The screenwriter reportedly wanted to do a version of the Judge Dredd comic book (“I am the LAW!”), but couldn’t get the rights to the character, so invented his own, right down to the same faceless visor, dystopian future setting and dark 80’s-satire humor…
And ended up doing a better Dredd movie than Sylvester Stallone or Karl Urban did with the real thing,

I was 18 and working at a movie theater (in Greenbelt Maryland), when this came out (Summer 1987). That was a great summer for movies, I had a blast doing that job. Best (most fun) job I ever had.
