2022-05-05 19:08:59 +0000 UTCAlthough this is one of Pixar’s new string of films where they let their directors do personal ethnic family-album reminiscences, I’m thinking the director also took a…LITTLE fan-inspiration from the classic old-school Japanese anime “Ranma 1/2”, about a martial-arts family dealing with half a dozen crazy Chinese curses, including the dad occasionally turning into a black-and-white giant-panda bear. (Not sure if it’s on Crunchyroll, but it’s streaming free elsewhere, and worth looking up.) That one’s more of a general boys’ story, while this one, from the fangirl reaction so far, seems to gatekeep that you’re not “allowed” to like it unless you happened to be Asian, Canadian, were a 90’s boyband fan, or had your mom explain your period to you when you were twelve.
