It's a derogatory term for someone who is physically awkward or incapable, or a genuinely disabled person, and is a contraction and corruption of the word "thalidomide". (The voiceless dental fricative"th" being pronounced like an "f" by Brits of the lowest social classes). "Spod" isn't as bad. It's still somewhat derogatory, but is aimed at intelligent, bookish, studious people. People who have gained a lot of knowledge, especially of science, through focused study. The etymology of the word is unknown, but my own personal theory is that it is a contraction of "Science bod", a term used in the mid 20th century for someone educated in the sciences.

Despite the job title, Jeremy seems to be more like an assistant, a general servant, and not a good one! Edit: I wrote this comment halfway through the episode, forgetting that "handy man" takes on a second meaning by the end. It's been a while since I saw this. 😅
