We had one in our village it was 240ft built in 1897 and was used as a chimney for an incinerator for general rubbish. It was demolished in exactly the same way as Fred did this one in 1978. 2 people died one building it another when demolishing it. I remember every time i looked at it realising it was getting lower and as a kid I was a bit sad when I could no longer see it. Apparently they were tall so that all the fumes did not linger near people and in the north especially with all our hills that meant sometimes they had to be really tall so people living on a nearby hillside didn't get fumes in their homes. I'm guessing if there is plenty of space around and generally flatter landscape you didn't need them so tall.

He became quite a celebrity after the programmes were made about his work as a steeplejack, he did some programmes where he travelled around the UK in his traction engine and visited all sorts of museums and attractions, very interesting. He was a real character, gone too soon sadly 😕
