Behind the Scenes: Why a Porn Game!?
Added 2020-09-05 20:50:35 +0000 UTCSo one of the most popular questions I got early on (and still by many of the newer followers) is why isn't there more sex in this porn game?
So first things first on this one... It's not technically a porn game...
While Straight?! very much falls within the adult genre, the game isn't specifically designed as a porn game. While most people make these types of games to overtly make porn, express kinks, or make money; from the beginning, Straight!? was designed with two completely different things in mind.
1. A Raw Discussion about Sexuality
To adequately tell a coming of age story, you have to be able to touch on sexual identity and this discussion lies at the heart of Straight!?. About a year ago, Blayke said it the most succinctly when he said "in real life, people are naked" and I think this captures the intentions behind the sexual content of the game. How do you adequately tell a story about sexual identity if the camera keeps cutting away during any sexual intimacy scenes? I wanted to be able to show those parts of the story because many aspects of sexuality are the foundations for anxieties that stand as obstacles to our own progression and the progression of the characters. Without actually seeing these in the game, I don't think you can fully empathize with the characters.
Similarly, some people never struggled with these aspects. In this vein, Straight?! becomes an anxiety simulator and hopefully those who have never struggled with things like this can gain some perspective into those who do. Zack's character embodies an interesting scenario that holds true for a lot of people: what happens when you're surrounded by a supportive and understanding group but you're the one holding yourself back? What's that journey realistically look like? And how do you accomplish that? Sometimes just having support isn't enough!
I'll also say that I'm, personally, a fan of male nudity in media--but for surprising reasons that probably aren't what you think. I've noticed during most mainstream TV shows, that if the taboos of male nudity are shown, the show typically doesn't shy away from other taboo issues either. This, to me, means that any type of creative writing is on the table for the story. As a creator, I'm not a fan of censorship because it's an obstacle to the story. When it pertains to sexual content, I think the inclusion of adult content is beneficial to being able to relate to and empathize with these characters. For example, during the early parts of the game, nudity is hidden. I think this frustrates the reader--but that hopefully allows you to understand and experience Zack's frustration as well.
2. Target Audience
While Straight!? is very much written for any 18+ reader, it originally did have a specific audience in mind when I conceptualized the idea for this game. I've personally struggled with sexuality for a long time and I really haven't made it a secret that many of Zack's inhibitions are based in-part on my own. In this regard, while the game is fictional, it is cathartic in a sense and this partially explains why the writing is so personal and takes so long at times for me to do. It also explains many of my comments related to the game "being for me" and never really intended for an audience. It's also the primary motivation for completing the game-- because it's a personal journey that I have to see through.
Much like Zack, I'm in the psych field and I believe that sexuality and identity development lie at the heart of self acceptance and one's pursuit for meaning in life. However, many people struggle in silence in this regard. After watching adult forums on other games for awhile, I noticed that many of the things that people play these games for are based on things they hide from the rest of the world. From a therapy perspective, this means that many people suffer in silence on things that the counseling field or supportive people are unable to help with because we simply don't know they exist. Therefore, the idea was to create a game where the main character suffered in silence as a way to validate the struggles of the target audience.
To take an additional step, the idea further suggested that it could be possible to actually reach people on a personal level who struggled with these types of conceptualizations using the actual gaming format. My question was: is it possible to use the adult genre as a tool to help others who struggle with sexuality issues? This is why Zack spends so much time in the game arguing with himself. As he begins to work things out, this allows for a template for the reader on potential ways to overcome these obstacles the way that he does. Is this the only way? Nope. But it's a start.
So in short... that's why the content is the way it is in the game :)

2020-09-28 06:26:50 +0000 UTCI have supported this project from the start then it was 1 month installments for the next saga in their lives and i waited for that next installement this is now taking 3 months per installment I dont know you put selfies out which are out of context to the story. sorry but I dont think I am getting much more for my $70 a year than a free person gets by waiting 2 more weeks than me . I wanted to explain why I have lowered my contribution because i repect you work but cannot continue to pay for what others get free after 2 more weeks.

2020-09-12 05:31:43 +0000 UTCI'm glad you appreciate that. I think it's unusual to do this type of attraction and still have the smutty content but I strongly feel it's needed to accomplish what I really wanted to with this game. We'll see more of this later as I'm sure people will have other strong reactions as things play out over the last few updates

2020-09-10 23:48:33 +0000 UTCI do really like the story progresses as Brandon started to explore his own sexuality and how comfort and unbothered he is with Zack. Even though I’m always making a wall between game and reality. They r not always the same but this story give me a insight of how people attract people and no matter what his/hers/theirs and anything in between of their gender differences romantically. But it’s 2020, who care if it’s a porn game or nah, as long as the story is good, graphics are always gon be the eye candies for us. As for porn they can find it on Twitter anyway it wasn’t in anyway rare or extraordinary. The CHEMISTRY, the ROMANTIC CONNECTIONS is what I’m here for, period.

