Moar groundwork

My friends, yesterday and earlier today I focused all my effort on painting the remaining terrain. It went smoothly at first, but then it didn't so much... I kept using the same techniques and paints like I did on the tank and the trench, but something wasn't working... and I realized it after good 7 hours of painting!

The ground seemed very dull and completely desaturated. Honestly, I had no idea how to fix it, so I left it "sit" overnight and today gave some of the spots a very controlled round of aibrushing with Tamiya Buff paint. That pretty much solved the problem! But... one thing still remains.

Although I feel like the ground captures a blown-up battlefield pretty well, it's still lacking some color. I still have some tarps to paint, and some random trench items that I can place (very strategically) across the battlefield. And you know what? Although I didn't want to at first, I think I'll pour some water into the crater and the trench tonight, so it'll be rock solid tomorrow!

Maybe this is one of the dioramas where putting historical pictures on the sides would liven it up!

Hmmm. I see what you're saying about the ground being dull. I do think water will help. It always seems to make a scene more interesting at least. And others have good suggestions. The darker to lighter color of the ground near the water would add even more interest. More texture. And I agree that the soldiers would help “brighten” things. The more I look at it, I really think if the sides of the dio weren't black, that would actually liven everything else up. If it was a warmer, mid, brown maybe? That might make some of the other colors on the actual dio stand out. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Just a thought.

There are often changes to colour and texture to soil as it gets deeper. Perhaps their is merit in introducing a colour graduation (to red maybe) in the trench? Agree that the bottom of the trench will be wet so a wet muddy look would be a good idea. If it is summer you may have some grass regrowing around the base of the cross and the top of the trenches (there are some good references out there). Otherwise maybe bring in a flag? Good luck mate.
