Raul Julia playing Bison saved this movie, what a performance by him. He carried them all.

I don't know if you've ever watched the old 60's "Batman" TV show, but fans today have a love-hate relationship with the fact that show was played as a campy tongue-in-cheek spoof on the comic, with a comically deadpan Adam West as the hero. The second season of the show was disappointingly goofy, but the first season was fondly remembered for mixing good comic-canon with the spoof, and if West hadn't been playing it so straight, it wouldn't have worked. And the 1980 "Flash Gordon" movie did it even better. Here, I don't think game fans were expecting a spoofy Street Fighter, but somehow, intentionally or not, Jean-Claude’s ego thinking he's in a SERIOUS Van Damme film actually makes it sort of work--Yes, he's usually awful, but if he just showed up to play around and the movie goofed and nudged us in the ribs, it would have been obnoxious, but Raul Julia and Wes Studi (as Sagat) were just straight-arrow enough to be in on the vibe the movie was going for.
