This really caters to the theatre people out there. You know musical singers and actors. Cuz everyone who is a theatrical actor/actress WANTS to play one of these characters in the stage play. And EVERYONE I know LOVES the musical meant for stage and when this came out they were obsessing over it. So maybe it's just theatre people like me!?

Phantom of the Opera is a masterpiece and should be seen.

The thing about Sondheim musicals is that they are like marmite. Everyone considers Sondheim as one of the greatest musical writers and composers however due to his different style it can be hard to get through. The movie has so many stars in as they would consider it almost an honour to be in a Sondheim musical, especially those who aren't stage actors.
Things that seem odd like the wolf and the stepmother and sisters cutting off toes are all original fairy tales before they got made happier for more modern children. It is weird and horrible but in the original red riding hood, the wolf is there to represent men being the bad ones and the red cape symbolising not only a girl becoming a woman but the innocence of it. I don't like the stories involved and is why they are so out of place in this movie but the idea of the musical was to explore the darker sides.
Honestly, had the musical been finished after the first act, I would be much happier but I really struggle to get through this too, mainly came along to see your reaction and be able to admire the orchestration.
Les Misérables is considered one of the greatest musicals of all time and the movie stars some of the best actors. Most of it is sung through but it varies more than Into The Woods.

Right...so...five musicals to see and five to skip and five I think have merit for other reasons than the quality of the music. These are the movie adaptations of broadway shows just to be clear. And yeah, spoiler alert for the bad ones because they're bad and no one should watch them anyway because they suck in oh so many ways
These are 'good':
1.) Evita. (based on life and....'works'....of Eva Peron, wife of president Juan Peron of Argentina
2.) Wizard of Oz...which I think you might already have seen...
3.) Little Shop of Horrors
4.) In the Heights (Lin Manuel Miranda)
5.) Annie.
These are 'bad'
1.) Cats -JESUS CHRIST DO NOT. The decision to CGI human faces onto furry bodies is strange and frankly terrifying. Don't do this to yourself. It took me so long to figure out the plot to this thing, insomuch as there isn't one. It's just a bunch of weird people in an alley having a sing off over who gets to die and go to cat heaven on a UFO made from a tire. It explains nothing. I used to love the musical, but then I didn't have as much of a brain back when I was a kid. I loved the songs. It was easy to follow because there wasn't anything like a plot or character development to get in the way. This musical has made 5 billion dollars so far. Who knows why.
2.) Grease - Sue me. It's a crap plot about giving up your entire personality and future potential for an asshole.
3.) Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - Don't get me started. I won't stop. Just know that there is an entire song and dance number about how kidnapping and rape is an acceptable, even commendable way to land a wife. No, I'm not kidding. I wish I was. I hate this show.
4.) Mamma Mia! Recycled ABBA showtunes. Meryl Streep ain't as hot as she's made out to be. I prefer her as Florence Foster Jenkins. Pierce Brosnan can't sing. What's the plot about again? Does anything actually HAPPEN in this movie? At all?
5.) Phantom of the Opera - *siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh* Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. There are no opera voices in the cast. Minnie Driver, the best singer, is dubbed. Why is Gerard Butler in this movie? I want to have some serious words with the makeup department.
And here are the ambiguous ones
1.) Florence Foster Jenkins. This is not a musical, thank god, but I'm putting it here because dammit I love Florence Foster Jenkins. She was a badass chick back in the 40s who woke up one morning and decided she was an opera singer destined for Carnegie Hall. Could she sing? NOPE. Carry a tune? NOPE. Hit a single accurate note of any kind? Only with a sledgehammer. Simon Cowell would eat her alive. But she was rich and bored and hey, she had a PLAN. "Some may say I couldn't sing, but no one can say that I didn't." --FFJ You go on and do you, you glorious nuclear holocaust of a trainwreck!
2.) Les Misérables. I'm not saying that Russell Crowe can't sing. He can. He was just seriously, seriously miscast. He has a pop music voice, and one that does not translate well to the musical format. Pretty much everyone in the cast was miscast except for Anne Hathaway and Samantha Barks (who is a veteran of the stage show and the best actress in the entire movie, imo) Other roles were spottily cast. but the cinematography is excellent. Yet for all the scope of the show, it somehow felt smaller on a movie screen and that's just weird. Cutting entire scenes from character to character is partially at fault for this, I think. It's fine if you haven't seen it on stage. Better that way actually, when you're not comparing it to the stage version. I've been a huge fan of the musical for over 20 years and been on production crews twice and this movie was such a disappointment.
3.) Repo!: The Genetic Opera. Again, not a musical adaptation but an original exercise in weirdness that for whatever reason appeals to me. This is another cult film on the level of Rocky Horror Picture Show and has some major, major names in it. I STILL would very much like to know who the hell pulled what strings to get Sarah Brightman on board with this project. Catchy. Gorey. Paris Hilton. Interesting story. I love it, but I'm slightly strange.
4.) Reefer Madness - comedy music adaptation of a 50's era drug PSA. It's a trip and a half. Literally.

I'd gladly take South Pacific over Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. That one has ISSUES.

This musical has always rubbed me the wrong way and the movie I couldn't get at all. Sudden, random character death, weirdass song lyrics and uh....questionable themes. "Agony" the only awesome part of the thing to me. Yeah if you're looking to dip your toes into musicals, this is not the one.

Greatest Showman isn't a Broadway adaptation, it's a director's Moulin Rouge fanfiction.
There’s plenty of actual Broadway to choose from, like “Chicago”, “The Sound of Music”, “The King & I”, and…okay, maybe “South Pacific” didn’t work out so well. 😅

Sad, so far I was always too late to get a hiher level…I'd like to suggest "Les Miserable" or "Greatest Showman", those are really great musical adaptations
