I understand I didn't do the best job of describing Lea's Slumber and the Sleeping Fort. I plan to go back and fix that, but here's a little something for you guys for now. It shows how I imagine the surrounding topography and why the villagers believe they're safe.
Origins of the Lea's Slumber
Once upon a time, long, long ago, an arcane distortion disrupted the gravitational field that held two disks together collided. The smaller of the two fragmented and one of the chunks found its way to what is now the Iron Disk. It broke up in the plain's atmosphere, and the biggest chunk landed in the Gator Tooth Mountains. The collision left a variety of minerals in the crater and redirected several local rivers and streams. With flowing, water came life.
Beast attacks and warring giants plagued the Verdant Plains for centuries. The human kingdoms were busy warring with one another and the fae, leaving the peasants to suffer. After they got sick of the neglect, families gathered and set out looking for a safe place to settle. When they found Craggle Pass, the settlers weren't sure of what to expect. It appeared too dry and arid for a settlement. However, they were tired and nursing their wounds after a Verdant Lion attack. The caravan's scout decided to explore while the healers did their magic.
None of them expected to find a lush green crater full of rivers and wildlife. Time had turned the crater's walls into cliffs, and the rivers had added to the already rich soil. The wild berries, mushroom and fruit trees had brought deer, rabbits and wild pigs to the crater. The settlers couldn't ask for anything better. They built their home Gator Village.
Gator Village flourished. Their farms, orchards, and livestock produced enough to supply the local lords and their military outposts. Gator Village flourished. They expanded but didn't let their wealth go to their heads. Instead, they lived simple lives, living off the land and furnishing themselves and their families with skill stones.
Then as the war intensified and local lords found themselves stripped of their homes. They turned to Gator Village for refuge. Together the people pooled their resources to fortify Craggle Pass, building a keep and military defences. They stayed out of war and survived, providing refuge for all who needed it. So, when the Champion of Equilibrium finished her task and brought balance to the disk, she picked Gator Village as her home. She and her party found homes. They grew old and died. The locals named the village after her: Lea's Slumber.
With time civilization moved across the Verdant Plains away from the Gator Tooth Mountains, and the lords followed. The keep and encampment emptied and before long fell into disrepair. History books named it the Sleeping Fort. The locals persisted, though. After all, they were no longer just survivors, but they had a Champion and her party's blood running through them too.
