How to Process Recognition

Apparently, a coworker asked him out of the blue if he was “Rick from Basic Instructions.” When Ric admitted that he was, this person told him that he had been a big fan of Basic Instructions since high school. I’m not sure that Ric being recognizable from the insulting portrayal of him in my comic strip was made any more pleasant by the idea that the person who recognized him enjoyed the insulting portrayal, and has for a long time.
I didn’t ask if Rick was wearing his comfy sweater when he was recognized, but it was January in Seattle. It seems like a safe bet. I don’t know if you’ve ever lived through a Seattle winter, but cozy sweaters are the only thing that can keep you sane.
According to everybody’s favorite feature of my comic, the copyright date, I made the first few Basic Instructions in 2003. That means I’ve been at this, off-and-on for about twenty years. That is madness, of course, and it wouldn’t have been possible without all you your support. Thanks!

I am more impressed that the sweater has survived 20 years with regular winter use.

2023-02-23 06:18:27 +0000 UTCThe closest thing I have gotten to recognizing someone from Basic Instructions was when I read a book and thought "Huh. I bet this author is a Basic Instruction fan. He writes in a way that is kind of similar to those strips. Then I realized the author of the Magic 2.0 books had THE SAME NAME as the author of the webcomic. What a strange coincidence! Hey, whaitaminute… (I am not a smart person.)
