This was one of those cases where, in order to make the comic work, I needed one of the characters do something silly. The most logical options were me and Rick. I had a choice to make, but be reasonable. It wasn’t going to be me.
The act of buying souvenirs often leads to buying things we don’t need, for questionable reasons. I own a couple of mugs from a series that are the same size and shape but have the names and landmarks of different places on them. The idea is that when you visit a city you go buy the mug of that city, and eventually you’ll have a set of cups that remind you of trips you’ve taken. This only works if the mugs are for sale somewhere in most major cities. Luckily, they’re sold by Starbucks, so they have that covered. I was in a city I’d never visited, and was at a Starbucks, looking at the mugs when I realized that buying one sent my money not to the people of the new place I was visiting, but to a corporation that is based in Seattle, a city where I used to live. In that moment, my collection of those mugs topped out at two.
That said, it’s just Missy and me here, so unless I start feeding the cats out of coffee mugs, we don’t actually need more than two, do we?
