I’d forgotten there were a few faux-“true story” (that’s hardly a plot spoiler, btw) before this one, since afterwards, it became a PLAGUE: say “Found footage exorcism” and watch a 00’s horror fan’s expression go 🙄🤦 You’ll get the same reaction with two words: “Paranormal Activity”. (Although, TBF, Norway’s “Trollhunter” was probably the standout, even though it had the same annoying plot conventions and contrived acting of every other found-footage thriller.)

There were a grand total of five before this one, and none of them were widely released. Four were produced in the 80's or before and given the ages of the contemporary movie going demographic at the time had been born AFTER that. One was a flop, one was notorious and banned from a bunch of places, and two weren't even shown in America so I'm confused as to what you mean by the audience overreacting when they "found out" it was "another one." I think you have your timelines confused.

2022-10-09 12:54:22 +0000 UTCIt would be interesting to see a Blair Witch reaction now (even from a chicken 😛), since the movie was front-loaded with backlash when it came out in theaters: First, a SW:E1-disgruntled audience played up the hype of it being a “homemade” movie that would “change the industry”, and then the movie’s own hype overplayed the “true story”, and the audience overreacted when they found out it was just another fictional found-footage thriller. Nowadays, we’re….USED to those, so we can see if it still works on its own merit. FWIW, if we have to have one found-footage thriller, this is the one.
