Reminder of IOS Billing Changes π
Added 2024-10-31 18:13:46 +0000 UTCHey all,
As always, I like transparency around here-- especially when it comes to billing stuff. A few months ago, I did a post here all about the apparent Apple app store changes to Patreon. For the full article, check out that original post. It has the breakdown on fees as well as links to the articles that support this information.
But today I got a reminder so I wanted to pass that along to all of you.
So if you use IOS at all, save some money and check out these quick bullet comments or read my original post in detail. I don't want people getting charged extra fees for absolutely no benefit to themselves or the creator. That just hurts all of us.
Short Version:
If you have an iPhone or use Apple at all, Apple is requiring all Patreon app subscriptions to pass through their app store now instead of just through the Patreon app. This means Apple takes a cut when you subscribe to new creators and IOS users would have to pay more for subscriptions than other users.
To avoid this, just don't subscribe to anyone through the IOS Patreon app and you're fine. Use a web-based source (Honestly, the manipulative side of me thinks you could just open the page in Safari and subscribe there to avoid the charge but I'm not 100% sure) to subscribe to your favorite creators and then you can view the content using the app for free.
This will not affect current subscribers. It will only affect new purchases or if you currently subscribe and drop-- it would hit you when you resubscribe.
Even if you use IOS, if you just keep an active subscription currently, the extra charges will never affect you. It's only new subs that subscribe to a creator through the IOS app. If you don't even use the app, none of this will affect you at all so you can ignore it.
You can still use the app to view content, comment, like, etc and not be charged. The charge only hits if you subscribe to a creator through the app. All other app uses will not change. I also believe that if you use a MAC as your primary computer, you can view all Patreon content using the app without the fee. But if you open the content using the app and then purchase something or subscribe to someone in that app, you'll be paying the extra fee to Apple. So if you have a MAC, just subscribe to creators through Safari, Chrome, or whatever then view the stuff on the app.
Save your money and bypass this. There's absolutely no benefit to you, Patreon, or the creator that you're supporting.
If you have questions, hit me up in the comments or send me a private message. I'm very serious about supporting my IOS app users on this and will try and clarify or link you sources for information. If something isn't clear about any of this, just ask

Bloody Apple! T'is why I dropped them as a company Waaay back when I had an Apple LC computer! lol! They are so money hungry and I don't think offer anything more than a 'brand'.
