As those who read the comments know, in the strip Mullet Boss plays the trombone, but in real life it is Ric who has dedicated his life to the way of the slide and spit-valve. I heard about the Trombone Champ, thought it was hilarious, then chose not to mention it to Ric for fear of insulting him. Two days later, he contacted me to tell me about the hilarious game he heard about and was irritated that I hadn’t told him.
Ric once described to me the challenge of being a trombonist. He said it takes a lot of practice and hard work to make it not sound like a trombone. At the time, I thought that was a ridiculous statement, but having played Trombone Champ, now I know what he meant.
