This is almost a shot-for-shot remake of a 1957 darma film called 'Zero Hour!'; Jim Abrahams and the Zucker brothers bought the movie rights specifically so they could make this movie. Much of the dialogue is lifted straight from Zero Hour!, completely unchanged. They cast Karim Abdul Jabbar as a direct nod to the 57 film, which had Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch.
