A Brief History And Look At 0451

Finally! This took a lot of footage capture (there's bits from Thief, Thief 2, Dishonored, Knife of Dunwall, Dishonored 2, System Shock, System Shock 2, Ultima Underworld, Firewatch, Neon Struct, Gone Home, Deus Ex, and more in here!) and went through a number of rewrites.  But it's here!

And since this doesn't manage to delve quite as deeply into the individual games as I would have liked (and since the overall conclusions I can draw from looking at the lineage of 0451 games is a little iffy) it's also the start of a series I'll be running this summer looking at various games in the Looking Glass tradition!  This won't be all I'm up to this summer - I hope to tackle a few smaller indie games as well - but it's going to be sort of this summer's big project, I think.  And first up is Deus Ex, which should be up soon!

Also, reminder that you can get your Discord seekret Patron channel access if you want by editing your pledge and claiming the reward!  Let me know if you have any problems with that!

The plan is to make Dishonored 2 one of the games covered this summer, and I think we'll definitely get into that since they spent a *lot* of time making Dishonored 2's non-lethal/low chaos play a lot more engaging, and what that means both thematically from a design/player experience perspective. It's a valid point that playing with no powers is the way a lot of people prefer Dishonored - it's closer to its Thief forebears, and became so important a playstyle that Dishonored 2 even lets you forego powers all together! So yeah, I think this summer we'll get to have a good discussion that revisits a lot of these ideas!

This is a good point - in the rush to get this out I overlooked that, I've done it before and it just slipped my mind. I'll make sure to do so going forward! (And yes, it's Prey 2017 and Thief 1998)

Great video, and even though the connection between "0451 games" is sketchy, it's a good starting point to talk about these immersive sims and compare them. I can't help but complain about a nitpick of mine though: I get upset whenever people brush off the Dishonored games' no-powers / nonlethal approach as "boring". It's immensely subjective, and that should be acknowledged. Especially since here you seem to imply as if giving us the choice of playing in a boring way is a design intent(?). Different strokes, all I'm saying. (Also, it's entirely possible to hate the guts of the overseers and the outsider at the same time:)

I'm going to assume Prey is the new Prey, but where multiple titles exist with the same name would you kindly add the year of release?
