THSK Vol. 1 Chapter 3 Part 2

Chapter 3 Part 2

The Valugan Empire, with its capital in Aldan, was the world's leading metropolis. Boasting a population exceeding 3,500,000, it was situated in the northern part of the Empire. Its coastal location had fostered bustling trade, led by the Crimea Trading Company, generating significant profits.

Aldan epitomized the growth befitting the capital of the Empire.

Due to its considerable distance from the southern Kingdom, travel by carriage took several days. While a quicker journey might have been possible by dragon mount, there was no urgent need to hasten the journey, so the carriage sufficed.

"Thank you for your hard work, Your Imperial Highness."

"Thank you. You must be tired, too?"

"No, I am fine."

Having stepped out of the carriage, we were greeted by the cityscape of Aldan. The city, with its many high-rise buildings featuring a unified and calming color palette, lined up impressively towards the Imperial Castle. The closer we got to the city's center, the more numerous the buildings became, leaving an overwhelming impression.

"This place is amazing... completely different from the Kingdom."

In my first life, I never had the chance to leisurely observe the cityscapes of the Empire.

I had no recollection of such magnificent cityscapes, as my focus had been solely on cutting down enemies in front of me.

"You're right. The architectural style of the Empire is distinct from that of the Kingdom. The Kingdom prioritizes beauty, while the Empire emphasizes functionality and fortification of cities. People who come here from the Kingdom often say it feels like stepping into another world."

"That makes sense now that you mention it."

As she said, the buildings of the Empire were made from robust materials, and the city walls surrounding it were tall and thick.

"The houses on the outskirts of the city use metal for their exterior walls, don't they?"

"Yes, the houses on the outskirts are particularly sturdy and resistant to fire."

――I can strongly agree with her words on the emphasized fortification.

"Aldan faces the sea, so the entrances to the city from the land are limited. In the past, the Imperial Army, cornered by allied forces led by the Kingdom's army, fought in Aldan as their last stronghold. It was thanks to the robust defense of this city that they were able to withstand the fierce attacks from the allied forces for seven months, despite being overwhelmingly outnumbered..."

The Empire's eventual defeat was a long process, with its Imperial Army having fought bravely and perished at this location. Princess Valtrune must have fought desperately to defend this place. Her profile seemed to host a complex mix of emotions, blending nostalgia and sadness.

"Your Imperial Highness."

"Mm?"

"This time, we will definitely protect it."

A past where the imperial capital had fallen did not exist in this world.

It was a bloodstained history from another world, etched only in her memories and mine.

――I will not let a future that makes her sad come to pass.

"Yes, you are right. This time, definitely!"

Princess Valtrune held my hand tightly.

It was warm, slender, and supple, yet at the same time, I could feel its strength. The thought of this beautiful hand being stained with blood and bearing the sorrow of many had made my chest ache.

Surely, that was the destiny bestowed upon her. But, I could lighten the burden she had to bear.

"I will support you――only you, as long as I live."

"In that case, I will rely on you without hesitation."

"Please leave it to me."

That was why the day to let go of this hand would never come.

I vowed to never let this city turn into a bloodstained battlefield again.

"We're going to look for people, right?"

"Yes, Aldia. I can't move around freely... so, I'm counting on you."

"Yes, as you wish."

I sincerely hoped from the bottom of my heart that this peace would continue to be maintained.

Chapter 3 Part 1

Chapter 3 - The Princess's Exclusive Knight and the Promising Army

The meeting with Prince Ixion went smoothly, just as Princess Valtrune had planned. He promised to side with the Empire. However, since it was only a verbal agreement, I was unsure how much trust to place in it. Nonetheless, the Princess was in a great mood.

After leaving the royal castle, the Princess and I boarded a carriage prepared for our journey to the imperial capital of Aldan.

“Um, Your Imperial Highness?”

“What’s the matter?”

“About Prince Ixion, are you certain this is fine?”

We discussed the promise she had made with Prince Ixion――to make him the next king.

“He seemed sincere and competent, just as Your Imperial Highness had said.”

But he was a prince of the Kingdom. Despite his lack of involvement in the succession, the ease with which our discussion progressed felt somewhat unnatural. He was too calm and agreed too readily to our demands, which only heightened my unease.

“What are you trying to say, Aldia?”

“It all went too smoothly. I can’t help but fear he might betray us.”

As I expressed my concerns, she also nodded in agreement, responding, “Indeed”.

Her words, 'I will make you the next king', must have been quite appealing to Prince Ixion. But would he have so readily believed the words of a princess from another country?

At first glance, Prince Ixion's attitude seemed very favorable towards her. However, it was impossible to fully discern his true feelings. Many masked their true intentions behind a facade, especially in the world of royalty and nobility, where such duplicity was all too common.

