You can use the patch to upgrade any version beginning with 0.5.11a1 to version 0.5.12b1 , just make sure to get the right flavour (hi-res/compressed).
To use the patch, place the .exe file into the game’s root folder and launch it.

If you mean the patch, you should check if your version is 4Gb+. If it is, it's a hi-res one. If it's closer to 2gb, then it's a compressed one. And you should get the EA version, it has more content.