2020-09-07 16:12:52 +0000 UTCI'd probably describe it as an existential coming of age romance about self acceptance and sexuality

2020-09-07 11:20:20 +0000 UTCThanks Tom, this thread is turning interesting because people are starting to chime in with many of the private messages that I've been getting for years: and that's how the game has impacted them. It's done precisely what I wanted it to and I'm glad it hit you the way that it did. You're definitely not alone man :)

2020-09-06 17:09:37 +0000 UTCThanks a lot. it was something i was worried about when I started. I figured people were mostly just looking for games to jerk off too but that wasn't my idea here. Sure, it's erotic but in a completely different way and I really continue to appreciate that I've gone against the status quo on this

2020-09-06 17:04:50 +0000 UTCYep, i agree with you. I'll also note that I've strayed away from using specific labels much in this game in regard to bisexual, pansexual, demisexual, etc. Much like Zack's ethnicity, I wanted to depict a situation where it was ok to not label yourself and allow it to speak to people they way they choose. The discussion also allows for some serious talks about how others immediately condone people simililar to what you said. It's been fun to watch people with their foot in their mouth when they screamed about Braden being secretly gay--because that's a judgement and it was incorrect. Some people find power in labels while others are terrified of putting themselves into a box. While this goes against the current movement right now, I'm ok with that because if someone has "pride" in who they are, they can use the same pride to not fit themselves into a box. There's a fluidity to the sexuality in this story and I like that a lot. But I think, for it to truly work and get it's point across, we have to be able to see these characters as humans with flaws and faults so that we can empathize with them. It's easy to condemn the thoughts or perspectives of others when you don't really know them or you're not attached to them. The idea here was to make you truly care about these guys before the difficult stuff hit.

2020-09-06 17:03:47 +0000 UTCHoney, it seems like you missed the entire point of Aaryn's post. It's a behind the scenes look at his thought process, not a request for how to improve his game so you can, to borrow from your name, pull your pud. I've been playing porn games for a long time and Straight?! is one of two games I've played to have a realistic story and actual world building (the other is the Chronicles of Coceter, RIP you beautiful game). There are plenty of games out there that are pure porn that you can indulge in. This one is perfect exactly the way it is.

2020-09-06 13:03:45 +0000 UTCI absolutely love the work that you have done and as a 30 year old that came out at 24 and still getting to the point where Zack is at now I've found this really comforting to realise I'm not alone with this. This has also helped me to understand myself more as well as it made me think about my situation! Carry on with the amazing work you are doing and if you need to chat then drop a message ☺️

2020-09-06 07:13:17 +0000 UTCI understand its not a pure porn game but you say you don't want to push the camera away when there's a sexual part going on but you do EXACTLY that. When a charactor goes off for a suggested sexual encounter as written in YOUR story ie the don't go for a coffee or a swim or drive the go to jerk off you hide it. People get naked in real life show a bit more of braden and others naked in private as would reflect real life. Even zack never jerks off anymore for an 18-19 year old that's just unrealistic

2020-09-06 00:15:30 +0000 UTCAs a 50 year old bisexual male who has known what I am since about age 10 but never had the strength to tell the world until almost a year ago, I really appreciate this breakdown. I think bisexuals have it easier than a lot of people in the LGBTQ+ community but that ease is a trap. Very often we hide as straight and never get to explore who we are, or if we do we only explore the sexual side through hookups. I think western society has come along way towards accepting people who identify as LGBTQ+ but I think bisexuals still get a lot of pressure both from heterosexuals and homosexuals. Many don't believe it is a thing and they think it is just a gateway to homosexuality. I can sort of understand why they might think that. Monosexuals have a hard time grasping how someone could be sexually attracted to more than 1 gender. I have a hard time understanding how someone can only be attracted to 1. Thanks for the breakdown. It is an amazing story. Maybe it will be a streaming miniseries someday.

2020-09-05 23:38:23 +0000 UTCYeah. I tried really hard to shiw a realistic and believeable depiction of anxiety. A lot of people who've never experienced this, find it easy to say "don't worry about it" or something similar. But in reality, it's not that easy. I wanted to avoid cliches here so I tried to walk a line of realistic anxiety versus just basic overthinking. There's a simultaneous attempt to educate people on some of the sexual struggles of their peers while confronting a lot of society's labels that continue to alienate just as many people as they include

2020-09-05 21:46:24 +0000 UTCI find it particularly interesting that I haven't struggled much with my identity at all yet still identify with almost every other attribute of Zack's mentality, from rejection of stereotypical "gay" appearance to being stuck in my head constantly overthinking things 😊 (I will confess, though, that I did prefer Zack's original hairstyle).