“...Please don’t worry about it,” she said, brushing aside my concerns with a gentle tone as she sat beside me.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I understand Aldia's concerns, but…”

Her smile was that of an ideal princess, and she gently placed her hand on the back of mine, making my heart race. Unable to grasp her intentions, I sat up straight as she began to speak.

“Even if Prince Ixion betrays us, I have considered that possibility. But don't worry, I have everything under control.”

“Okay…”

“We’ll be fine. The future we desire is surely within reach.”

If she said so, then we must have been on solid ground. I resolved to do everything in my power for her.

“What will we do once we return to the Empire?”

“Well… just as I have connections with Prince Ixion, there are likely those in the Empire connected to the Kingdom's upper echelons.”

“That’s true.”

In the event of a war between the two countries, having internal threats would increase the likelihood of weaknesses being exploited. It seemed that we needed to thoroughly root out any traitors, a constant throughout history. Traitors rarely made grand movements; they tended to act cautiously.

“It will be tough to find them.”

“Not necessarily.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes. Even though times have changed, with my knowledge from the previous world, I can somewhat predict who the Empire's traitors are.”

“I see.”

We had a unique advantage that others lacked――the experience of a future we had already lived through. However, even if she could identify the traitors, her status made it difficult for her to act directly.

“Your Imperial Highness, may I take the lead in investigating within the Empire?”

That was why I would take on that role. To be her hands and feet, a foundation for the future she desired.

“Yes, thank you. But I won’t leave it all to you. It’s a huge task.”

She understood there were limits to what I could achieve alone.

“So, you plan to entrust others as well?”

“That's right. I have my eyes on some capable and trustworthy individuals. If we can bring them to our side, things will proceed more smoothly later on.”

“I see.”

Gathering allies... it seemed to hinge on negotiations.

“Then, let's start by winning over those whom Your Imperial Highness trusts.”

“Could you do that for me?”

“Please leave it to me.”

She aimed to achieve feats worthy of an empress. To do so, she needed many allies. That was why I followed her, committed to realizing her ideals.

Chapter 4 Part 1

After that, Reid and Elria never met Rufus again. This was partly due to the teachers arranging the training schedules to prevent any contact between classes, especially after the mock battle between Elria and Rufus.

However... Rufus was nowhere to be seen, even in the dining hall.

According to what Alma had heard from the teacher in charge, “Rufus has been applying for permission to use the training grounds after school and has been training alone”.

Details beyond that were confidential due to inter-class policy, but it seemed that the teacher was in high spirits, so the training was likely going well.

However... not only did they have to keep their promise to Rufus, but Reid and Elria also had to face the looming exam.

“――So, let me explain the terms for this conditional exam,” Alma said, standing at the lectern with chalk streaking across the blackboard.

“Well, compared to last time, it’s pretty straightforward. Teams previously formed in each class will work together, and points will be added to your score based on the number of opponents you incapacitate by the end of the exam.”

“A question. How is incapacitation determined?” a student asked, raising a hand.

Alma nodded gracefully and pulled out two bracelet-type magic devices from her pocket.

“Incapacitation is determined by these bracelets. When they detect a lethal spell of the third tier or higher, they activate and forcibly teleport the person wearing them. In other words, a person teleported by this bracelet is considered incapacitated.”

With that said, Alma fitted the bracelet on her arm and stood in front of the students.

“Although there's no visible change, a thin layer of magic power forms over the skin of the person wearing it. It detects magic power other than its own wearer's and activates upon a certain level of impact, causing an immediate teleportation of the wearer. It’s fine over clothes and shoes, but beware, it will activate even if you touch an ally's magic with your own bare hands.”

After finishing the explanation, she held up the other bracelet.

This one was a gold-painted bracelet, far more conspicuous than the first.

“This golden bracelet will be distributed to one member of each team. The mechanism is the same, but... if the owner of this bracelet is incapacitated, more points will be added to your score.”

“Um... a question. Is it okay for the team to decide freely who wears the golden bracelet?”

“What a good question. Yes, the team can decide freely who owns it. The strongest person, someone specialized in defense, or someone skilled in emergency escapes... When you decide who will own it, you should also decide your team's overall strategy.”

After answering, she smiled.

“If the person holding the golden bracelet is incapacitated――that team will suffer a significant deduction in points. If the score ends up negative, it will carry over to subsequent exams.”

This meant that if a team was defeated without accomplishing anything, even an excellent score in the next exam would, at best, only offset the deficit or, at worst, leave the team with a negative score.

The fate of those who could not recover was all too clear.

“If you end the final exam with negative points, those individuals will be excluded from next year's secondary placement and will have to leave the academy.”

Being a mage was not solely about having a vast amount of magic power or superior combat skills. A mage had to possess the skills to make good judgments and decisions in all situations.

