How to Narrow Down the Suspects

It’s odd, the Knifeketeer has always been one of my favorite characters to write for, but this is the first comic starring him I’ve come up with for the new run. I have no explanation for that. I guess it shows that if there’s a character you like who hasn’t resurfaced yet, there’s still reason to hope.

Many Superheroes are, essentially, murderers who murder murderers: Wolverine, the Punisher, Deadpool, Thor. (He fights with an electrified hammer. Do you think he’s just tapping people hard enough to give them a slight concussion and zapping them enough to taze them?)

There are some superheroes that make a point of not killing. If memory serves, long ago, Batman was totally dedicated to non-lethality. That said, his methods always involved a lot of punching and kicking on precarious rooftops. There’s probably a good Batman story to be written showing how the earlier, goodie-goodie Batman gave way to the later, grim-dark Batman slowly, as he got desensitized over the course of many, many accidental mugger deaths.

The original Bat-Man comic, he had no problem shooting and killing criminals with a gun. When parents started complaining, DC stopped Bat-Man from killing and reduced him to a violent vigilante/detective instead, who beat people up. But the criminals still were bloodthirtsy but dumb killers. One infamous comic, Bat_man finally tracks down the lowlife criminal who killed his parents, he dramatically rips off his mask, revealing he is Bruce Wayne before the frightened thug, and points at him accusingly, "YOU! YOU! YOU ARE THE ONE WHO KILLED MY PARENTS!". For some reason, he lets the guy escape, who goes back to the gang he was in. He confesses the whole story to them, when they ask why the Bat-Man let him go. One gang member shouts out, "You mean, if you didn't kill this guy's parents there woulda' been no Bat_man?" On the spot, everyone angrily shoots the poor sap into a bloody mess and he dies immediately. Then, one of the thugs go, "Holy cripes! We fergot to ask ... he died knowin' who da' Bat-Man wuz! You idiot! " and the gang starts shooting each other to death. Bat-Man watches from afar, feels empty, now that he has been avenged, and decides to keep on being the dark avenger of the night.
