Mandy Cane Lane

Yeah, I feel like the experience is hindered a bit. But I am watching as I would any other new show. I just know this is going to be full of brilliant moments!

Nick

hey Mandy Canes, im back. All i have to say is i agree, i don't like this intro music at all...not my thing! lol. The US version intro- i like the piano riff, but when that harmonica, or watever comes in, i feel like im a fisherman in ireland or something in a tavern near the seaπŸ˜† ...or boston heh

Industrialist2015ofUk

I mean, of course not. There's no accounting for taste.

Ash Jeffries

I love that we get to rewatch this with you! I like to imagine how much more you'd laugh if you hadn't seen the (other) version first.

Matthew Beckford

It is a very popular song in Britain but it's not for everyone.

Matthew Beckford

When i say two episodes, I don't mean people watched two episodes end-to-end obviously, but it took a couple of weeks for it to fully sink in with everyone that it was a sitcom. In 2001 a very small percentage of viewers would have recognised Ricky from the 11 O'clock Show. I watched it when it was on TV first time as a fairly clued up 14 year old British comedy fan and I didn't recognise him.

James Aston

Not watched this series in a long time so didn't recognise Donna before. Sally Bretton is usually blonde and starred alongside Lee Mack in Not Going Out for a decade or so.

Lee Dellbridge

Really? I mean Ricky was at least semi known and the end credits should have given it away. Maybe people thought it was for 10 minutes of the first episode.

Lee Dellbridge

I assumed that initially till i looked into it. I don't think it was good to use such an obscure vague insult to begin with. They could have just put "Gareth is a cock" since he says that to him

Danny

I thought it was just another way of saying bender.

JokerDanny

Little Easter egg ….Brent mentions that Donna’s parents are called Ron and Elaine which are the names of Stephen Merchants folks. Also his dad pops up in a small cameo later on in the series.

Ant G

Benny is essentially a stupid person/idiot etc. Its not a common phrase. Its from an old TV show called Crossroads, there was a character called Benny who was dumb

Danny

Oh and yes, Stephen Merchant provided the voice of Paul Shepherd, but also appears in several eps as The ogmonster

The Patreon videos still no worky for me, glad you still do the dailmotion links. As for a useless piece of trivia. Mackenzie Crook (actor who plays Gareth) used to live close to a town in the UK called Dartford, a place I myself used to work. We actually both worked for the same company. We both worked for Pizza Hut (not sure if it was the same time as we were born the same year, but I think he worked there earlier) but he was in the restaurant and I worked in the delivery store (two different buildings about a quarter of a mile apart). I remember reading somewhere that he actually based the portrayal of his character on the manager he worked for when he was there. Would like to say I knew the guy, but we had as little to do with the restaurant as possible ha ha

Captain Howdy

I'm sure LOADS of people have said this, but when The Office was first on TV here some people thought it was a real documentary for the first couple of episodes. Ricky and Steve did a really great job of making it look like an actual BBC documentary from that time. And the way the episodes just end kind of awkwardly ties in to that

James Aston

Hi Mandy great reaction, no comparison talk from me just a pic of my new pupper. She is called Willow and she's amazing πŸ€— https://stevie91.imgbb.com/

One minute in but just want to clarify the comment on the theme music. Mandy, how could you?! πŸ˜‚ The end theme is a closer representation of the song but the opening music is an instrumental version. The song is Handbags and Gladrags. It was written by Mike d'Abo in 1967. It was recorded by Christopher Farlowe, Rod Stewart and more recently Stereophonics. It's a really beautiful song and I'd encourage you to listen to the full Stereophonics version and check out the lyrics. I love the intro to The Office but I suppose my love of the song it's based on feeds into that. Definitely not elevator music! πŸ˜‚πŸ™ˆπŸ˜‰ That said, the grim imagery with the somewhat minimal instrumental does represent the original song in a less inspiring light, which is I hope intentional. It's supposed to be slightly bittersweet in its depiction of mundanity rather than just plain dull though πŸ˜‡ The Office as a concept came from late 90s' docu-soaps that had become popular in the UK so your "very 90s'!" observation is spot on, Mandy! πŸ˜πŸ™

"Sex Fetish" now has 10,500,000 results, meaning society is 4,708 times dirtier than it was in 2001.
