It would still be worth you watching the first series for yourselves as it's interesting to see how the characters developed, for instance in the first series, Baldrick is actually the brains. Some great performances and I think it is highly undervalued. Also there is a good documentary called "Blackadder, The Whole Rotten Saga" which is interesting as it's got all the actors and writers talking about how the series developed and how they created their roles. Well worth a watch.