Magic was merely a means to achieve an objective under various conditions. Only those who could accurately assess their circumstances and take the best course of action were allowed to wield the powerful weapon known as magic.

“Mages cannot afford to fail. So――act as if your own or someone else’s life depends on it and think until your brain burns out.”

The students, moved by Alma's words, unanimously responded with a loud "Yes!".

Pleased with their reaction, Alma then tapped Philia, who was standing next to her, on the shoulder.

“Well, that’s it for my part! I have to give further explanations to the problem children, so please consult Philia about the conditional exam.”

“Y-Yes! If you have any doubts or concerns about the exam, or any minor issues, please feel free to ask me!”

As the students turned towards Philia, Alma approached Reid and the others with a deep sigh.

“That being said, here's a notice for you, the 'problem children' team.”

“She is saying something about you, Kid Faregh.”

“Why are you throwing shade at me!?”

“Ah, it seems we’re all being labeled as problem children…”

“Let’s at least try to be the last bastion of conscience.”

“Yes, thanks for the spirited response. Now, there’s something I want to ask――” Alma began, but then she glanced at the one person who had not reacted.

There lay Elria――using Reid’s lap as a pillow, sleeping soundly.

“...Without listening to my explanation, why is she asleep?”

"If I had to explain it simply, it's due to lack of sleep."

"Is it because the exam is right around the corner and she was cramming in preparation?"

"No, not exactly. With the exam nearing, I was doing some last-minute fine-tuning, so to speak, and had been sparring with Kid Faregh. I hadn't left any note, so it seems that she had waited in our room until I returned."

"Can you not suddenly start gushing about it?"

"That’s why, struggling to stay awake, she was fidgeting in front of our room’s door. That’s the cause."

"She’s like a cat that gets anxious when its owner doesn't come home."

As Alma poked Elria's cheek with a look of exasperation, Elria's eyes opened slightly.

"......Nngh."

Then, with a strange noise, she sluggishly approached Alma and hugged her. She pressed her head firmly against Alma’s chest.

"......Fluffy," she muttered with sleepy eyes, and then returned to Reid and promptly fell asleep again.

".......Eh, what was that all about?"

"Don't look for meaning in a lethargic Elria."

"So, basically, she did that without any reason?"

"If I had to take a guess, maybe she smelled something different and decided to mark it with her scent by snuggling up, something like that."

"Even I think it's a bit much to treat your fiancée like a cat."

"No, you see, Alma-sensei... Elria-sama does check for scents with females, but when it comes to males, she shows no interest in anyone but Reid-san. Ultimately, her instinct is to always return to Reid-san. It's advanced flaunting on an instinctual level."

"Must be nice, being all cheerful before the exam..."

Listening to Millis's additional explanation, Alma sighed with a look of incredulity. She then decided it was time to get back to the main topic.

"So, the reason I came was to inform you that the contents of His Excellency's exam have been changed."

"Is there another change?"

"Well, you know His Excellency can't use the magic bracelet, right? That means safety can't be guaranteed, so it's been decided to switch to evaluating another person just like Elria-chan."

"Ahh, I thought it might be something like that," Reid replied in a light tone, though it was clear that there was an intention to interfere with him.

After all, it had already been discussed that magic tools and magic equipment would be unusable, and the overview of the exam content had been created before training started. It was unthinkable that such a change would be announced just before the exam.

Moreover, it was impossible for Reid, who could not use magic, to teach magic to a substitute student just before the exam.

However――there was already someone suitable to be Reid’s proxy.

"With that said, you need to do your best as my proxy, Kid Faregh," Reid said with a laugh as he lightly patted Faregh's back.

But, the person in question wore a dubious expression.

"…Are you really planning to make me the proxy for evaluation?"

"Yes. Since I unusually took the time to teach someone and even trained you to handle a sword, it's only right that you serve as my proxy."

"That's not what I mean. Besides... if I end up not being able to do anything like before, you will go through the exam without receiving any evaluation," Faregh said with a slight tension in his voice.

If Faregh, serving as Reid's proxy, fell short in the evaluation, all the criticism would be directed at Reid.

And, since Reid was unable to use magic, depending on the evaluation, expulsion from the academy could have been a possibility.

However, Reid replied without concern.

"Then let me ask you this, do you plan to receive a low evaluation in the exam?"

"O-Of course not!! As the eldest son of the proud Welminan family, it would be a lifelong shame to produce a pitiful performance and tarnish the family name!!"

"Exactly. That's why you're the one," Reid continued, his words laced with amusement.

"Those who cherish their vanity and self-esteem are mostly good for nothing. But... if they're not just all talk and can actually prove their worth with genuine effort, they're the real deal."

For this reason, he had chosen Faregh as his proxy. Faregh, honoring his family name and pride, refused to abandon his comrades and strove to save them.

