2022/07/06 - Gladiatrix

A new work has just begun. The theme I'm working on is Gladiatrix. When I work on themes based on historical materials, I try to find as many as references and sculpted them accordingly. This work is an attractive subject, and it's a subject that's been recreated a lot by other creators and artists. So I am still thinking a lot about how to start this work.
I uploaded some of the references I found. As you know, I'm usually worried because wonderful miniatures are already on the market. My strategy is, "If I can't make it better than miniature already exist it, let's make it unique or different." I'm still not good enough for people who are really good at sculpting. So I think this process is very important to create a work that can satisfy each other.
So put some dummies on poses. I created a standoff between Murmillo and Hoplomachus. Both walking poses are storytelling capable, but they don't look dynamic, and I don't think they'll be heroic or epic when they're done.
So secondly, I made Hoplomachus in a defensive position. It looks more dynamic than the pose in previous picture. I think I can make a pretty good composition if I combine this pose with the walking Murmillo in the previous picture.
The last one is the pin-up pose. Originally, I wanted to make a Murmillo version, but it was changed to Hoplomachus' equipment because the large scutum covered the her body a lot.
Now, I'm working on Hoplomachus, who took the second defensive position. I don't know how other poses will proceed or not, but please let me know if you have any other ideas or different poses you like.
Basically, the costumes of the work are not that difficult, so it doesn't take a long time. So, I'd like to show more variations to express more things with this theme.

I'd remove the figure of the legionnaire as inspiration. Gladiators were entertainers (think modern professional wrestling, but with real blood), while the soldiers were equipped and trained for simple slaughter. There were a few times of fake soldiers "re-enacting" battles in the arena, but even there the focus was on spectacle rather than accuracy.

2022-07-06 20:53:51 +0000 UTCOne thing you almost never see with gladiators is pairs. Either two of them fighting back to back or with poses that are covering each-other. Having two of them fighting back-to-back would make a great diorama with a bunch of wolves or the like.
