My friends, the hairspray chipping and basic coloring was a tedious task! Applying two layers of chipped paint on a VW Beetle is not the same as doing the same on a heavy cold war tank, that's for sure!
I started with the grey primer, this was mixed from German Grey and Deck Tan. Two coats of Heavy Chipping Fluid, then spraying the random patterns according to reference images, and hours of chipping. A layer of flat varnish from VMS and it was ready for the next layer.
The faded green paint - I poured a good amount of Deck Tan into a plastic cup and kept adding drops of Deep Green and Yellow Green until the tone matched the color references. The same process was repeated - lots of chipping fluid, and lots of scrubbing!
It's impossible to deduce what is the correct tone of the faded green because it varies in every corner of the tank. It gets affected by grime, sun fading, rust bleeding into the paint, etc etc.
Tomorrow my street won't have electricity for half a day, so if I want to finish the video in time, I have some more painting in front of me tonight!
I have to add some sprayed scrapyard markings, and post-shade the model. Some of that variation in the green will be achieved in this step, and hopefully the airbrushed pinwash will give this chipped mess some definition! Wish me luck!
