Early Access YT Short: "Why No Debunks?"

Hey friends,

I've been maneuvering life's spaceship through an asteroid field lately, and am almost out of it. Apologies for the major slow-down in content.

Currently catching up on Patreon rewards and actually creating some new merch, finally. For real-real.

Meanwhile, here's a #Short!

YouTube reeeeeally wants us to be making them, so I'm experimenting with the format. Still not sure if this is the way to best use it. Let me know if you find this type of thing... watchable?

Thanks as always for your support!

Lol love that your short in under 2 weeks gets over a million views. Love that for the channel but damm.

Tristan

Was pleasantly surprised to see you in shorts!

Joop Joop Games

Glad to see you instead of random crap tiktok reposts.

Anapan

Glad to see you instead of random crap tiktok reposts.

Anapan

I enjoyed the brief content of the short-form. Totally understand the personal life challenges. Hope you are doing well.

Danny Sullivan

this actuially sounds like an interesting topic for the Captain about how social media works and how it is taking power away from the user and protects them from using their own brains...

Florian Obrecht

I like shorts from creators I like. They can be a great medium. Yours was great!

ginger

I don't mind a "short video", but I absolutely *detest* "Shorts" and "Reels" and whatever other marketing speak is used for an uncontrollable video (FFW, REW, etc). Who thought a video that can't be fast forwarded or skipped was a good idea? At least you can change the URL on a YT Short to be controllable. I hate the vertical form factor myself, also, but if it makes you more money I wont begrudge you for doing so.

David Whitney

I often rewind Captain D's videos to rewatch effects, as they're chock full of detail. But YouTube doesn't allow you to rewind 5 seconds or seek ahead on Shorts. It's frustrating to lose control over the video player, so I tend to avoid Shorts.

Brandon Dilbeck

I loved it! I prefer quality over quantity, which I know you deliver, so honestly the format/length doesn't matter for me

Martijn Valk

Frankly, this is the best short on youtube.

Jamie F

Agreed here. Maybe for less produced (I mean: very less produced) shorts, that take you like 2-3h max to do, to satisfy the algorithm and our thirst for content, but don't distract you from content where you're free to do something you enjoy.

Florian Piette

More content, even if the content is short and quick is always better than long dry spells, even if those dry spells result in something AMAZING. This little vignette was awesome, and I'll always be happy to see work from you. There's the twitch naturally of ZOMG PORTRAIT, but such is the world we live in.

Dave Shevett

Works for me. :)

James Dominguez

Love me some merch!

Enzait

One thing we can’t debunk: Captain D’s perfect bouncy hair.

Mindy Sioux

I love YouTube shorts, personally, but very few creators get it "right". I'm happy to say (with a few tweaks) you sir, got it right. Shorts, IMO, are meant to be used for areas where a full video simply isn't necessary, like an explanation, like this. They aren't meant to link to one specific video, they aren't meant to try and entice views for the larger videos, and they aren't meant for compressing videos into cliff notes. Videos like this? Perfect. My only complaint is really that the speed is ever so slightly too fast. A tad slower, and it would be even better! But that's just my opinion. If I find myself on YouTube and want to waste a bit of time I'll sometimes watch only shorts.

Nicholas Koceja

In general, I hate shorts. But this was great; I'll watch yours! (Though I just as soon a video be as long as it needs to be. YouTube seems to think it's what Kids These Days want, though I hope it's not actually what Kids These Days want.)

Jennifer Ortiz

You never need to apologize for living your life. The time and care you put into your content is why we love it so much.

Ian Zamojc

I laughed out loud, certified watchable, however i do listen to audiobooks on 2.5 speed. Still might be the best Ytube short I've seen! Thanks!

Patar

I'm sorry. 😕

iPaq

Oh Captain, my Captain, I thought vertical videos were beneath you? Anyway, like some others here, I personally avoid shorts as much as I can, and if I once in a while watch one, I almost invariably leave the experience feeling cheated by the ultra-turbo-compressed content that almost as often consist of something incomprehensible due to the rushed tempo. (I don't do TikTok, either. Nor the Facebook Stories.) This particular short I feel is top notch CD quality, though way too much content compressed into that tiny amount of time. If I stumble upon them, my Shorts view on Youtube being hidden, I'd feel compelled to watch your future shorts, but I fear the experience would be lacking. But that's me, you do what you feel is best.

Martin Samuelsson

Great!

Austen Walsworth

video is great. if i want vertical content i go to tiktok though.

Ian Hickson

I wholeheartedly disagree. I'll watch the full video for that content. The "best" (read tolerable) shorts are those that provide ancillary support. Footnotes a la Knowing Better, or this.

Jerrad Pierce

YouTube can take their obsession with shorts and shove it. I almost never view them unless I know the creator's content can be paired well with this vertical atrocity... And I say: this is a good short. I'm not sure how it would map to you churning out the dozens of attention-span rotting pieces that YouTube would like, but this one does fit your channel well.

Jerrad Pierce

I really like the abrupt ending with the guitar.

Shaun Hautly

The rampage in the video felt kind of tongue-in-cheek, the underlying reason I got is that he doesn’t do many debunks anymore because he’s already debunked most of the common types of faked videos, and redoing it for new viral clips would be carbon copy explanations from older videos.

David Macdonald

The best shorts are the ones that are excerpts of the longer form content. Easier to produce, and you already have the investment of the production.

Norman

I think our only hope is to flood stupid platforms with not stupid content... subvert the system from within (easy for me to say). Go CD go!

Daniel Kohl

Personally, I actively don't watch sharts and even block them from my feed. They are just annoying and spammy. It's sad that YT is pushing them so hard. If I wanted tiktok, I'd install tiktok

SkaveRat

Way too much production value for a short. I like it. Hopefully all the frustration is not real, stupidity = profit opportunity :)

Myles Rempel

This is good. I think shorts could work for “not this again” type content.

Tom Dickson

Quick, get some paper towels, maybe You can salvage this backdrop (this is expensive stuff, what were You thinking Captain) :D

Aleksander Gawęda

tbh i don't get what these shorts are good for. there is a reason why i love channels which put a lot of effort into their mid to long form content like you do in perfection.

Florian Obrecht

I think this works as a short, I enjoyed it. However, is that really why you stopped doing debunks? I can understand why it would be very frustrating to feel like you're not having an impact but surely having even a small impact is better than none at all? As well as creating resources that people can easily be pointed too and explained in an entertaining format. Personally I liked the debunks because it was interesting to know how these things were done, how to spot the errors, the telltale signs. Kind of like an air crash investigation but for forged media. Obviously the content you make is your decision, and I like your new content too! But I will miss the debunks :(

Sgtpanda

I like it

Peter Zürcher

Yeah, very watchable honestly. I wouldn't even have expected it to be the same quality as your normal videos. A cool idea might be to make shorts like your CD videos. Love ya dude.

Marighost

I'd say this is very watchable. One of the rare times I laugh out loud

Hank Hillford

Def watchable, though I wouldn't complain if you did a sequel to the green screen video because your youtuber impersonations were hysterical 😁
