Didn't Cavendish screw it all up? He was the surveyor and the tunnel was too short. When climbing out of the tunnel he fell over making the noise that disturbed the Nazi guards. Then he made the most lame escape attempt hitchhiking on a van taking him straight to the Nazis. The film shouldn't be called "The Great Escape" it should be called "Cavendish Screws It Up!".

2023-04-18 15:13:24 +0000 UTCDan to answer your question about why they weren't immediately killed, after the First World War, because of all the atrocities committed, the Geneva Convention was drawn up which was basically a set of rules about how prisoners of war should be treated, Officers did no manual labour, if a soldier surrendered he couldn't be shot and had to be taken into custody, etc. All countries involved in WWI signed it. So in WWII those rules were supposed to be obeyed by both sides, obviously in the heat of battle things get forgotten but the Gestapo were notorious for ignoring them. The Officers that escaped were all in civilian clothes so the Gestapo used that as an excuse to execute them as spies. Bastards. My Great-Uncles were all in the Belgian resistance and the were put into concentration camps and all but one worked to death by the Nazis. There's also an amazing true story film called "The Colditz Story" which is fantastic. I think you'd love it. Also "The Wooden Horse" is another fantastic true story film. The soldier who actually did the digging and escaped, Peter Butterworth, went on to become an actor, auditioned to play himself in the film but didn't get the part because they said he didn't look heroic enough!!!!π€¦π»ββοΈπ The ingenuity of soldiers in WWII to escape never ceases to astonish me. They were incredible.

It's a true story about WWII in London but seen through the eyes of a 10 year old boy, Billy Rowan. It won loads of awards when it was released. It's absolutely brilliant. Very funny and moving