"Well, think of me as just an extra. At least I've trained you enough to be useful in actual combat, and if you fail, it just means I misjudged your ability and that’s that."

"Haa... Don’t be ridiculous. I refuse to go through such a disgrace ever again."

With that, Faregh let out a dry laugh, and then――

"――In the name of Welminan, I shall firmly seize victory," he declared with a resolute smile.

Nodding back at Faregh, Reid then made a declaration.

"So, tell them that my proxy is Faregh Welminan."

"Alright, alright. This is going to be interesting… When those complainers hear that the notorious young master of the Welminan household is the proxy, they’ll probably flip."

"…Please wait a moment, Kanos-sensei. What kind of reputation do I have?"

"Oh, you know, they say things like 'He’s only good with magic and attitude' or 'If complaining were a sport, he'd be in the tenth tier,' all while laughing, those nobles."

"Hahahaha… Well, if that’s the case, I'll have to show them my true power and shut them up…!!" Faregh said, his anger fueling a menacing grin as he flickered flames. It was mostly his own doing, but it was good that he had been motivated.

"By the way… why does Kanos-sensei refer to you, a commoner, as 'His Excellency'?"

"Don't call me a commoner. Well, it’s sort of a nickname. I was somewhat of a chess buddy with Alma-sensei’s grandfather, and I was decently strong, so they started calling me 'His Excellency'."

"That's right. I’ve heard a lot from my grandfather, and for me, you're like a capable junior, so I call you 'His excellency' out of respect."

"Oh, is that so! I know a thing or two about chess, and my father loves it and plays in his free time, so I should introduce you to him sometime!"

Listening to their conversation, Faregh's eyes sparkled without a hint of doubt. Such naivety was befitting of someone from a good family, but it was concerning that he might be easily deceived someday.

"Anyway, I have something to tell both of you. May we step outside for a bit?"

"Sure thing. Elria, we’re going outside, so wake up."

"Mmm…"

Rubbing her eyes, Reid helped Elria to stand up and guided her towards the hallway.

After walking for a while, once Alma confirmed there was no one around, she began to speak.

"So, it's about the investigation concerning the last incident, right?"

"Yeah. Elria couldn’t sleep because she was worried about it."

Elria had been waiting for Reid because she thought he was receiving the report from Alma and had forced herself to stay awake to hear the results.

"I see. It’s partly my fault for being delayed with the exam preparations, but I should have reported back sooner."

"Mm… It's okay, thank you for looking into it…"

"You’re welcome."

As Elria, slightly more awake, made a sleepy bow of thanks, Alma gave her a gentle pat on the head with a wry smile.

Then, with a serious expression, Alma began her report.

"As for the last incident... the method was immediately suspected to be summoning magic, and any mage who has ever used summoning magic was questioned. People from Serios are still being interrogated under the guise of cooperation."

"Well, it’s fair since the scale of it is still unknown."

The appearance of multiple ‘Armament Dragons’ suggested that it was unlikely the act of a lone individual.

Creating a vessel for magical beasts requires an immense amount of magic power, which increases with the size and number of magical beasts.

To summon several large magical beasts like ‘Armament Dragons’ alone would be nearly impossible. If it had been possible, it would likely have been by highly recognized individuals, such as special rank or first-class mages. Therefore, an organized crime by multiple individuals seemed more likely.

"Well, because of that, mages from Serios are under suspicion... but since parts of the remains have been found, the suspicion should be cleared soon."

Summoned vessels vanished once their magic power was depleted, so the remains at the scene suggested that it might not have been summoning magic after all, hence the ongoing 'continuous questioning'.

"As for the mage known as 'Teacher', it's a common nickname, so there were no leads... but it's probably not Rufus Rylus herself involved, I guess."

"Mm… Got it. That’s a bit reassuring."

With her concerns somewhat eased, Elria nodded affirmatively. She seemed to be fully awake now, as her speech and expressions appeared brisk.

"So, that is all for the report. Do you have anything else to ask?"

"Oh, I'll be on standby during the exam, right? What should I do in the meantime?"

"Why not watch and enjoy some tea?"

"Is that really okay...?"

"Of course. I count on His Excellency and Elria-chan as potential combatants if something were to happen. And it's easier for His Excellency to move around freely, right?"

"Yes. I also feel more at ease knowing Reid is fully prepared and on standby."

Nodding in agreement, Elria concurred with Alma's words.

"Besides, it makes me happy to know that Reid is watching."

"......Happy?"

"Yes. Because I said before, 'I'll show you something even more amazing'."

Saying that, Elria turned around and――

"――I'll show you my true strength for the first time in a while."

She smiled confidently at Reid.

Chapter 3 Part 6

After their conversation in the dining hall, Rufus quickly made her way back to her room. Taking a moment to catch her breath, she reached for the drawer in her desk. Inside was a small magic communication device.

