I would have set up a picnic on the lawn with all of Alex's favourite foods and maybe his wife and kids too. That would be doubly surprising because he wouldn't be expecting a pleasant surprise. Regarding your "unhelpful" escape room friend. Dave is essentially a comedy reruns channel, where shows that aired on something like the BBC are replayed. The joke with Dave is that usually the shows are either very old or certain shows are repeated often. So if you ever hear a comedian talking about a show or something being “shown on Dave” they’re talking about it being rerun many years after it’s aired. Taskmaster is one of the few Dave original shows and they’re often quite good. Also being primarily a comedy they thought the name Dave would be funny.

The channel that originally broadcast Taskmaster is called Dave. It's previous name was UKTVG2 so Dave is the better of the two names, even though it's probably more suitable for a man than a television channel. Dave still exists but new episodes of Taskmaster are on Channel 4 now.

I don't like the design of the "surprise Alex" task, because having Alex walk out of the shed into a situation in which he knows they're going to try and surprise him ensures that Alex is going to *expect* exactly that, so it's almost impossible for him to experience *genuine* surprise. I feel like the task would have worked better with less limitations on time and physical location eg if it had been something like "surprise Alex some time between now and the studio recording" which would have given them months to surprise him in any location in any way they liked (they would have had to have filmed it though obviously). That could have made for more creative ideas and actual, *genuine* surprise from Alex.
