Apple IOS and Patreon Pricing (Please Read if you use IOS)

Hey all,

So today I got an email notification from Patreon regarding upcoming Apple IOS pricing changes.

Starting in November, Apple is requiring Patreon to charge an additional fee if you use the IOS App store to subscribe to a Patreon Creator. As reported, neither Patreon or the Creator will receive more money, the extra money is all going to Apple. To put this another way: if you use the IOS Patreon app and subscribe to a Creator using that app, it will charge you extra.

It's actually quite a freakin' bit, too.

Example:

     Fan pays $10 IOS will charge $14.50 Apple keeps the $4.50 Creator gets $10

Times are tough so let's take a look on how to completely avoid these bullshit fees and still support all your favorite Creators out there.

FAQS, Notes, and How to Avoid This Charge

In short: this fee will only be applied if you complete a financial transaction using the IOS App. Browsing or using the app to view content won't change or charge you.

Fees Do not apply to existing Supporters:  If you already support a creator and you're just using autobill, you will not pay the extra fee. However, if you cancel your support to a creator and then restart that support using the IOS App, it will charge the fee. Stay subscribed to avoid it or if you drop your subscription, make sure you use the Patreon website or Android-based App for the transaction of resubscribing.

Fees do not apply to Patreon website Users: If you use a desktop computer or laptop, you should be fine and be able to completely avoid these fees. Just don't use the actual Apple App to subscribe to anyone and you're fine. Hell, you should even be able to go to Patreon.com on Safari and subscribe through the website there. Just don't subscribe using the app.

Looking at content in IOS App shouldn't change: If you subscribe through the Patreon website but have the Patreon App on your phone, you should be able to avoid the fee. The fee only applies to transactions conducted through the IOS App. If you sub elsewhere but use the IOS app to browse content, you're fine. It doesn't cost to use the app-- fee is only applied at the time of subscribing.

Fees do not Apply to the Android App at all: If you're using an android based phone or literally any other phone, you will not be charged extra. It's only the Patreon app downloaded from the IOS App store and it only applies if you buy something through that App.
