I know I talk more than one might expect about my time as a cast member at Walt Disney World. I have always found the place interesting, and working there only made it more fascinating to me.
What does that have to do with this comic about calling in sick? There are two things about calling in sick that remind me of my time working for the mouse.
1. Walt Disney World is the best place to call in sick to, because you don’t call your immediate supervisor, or even one of your coworkers. As a Walt Disney World cast member, you call in sick (or at least did when I worked there) to a hotline staffed entirely by people you have never met and who have no idea who you are. They answered the phone, I told them my name, and my work location, and they thanked me and hung up. No guilt trip. No asking about my symptoms. None of that. It was like calling in a hit in the John Wick movies. Fantastic!
2. I called in sick to that job a lot. I mean, a lot a lot. Not just because it was easy, but because I got sick all the time. As a kid I was really prone to sore throats and coughs. Working in the parks brought that back with a vengeance. I met people every day from all over the globe, and was exposed to their viruses. I ended up getting strep-throat like twice to three times a year. Ironic, since I didn’t need to sound terrible to call in sick at the time, but I did naturally.
(Note: I got my tonsils out, and I haven’t had strep since. Sure, I prevented future sore throats by giving myself the worst sore throat ever, but it has been worth it. If you get lots of sore throats, and still have your tonsils, maybe talk to your doctor about that.)
