MercySoldier CloseUp Preview02 - 1$

I gotta think of a better naming convention for these titles ...

I'm ready to render this shot now. Render time is ~5min per frame with 355 frames, so this is gonna take at least 30h. Add to that whatever the background will take.

This won't be finished in around 30 hours from now though. Keep in mind I'll have to interrupt the render if it gets in the way of whatever I'm working on in the meantime. Working while rendering also increases the render times, so there's that too.

Basically I'm saying, don't expect an update in 30h!

Since there's so many short motions, techniques you'd use in traditional animation, don't really work all that well here, I think. I start off by making one loop, which is just one or two thrusts long and then polish it real good. I make sure that every part moves, that there are no jarring motions and no clipping. Then I take this loop, duplicate it and string it together. As I go, I tweak the speed of each loop so the speed ramps up or down over the course of the animation. By the end of this I have a clip that's several hundred frames long and is as monotonous as can be. On top of this clip, which you can consider as something like background noise, I just add more and more layers of animation on top, which do a fairly good job of hiding the fact that it's all just based on a loop, that's only half a second long. If you look at the base loop or the layered animations alone, they don't look like much, but in combination they hide each other's shortcomings really well.

curious about your animation technique, block first then polish?

Totally worth the wait. I am so hyped! Thanks for your work!
