:50:24 +0000 UTCIt was a potato with cocktail sticks in it. Traditional British party food since the 70s. The cocktail sticks traditionally have cheese and pineapple on them, they may have a pickled onion or a lil hot dog on the stick with cheese too https://i.ibb.co/TLKsLdP/Hh.jpg

2023-09-29 06:28:32 +0000 UTCOf course not, but people get offended so easilyy lately, and comedians strive so much to be liked by all, that they censor most of their jokes. Topics that strived before and have made for amazing comedy specials are now untouched because most of it gets misconstrued as racsism or discrimination when there is no mal intent other than to get a laugh.
Mandy Cane Lane
2023-09-29 06:04:48 +0000 UTCExactly what Industrialist is saying. Being 'Cancelled' or 'cancel culture' meaning everyone nowadays is so afraid to get trashed by the media for anything misconstrued as discrimination or rascism. People are so scared to offend they watch every word they say and every joke they make. Fat jokes are now 'fat shaming'. Jokes about race or culture can only be made by people of said race or culture, except everyone can make fun of white people because there is nothing racsist about that. Jokes about women are sexist. and the list goes on and on when comedy should just be comedy. Shows that were huge hits back in the day like Friends or Mike & Molly could never be made nowadays because people would be "too offended". Two clips come to mind, the first is Rihanna trying to not offend anyone and coming off as absolutely ridiculous: https://youtube.com/shorts/h4Muk8Ji5zI?si=LUDdZKLpdGEw_VVC And the second is Ricky speaking facts: https://youtube.com/shorts/fUIe0X464Tg?si=2VxKCjELqAABhozk

2023-09-29 02:00:11 +0000 UTCI love Ricky's views on comedy and admire how he always says what he thinks about the topic! I think he is so smart about it that no one can make a proper argument against him

2023-09-29 01:37:48 +0000 UTCnever really thought about it, not my industry! but, of course theres no such thing as being cancelled. theres nothing written down by rule or law for these people to be deprived of work. Agreements and deals are going to happen regardless of what majority thinks or says in the media. but what i said and mandy said is a coined term to which ppl generalise the outcome of a celebrity being in "the wrong" in these social and political changes in these times...if we're being serious here.

2023-09-28 23:55:04 +0000 UTCI don’t get what you mean by cancelled and censored? Who has that happened to? If you made a statement that all of your patrons disagreed with. And we all unsubscribed. Would you say you’d been cancelled? Because that’s all that is happening. People decide they don’t want to spend money on certain comedy. Businesses decide on who they do business with based on shared values. The alternative is people should be forced to consume content, or Jewish comedy club owners being forced to hire comedians who make Holocaust jokes. We are free and allowed to do what we choose. There’s no such thing as being cancelled. No one is entitled to an audience or a stage.
Sara-Jayne
2023-09-28 22:49:28 +0000 UTCComedians are not being censored and cancelled. I don’t know what Mandy’s talking about. Dave Chappell and Ricky still get Netflix specials and sold out stadiums. There’s no such thing as cancel culture. It’s what racists and queer phobes like to cry when someone says I don’t like your comedy. Nobody is free from criticism, nobody is entitled to a platform and nobody deserves or should expect unanimous praise for their art. Especially when it’s intended to be provocative. Free speech goes both ways. They can say what they want and people are allowed to respond. And people are allowed to be in business with who they want. If I hire a comedian and find out they’re a transphobe, I’m allowed to terminate that relationship. They haven’t been cancelled. Show me a comedian who you say has been cancelled and I’ll show you a comedian who feels entitled to be agreed with.

2023-09-28 22:13:56 +0000 UTCNo such thing as canceled, all the so called comedians who cry that they're canceled do so while they're filming their Netflix special or whatever. Like Frankie Boyle said: "I'm not one of those comedians who's like, 'Ooh, I've been silenced', I hate those people. Anytime I hear someone saying that, I always think, 'How come I can still hear you?'"

2023-09-28 21:50:58 +0000 UTCGreat episode. There was a tiny moment in that episode that had to be re-done so many time because they kept cracking up. So, when The Office is done, I think there's a Christmas Special and then hopefully you'll watch all the bloopers from both series. I didn't get the 'Donkey' thing though :) Totally agree about the censoring of comedy, it's pathetic. We need George Carlin back, he'd have just ploughed right through cancel culture and come out the other end. Great episode, great reaction. Hope you're feeling better. 23k on the horizon on YouTube. Cool.

2023-09-28 21:50:13 +0000 UTCSo cringy and awkward! lol, i like how you said about comedians and comedy nowadays being censored and cancelled...my question is, how has Ricky gervais not been cancelled yet? 🤣 he is untouchable. Anyway, Mandys you rock \m/ keep it up

Danny
2023-09-28 14:51:08 +0000 UTCYeah it's fine for watching Equality Street. It's got a bit of it in the David Brent movie like 10-15 years later or whatever, which is the time period its from. You can always watch it after the series. Its YouTube friendly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmTV62mE1PA there's a short near 5 minute making of it too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGIpvH3daQE
Danny
2023-09-28 14:50:41 +0000 UTCEquality Street is just a separate music video, it doesn't tie into the show in anyway besides Brent mentioning it in the training day episode.
