Ma frens, I finished the upper hull chipping and started with the green camouflage patches. I'm purposely going for this bright, happy, vivid look because if French camouflages were so colorful, why don't make the most out of it? 😁
I found that using an old airbrush needle or something similar is a great help when you're creating these fine chips, especially around sharp edges. You pretty much scrape the paint off and then give the area a quick pass with a paintbrush which will expand the chipping. The needle is also ideal for long, horizontal scratches.
The green camouflage was mixed from NATO Green, Sky and Flat Yellow. The upper border was masked with Mr. Hyde Putty while the bottom "soft" transition is where brown is gonna be, also masked for that sharp transition. But first I need to spray the green on the turret!
One thing worth noting is the layered chipping and "finding" the steel chips in the base coat. This can be really hard, especially if the camouflage layer is softer and easier to chip. In my opinion, it would be way easier to achieve the effect with a sponge and paintbrushes! I think it's a good lesson for the future. After all, not every tool or technique is ideal for all situations.
I'll probably fix this unbalance by covering some of the steel chips with the base color, so the model won't look like it was beaten up and then sprayed with camouflage colors.
But I can already tell it will be super fun to treat this camouflage with oil paints!
