Doctor Lake was a psychiatrist practicing in New York City’s Upper East Side. His patients were celebrities and the captains of industry, drawn to Lake’s natural charisma as well as his impressive track record. Unfortunately for them, Lake was a minor grade telepath with mesmerizing powers – he often mind-scanned his patients for blackmail material or hypnotized them into performing various sexual acts with himself or others. This might have gone on for years, but Doctor Lake took Peter Reynolds as a patient.
Reynolds was a high-class international jewel thief now possessed by a malevolent gemstone known as the Ruby of Ruin, which he had stolen from its hiding place in Russia. The Ruby was home to an incubus, a demon-like creature of pure lust, who delighted in seducing humans and then dominating them through their sexual urges. Reynolds had been a good host, but Lake not only had powers, but he also had a psychopathic personality already bent towards domination. The Ruby abandoned Reynolds, who committed suicide soon afterwards, for Lake.
Unlike Reynolds, the gem formed a partnership with Doctor Lake, seeing in him a kindred spirit. The Ruby boosted Lake’s powers to the point that he could dominate others at a distance almost instantly instead of merely suggesting over a period. With his new powers, Lake became the supervillain The Ringmaster, determined to bring the underworld under his control.
