This is my favorite Opeth song! 😎🤘 It is in first person about murderer who kills his victims by drowning them. He knows he is evil and longs for Deliverance, but he does not find it. The last lyric in the song is "Deliverance, thrown back at me. Deliverance, laughing at me." The growling voice is the murderous side of him, and the clean voice is the side of him who wants to be a good person but can't. Rhythmically this song has large sections in 7/8 time, including the early quiet part, the riff right before the middle solo, and the middle solo itself. This gives it that uneven "off-kilter" feeling. (The outro, though it sounds rhythmically interesting, is in straight 4/4 time.) I'm a music theory and time signature nerd so I notice these things.

2023-05-13 04:38:27 +0000 UTCWell Epica and Opeth are my two favourite metal bands, but I have reserved a third spot for Igorrr if they make any more albums like Spirituality and Distortion. So I won't say anything beats Epica - but Opeth equal them in my opinion. I wasn't into growls until Opeth, I wasn't sure at first but the music was amazing. Then I heard them more as an instrument and it really grew on me in no time.
