Not sure it you remember, but Janos Slynt was the commander of the city watch of Kings landing, when Ned was the Hand. He was bribed by Littlefinger and the Lannisters to join their side when they betrayed him. Since Tyrion suspected correctly afterwards that he was either loyal to Cercei or Littlefinger he replaced him with Bronn and sent him to the Wall. By executing Janos Slynt Jon got a little bit of revenge without him knowing about it