She took it in hand and drew a deep breath――

"――Teacher! I've got something I need to ask!!"

The moment she raised her voice, a rattling sound, like something crumbling, emanated from the device. Silence ensued for a while before a voice responded.

‘Ouch, ouch, ouch... This voice… it’s Rufus-kun, right?’

"Yes! That's right!!"

‘You sound very lively... Did something good happen?’

"Err, I lost in a mock battle, and my mother scolded and hit me!"

‘That's a bit too heavy a topic for me, just waking up…’

But then, the teacher's tone changed slightly.

‘If you're using this magic device, it must be an urgent matter, right?’

"Yes. You told me I could only use it once, so I shouldn't use it unless I'm really in trouble... but I just really, really need to ask you something."

With that preface, Rufus posed her question to her mentor through the magic device.

"I want to learn how to handle the 'Guardian Dragons'."

‘...Do you mean you want to be able to command it in its complete state?’

"Yes. If I can't do that, I'll never be able to defeat Elria-chan."

Rufus was acutely aware of the difference in their strengths, having actually fought her. Not just in simple magic, but in the coordination with summoned magical beasts, and the tactics and judgment that utilized them... In all aspects, Rufus was overwhelmingly inferior.

In that case――what was needed was an overwhelming power that could surpass everything.

In the harsh natural environment of Serios, the power of the magical beasts stood at the pinnacle of the natural order.

Without the ability to wield that power, one couldn't even stand alongside it.

"That’s why I at least want to be able to fully command one of them."

‘Well... even if you manage to command one, I doubt that will be enough.’

"But! If it’s with the 'Guardian Dragon'――"

"Ah, sorry about that. In that case, I guess I'll change it to “There's absolutely no way to win”."

The Teacher spoke in their usual manner.

‘The opponent you're trying to fight is not just someone you can defeat by summoning a 'Guardian Dragon'――she is an 'absolute' being. If the 'Guardian Dragons' you contracted with are at the pinnacle of magical beasts, then she is at the pinnacle of everything.’

After saying so much, the Teacher murmured "Oops" quietly.

‘Sorry, sorry. I didn't mean to dampen your spirits, but it's better to be aware that she's that kind of opponent.’

"But then... does that mean I can't win?"

‘Ah! Sorry, sorry, please don't cry!! I'm weak against that sort of thing!!’

In a flustered voice coming from the magic device, the Teacher cleared their throat.

‘It's okay, I think there's definitely a possibility that you can win.’

"...A possibility of winning?"

‘That's right. All you have to do is command all four 'Guardian Dragons'.’

"A-All four…!? But that's impossible!! Even when I tried controlling one, it got angry and started rampaging――"

‘Because that's the 'current' Rufus. As I said before, in the future, you will be able to fully command the 'Guardian Dragons'. They know this too, which is why they've agreed to contract with you, even though your current magic power is insufficient.’

Pausing for a moment――

‘――Therefore, you just need to borrow power from your 'future' self.’

And with that, the Teacher told Rufus.

Chapter 3 Part 5

After Rufus left, Reid and Elria joined the others who remained at the workshop.

As it was already evening, they quickly returned to the academy――

"――Wow! The food is delicious!!" Millis exclaimed in high spirits, laughing loudly in the academy's dining hall.

In contrast to Millis's cheerful demeanor, Faregh let out a deep sigh.

"I wonder if I've done something irreversible…?"

"What are you talking about!? When one of us is in trouble, we help each other out!!" Millis responded, patting Faregh on the back with a thwack.

Observing the two, Reid whispered to Wiesel.

"...Hey, what's up with those two?"

"Oh... Millis wanted to know how much of a ‘favor’ she was owed for when she asks for one, so I converted our work's market rate compensation for this time..."

"...How much was it?"

"Roughly this much."

Wiesel held up five fingers with a grim face.

"……Five hundred thousand?"

"No, five million."

"……Seriously?"

"I should mention, for the sake of honor, that this amount considers the type of magic power system involved when requesting a magic craftsman, the range of the engraving, the complexity of the magic circuits, and it's based on the appropriate market rates. Moreover, the price has been reduced because she is not formally a magic craftsman."

"Shouldn't she just become a magic craftsman?"

"I fervently suggested it as well, but she said, 'If I'm going to stand out when I return home, it's best to be a mage!' So, for now, she's considering it after she becomes a mage."

"She's burying her talents for the sake of appearances back home..."

"However, it's not entirely a bad thing. Like me aiming to be a mage for the development and research of magic equipment, being in a magic-heavy environment will lead to improved precision and speed in engraving. In fact, it's common for those who were originally mages to retire and become magic craftsmen."

"And Faregh the Kid owes her, so she won't be left wandering the streets, huh?"

Since a sizable ‘favor’ was made with Faregh, a scion of a distinguished family, it makes sense why Millis would be frolicking around so happily.

