My friends, I managed to paint the first two components of the vignette. After giving everything an opaque layer of black primer, I airbrushed the mortar shell as the first important detail.
After some searching I learned that high-explosive shells were painted in Olive Green or Field Grey, so I went with green. A few photos show some labels and markings on these shells, but I didn't find anything appropriate in my spares... but at the same time, I wanted to add some small visual delicacy to it! So I used one leftover decal from a 1/48 Sherman and another decal from the VW Beetle staff car. Not very cash money, I know, but I'm happy with the look! :)
The shell received a pin wash, some chipping, subtle rust effects, and a bit of polishing with graphite. I'll integrate it with the base using earth tones later.
The brick wall was airbrushed with a mixture of Hull Red and Flat Yellow from Tamiya. The mortar lines were added with lightweight acrylic putty from Bergswerk using a flat silicone brush, and once this has dried, I added random acrylic washes from Vallejo paints. Deck Tan and Light Mud for a more faded, dusty look, AK Burnt Umber and Black Brown for shadows and stains, and Orange Brown over a few select bricks for added vibrancy. Note that I sculpted (and emphasized with paints) a cracked portion in the wall. When a brick wall develops a crack, it usually creates a gap between bricks that goes in an irregular pattern.
Up next is the concrete, and then rubble! Probably! :)
