No Charge This Month

Hey all,

I just wanted to announce that I've paused Patreon for the September 1st billing cycle, so you shouldn't be charged.  I have like four pages written on Chris Crawford’s Dragon Speech that I was really hoping to whip into a shape I was happy with, but it’s just not there yet.  And I figured I’d rather take this script, continue to workshop it, and release something I could be proud of later than try to slam something out the door before it’s ready just to meet an arbitrary deadline.

I’ve also just been sort of burnt out because of… well, the state of the world.  So my plan right now is to skip the current release, enjoy the upcoming long weekend here in the States, and then begin work in earnest on Halloween stuff having recharged my batteries.  I’ve got at least a spooky Blips episode and something a little bigger planned, and I’m really excited to begin that stuff (especially since pretty much all the rest of Halloween has been cancelled). So that’ll be fun!

Anyways, apologies for the impromptu gap in content, but sometimes writer’s block and the world at large just conspire to make you less productive than you want to be. More good stuff is coming, I promise. As always, thank you for the support, and I’ll catch you soon.

- Chris

I don't think it's necessary to pause for a month unless you had specifically promised everyone a video on a monthly schedule. Or maybe if you're straight up going on vacation (depending on how long it is - like a month or more). I think it's good to stick to some kind of unofficial schedule regardless but it's fine to miss a month or two here or there. I'm sure people will let you know if they feel like you're "slacking", but you've got a pretty long, consistent track record. It would take a lot to lose that trust.

Please be kind to yourself! I appreciate your channel's quality over quantity of videos. Taking breaks is part of the process, and I always assumed my tiny contributions would fund your breaks along with everything else.

I just want to add my voice to this consensus, because I think it's important. You do great work, and I'd hate to see it diminish in quality because you feel pressured to produce on a Patreon induced timeline. If you ever need to take a break (and the self-imposed hell of writers block certainly doesn't count as a break!) you should do so! I, for one, will still be here chipping in as much as you permit every month. Take care of yourself!

But you put out a video in August! Ohwell. You deserve a break, the world has been exhausting lately. Heck, we just had eleven days in a tent in an evacuation camp so... Stay safe out there!

As others have said, I'm supporting you overall as a writer, not specifically for individual pieces you produce, and I'm happy to do that even in a month where you're taking time to recharge.

Take your time, make it amazing, and go ahead and charge this month. I'm here to support the creator not arbitrary content quotas.

Your channel has always been something special for the quality of your content, not the quantity. I have yet to find another channel on youtube that goes this deep into the meaning and philosophy of gameplay mechanics. So I don't have a problem to continue supporting, even if you don't adhere to a strict monthly release schedule. Thanks for doing such a great job, and take care of yourself.

I won’t speak for others but I don’t care about not getting a video this month, next month, or any month. I like the work you do and the work you’ve done and the least I can do is try to help give you the support and freedom to continue to do that work, or not, whatever. You’re worth more than any of your videos. We’re in a collective hell right now and I’m honestly concerned if something _isn’t_ struggling. Rest up, take your time, and be kind to yourself. <3

I just watched the Dragon Speech in full for the first time after re-watching your Violence in Games videos and seeing it mentioned. Would love to hear your thoughts more in depth on that speech and Crawford in general. It's a trip to watch that speech now.

The world is a fucking nightmare and its definitely reasonable to be having issues because of it. I'm with everyone else who's commented, I expect content to come out when it comes out, not necessarily monthly, if I were worried about directly paying for content I'd only support people who are on the by creation model.

+1 on everything Josh just said. I find it really concerning how many messages of "Patron-induced pressure to produce" I receive, given that my specific love for Patreon was exactly the hope to eliminate that.

Henrik Heimbuerger

For the record, I'm happy to keep paying monthly even when a creator is not producing content for that month. I support creators because I want to facilitate their creative work by lowering the threshold for financial barriers they face, not because I feel like I'm paying for the next video or song or whatever. Not sure how many others feel this way, but I might be worth taking a poll.