"Thanks to Lady Millis, I could achieve the performance I had envisioned. So, as a magic equipment engineer, I'm left with no regrets about the perfect job."

"…The request fee skyrocketed because you got carried away, didn’t it?"

"The best work deserves the greatest reward. Besides, the Welminan family has connections everywhere, not just money, so this 'favor' can be said to be very powerful."

Wiesel adjusted his glasses and smiled as he spoke. His reasoning was sound, but it wasn't just Millis who had quite the character; Wiesel did, too.

Perhaps sensing a bright future ahead, Millis playfully engaged Elria with a cheerful smile on her face.

"So, Elria-sama, how was your date with Reid-san?"

"..............."

"Huh, Elria-sama?"

"Mm… What is it, Millis?"

"No, um… I was just wondering how your date with Reid-san went."

"Yes, it was a lot of fun. We visited various shops, ate delicious skewers at a stall, and even Shehri seemed to enjoy the walk," Elria replied, though she seemed somewhat distracted.

Noticing Elria's demeanor, Millis leaned in and whispered to Reid.

"...Reid-san, did something happen?"

"Something messy happened towards the end. It's not like I did something, or that something happened to us, so don't worry about it."

"Well, despite everything, I believe that Reid-san is someone who is considerate of others, so I'm not worried about that..."

Millis looked at Elria with concern.

It was likely that Elria was troubled by the situation involving Rufus. However, this was not something Reid and Elria should have meddled in. It was a matter related to another family's affairs, and by extension, to national matters. Given Rufus's situation, it was not a topic to be discussed carelessly with others.

".........!!"

Just as she was contemplating this, Elria suddenly perked up. Standing up with vigor while holding her tray, she declared, "I’m going to get seconds."

"Seconds…? Didn’t you have a light portion because you just had skewers?"

"I didn’t have enough, so I'm going to get some more," Elria replied in a somewhat restless manner.

Following her gaze, Reid understood her intentions.

"Got it. Maybe I'll go get seconds, too."

"Eh, you too, Reid-san?"

"Yeah. It's crowded, and it looks like it will take time, so we'll be back a bit later."

"Understood. In that case, Lord Welminan, until they return, let's discuss new magic equipment."

"No, wait, what's this about new magic equipment!?"

"Come on, Faregh-san, let’s at least hear them out. If it's new magic equipment developed by Blanche's workshop, it means we’re dealing with information not available anywhere else, you know?"

"I-Is that so? In that case, I might as well listen..."

"Then, let's start with the new combat technique that's suitable for Lord Welminan――"

Carried along by Millis's words, Faregh listened to Wiesel obediently. He would have to be careful not to get conned into buying strange things one of these days.

Ignoring the three of them, Reid followed Elria through the dining hall――

"――――May I sit next to you?"

She called out to Rufus, who was sitting at a table.

"……Eh?"

Rufus, taken aback by the sudden approach, looked up in surprise.

Reid also smiled wryly and raised his hand slightly towards the surprised Rufus.

"Uhh, you're Elria-chan's――"

"I'm Reid Frieden. It seems Elria has been quite concerned and was looking for a chance to talk with you, so she approached you."

"I-I was just asking because there was a free seat, and it just happened to be Rufus there…"

"That's impossible timing-wise, isn't it?"

Reid lightly patted Elria on the head, and Rufus smiled slightly.

"So, can we talk while we eat?"

"…Yes! Let’s eat together!" Rufus responded with a smile.

With that, Rufus crafted a broad smile, and they sat down to carry on a casual conversation.

"You were alone? Don’t you eat with your classmates?"

"Um... I don’t really eat with them much. I'm the youngest in the class, and since I can only use summoning magic, I can’t really join in on magic conversations either."

Rufus laughed as if troubled, but surely there were other reasons for her isolation. After all, she had made a pact with the ‘Guardian Dragons’ and also handled a flying steel dragon during the entrance exams to gain admission. This showed her inherent talent as a mage.

Rufus's mother had mentioned that flying steel dragons were considered inferior, but making a pact with a dragon species magical beast in the first place puts one at a very high level among summoning magic users. It wouldn't be surprising if some students envied Rufus for her exceptional abilities at such a young age.

"Um... I’m sorry, Elria-chan."

Rufus muttered an apology, slightly bowing her head.

"During the mock battle... I thought I absolutely had to win and couldn’t afford to lose... I'm sorry for causing Elria-chan’s <<Mana-Eater Wolf>> pain."

With her pale crimson eyes slightly moistened, Rufus bowed her head to Elria, who shook her head in response.

"It's okay, Shehri wasn't angry."

"......Really?"

"Yeah. Besides, as I said in the park, it was my fault for stopping the battle midway."

"N-No, that's not it! It's true that Rafika was barely able to move, and since it was a mock battle, not an actual one, it should have been stopped...!!"

