It's interesting that you said you think Will is crushing on El. I actually think maybe he is crushing on Mike. He did paint a picture and took it with him to the airport, so obviously it was ment for Mike. But he never gave it to him. Also, in the scene where El is bullied on the skating rink, when that one dude is filming her, you can see a date in the bottom left corner of the screen through the camera. March 22, 1986. That is actually Will's birthday. Joyce said so in one of the ealier seasons. So on top of everything, they forgot his birthday.
