Usually when they say "the thing" during that time period they mean "an assembly" or "gathering". I assume Harald was assembling all his land owners and people to a meeting. Also, good pickup on the ni chan. English subs usually translate it to the characters name instead of "brother" or "sister". It is quite annoying, for me at least xD Good thing they didn't show the beating. It was horrible already..