"Since mock battles are meant to simulate actual combat, it was my fault for not considering every situation."

"But if I had admitted defeat, Rafika wouldn't have acted recklessly!"

"Rafika tried hard to fulfill Rufus's wishes. It’s such a good child."

"Elria-chan's Shehri also obeyed orders precisely. It was amazing!!"

And so, they waved their hands at each other, each denying and praising the other. However, amidst this exchange, Elria calmly declared, "That's why――next time, I definitely won't lose."

Hearing this, Rufus tensed up slightly.

"In the next conditional exam, I will be restricted by the academy to only use magic up to the third tier. But even so, I'm confident I can win and will put forth all my effort to ensure I don't lose."

Rufus knew this was not mere arrogance. She understood from actual combat experience.

The flying steel dragon Rufus summoned and commanded was estimated to be at least of the eighth tier, and considering the vessel’s movements, it would not be surprising if it matched the ninth tier. However, Elria had overwhelmed it using a <<Mana-Eater Wolf>>, which was of the lower fifth tier and even below the dragon species in rank.

Elria not only could use the exceptional technique of ‘Weighted Multiplication Deployment’ but also had overwhelming magic combat experience.

Even with the restriction of only using third tier magic, if Elria declared she would "give her all", she would surely be able to seize victory.

That was why Elria had also told Rufus's mother that her intention was "not out of pity".

Elria admitted that the incident in the mock battle was due to her own complacency. She declared that this time, she would shed all that and fight with all her might to win.

"I also have an unwavering purpose. It may seem trivial compared to your circumstances――but for me, it's a promise that absolutely must be fulfilled."

To settle a millennium-old conflict.

It was a pretext but also a necessary ritual to significantly change their relationship, a ceremony for two who were once enemies to come together anew.

"That’s why, I will absolutely not lose."

With a firm attitude, Elria declared again.

Rufus then, with a twisted expression――

"――Elria-chan, you are truly strong."

Rufus murmured, her face almost tearful.

"I... I just managed to make a contract with the children of the 'Guardian Dragons'."

Saying this, Rufus began to talk about herself.

"I originally didn't intend to make a contract with the 'Guardian Dragons'. All I wanted was to become a mage with Rafika, who has been with me since I was born."

But Rufus paused her words.

"My teacher said, 'You can make a contract with the Guardian Dragons', and believing those words, I approached the children of the ‘Guardian Dragons’, and they accepted me, forming a contract."

"......Teacher?"

"Yes. The teacher is someone who studies ‘Guardian Dragons’. They taught me things I didn't know, which weren't even in the literature."

That was how Rufus established a contract with the ‘Guardian Dragons’ that symbolized Serios. However, with that came an overwhelmingly heavy responsibility.

"At first, my mother was happy. Since our family was not from the legal wife's line but from a concubine's, the harder I worked, the more my grandfather praised us."

This status and blessing were ones they would not have originally received. Such privileges were granted to those who had fulfilled their contracts with the 'Guardian Dragons'. However, that meant one had to be a 'Contractor of the Guardian Dragons', similar to someone who was once required to take on the role of a――'Hero'.

"Every time I summoned Rafika… my mother started to get mad at me. Even though I finally managed to subdue the 'Guardian Dragons', she wondered why I wouldn’t use it."

"…Is it because you couldn’t fully control the 'Guardian Dragons'?"

"Yes… The children of the 'Guardian Dragons' are proud creatures, and if they find their medium lacking in magic power, they get angry and start rampaging, obeying or disobeying orders depending on their mood."

Summoning magic was different from other kinds of magic in that the relationship with the summoned magical beasts was a significant factor. If the summoner sent back a magical beast that did not obey, it could worsen their relationship with the beast and could even lead to the annulment of the contract. But if they ignored a rampaging magical beast, it could harm those around them.

"I explained it to my mother, but… since I'm the contractor, they wouldn’t hurt me, and it would prove the strength of the 'Guardian Dragons', so she said it was fine," Rufus laughed weakly.

Yet, Rufus refused to use the 'Guardian Dragons'. It was not just because they could cause harm; there was also a desire not to have others despise the magical beasts that had contracted with her.

"And so, when I kept summoning only Rafika, my mother began to dislike it. Eventually, she said she’d forcefully annul my contract with Rafika… That’s when I begged to stay with her if I could be the top student at the academy."

That was why Rufus was so fixated on winning above all else.

Defeat meant losing relationships and parting ways with friends.

For Rufus, who had always been with Rafika, it was akin to losing a friend in death.

"But… my mother is also right. What's expected of me is to use the 'Guardian Dragons'. I understand how hard she struggled before I could make a contract, and I know she worked hard so I could aim to be a mage."

Then, Rufus quietly looked down and said,

"That's why… I just don't know what to do anymore."

Caught between a dear friend and a mother's expectations, she was uncertain about what to prioritize.

It was a natural conflict for a young girl.

Yet even this conflict was not allowed for Rufus.

Her upbringing, environment, the people around her, and even the country demanded that Rufus make a choice.

Seeing Rufus like this, Elria nodded slightly――

"――Then let's fight with all our might."

The moment she spoke, Rufus quietly lifted her face.

"……Eh?"

"Fighting with all your strength clears your mind. So, let's battle it out."

As if to endorse the idea, Elria nodded vigorously several times.

Rufus, taken aback by Elria's words, listened as Reid explained them further.

"Well, what Elria is trying to say is that the process is more important than the result."

"Uh… it’s not about winning or losing?"

"Something like that. If you give it your all and win, that's the best outcome. If you lose despite that, there’s nothing you can do."

"But… if I do that, my mother will…"

"If you've used all your strength and even the 'Guardian Dragons' and still lost, then it means no one else could have won either. If someone complains, just say 'then ask someone else' and walk away."

"That’s… that’s irresponsible!!"

"It's fine to be irresponsible sometimes. Others impose their expectations just because you have the power or talent, and if you fail, they demand you take responsibility――that's the real irresponsibility."

Reid said this with a smile.

"So what you need to do is either silence everyone around by winning with all your might or lose terribly after giving it your all. It’s simple and straightforward."

"But… but――"

As Rufus began to tear up, Reid lightly patted her head.

"You’ve always been thinking about others until now. So, at least when you're fighting, stop worrying about the surroundings and just focus on yourself."

After ruffling her hair, Reid flashed a toothy smile.

"Besides, if anything happens, I’ll take care of it."

"……Reid-san will?"

"Yeah. After all, I was the one who blew away the magic of Elria you saw during the exam."

"Blew away... you mean you used magic from the same tenth tier?"

"No, I just kind of punched it away."

"Punched... the magic away?"

Rufus's head was filled with question marks; it seemed as if she couldn't quite grasp the concept. However, Reid was already accustomed to this kind of reaction.

"Anyway, no matter what happens, Elria and I will take care of it, so you just need to go all out."

"............Eh?"

"Eh?"

"I want to fight with Rufus with all my strength, so I'll leave the handling to Reid."

To Reid’s surprise, Elria didn't just agree, but vigorously shook her head.

"So, I'll leave everything to Reid when something happens."

"Well, that's fine, but... just how hard are you planning to try?"

"Really hard."

"You seem like you're going to try incredibly hard..."

"Last time, I let Reid go all out, so this time it's my turn."

With an air of determination, Elria clenched her fists tightly.

It seemed that regardless of Rufus's circumstances, she simply wanted to fight.

"After all, if I don't give it my all once in a while, my skills will dull."

"But your power is limited to the third tier in the next exam, remember?"

"Showing more power than expected under limited circumstances is also a form of going all out."

"Ooh, that's quite a statement."

As the two of them engaged in this banter, Rufus let out a small laugh. A bright smile then started to spread across her face.

"Got it! I'll fight with Elria-chan with all my might!"

"Mm. I am looking forward to it."

"You better not lose to anyone else before that!"

"Of course. And Rufus, you must not lose until you fight with me."

"Then, it's a promise to fight with all our might!"

Saying that, Rufus held out her pinky finger. Seeing this, Elria also smiled and intertwined her pinky finger with Rufus's.

After nodding to each other in satisfaction, Rufus energetically stood up from her seat.

"Alright! Then I've got to do my best starting today! Thanks to both of you for listening to me!"

While smiling, Rufus waved her hands again and again until she left the dining hall.

"Reid."

At that moment, Elria unexpectedly called out to Reid.

"What's the matter, Elria?"

"I'm going to clash with Rufus with all my strength. Because I think that's what's best for her."

And so, Elria continued,

"This time, I'll leave everything to Reid."

"That's what I'm here for. It's not like something's bound to happen――"

"No, something will definitely happen."

Elria said with a stern face.

"What puzzled me was, 'Why doesn't Rufus use the ‘Guardian Dragons’?' If she's obsessed with winning, there should be no better choice."

However, Rufus stubbornly refused to use the ‘Guardian Dragons’.

Rufus had mentioned the reasons, but――

"In the first place, when you think about it, the very fact that Rufus didn't use it implies that there's something off with the contract itself."

"...What do you mean?"

"Rufus said, 'Creating a vessel that lacks magic power would anger the Guardian Dragons'. That means the 'Guardian Dragons' are aware of the lack of magic power, yet they still continue the contract with Rufus."

"Is that enough of a problem to break the contract?"

"Put yourself in their shoes, Reid. How would you feel if someone ordered you not to use your current strong body, but to go into battle with a far inferior one?"

"Well… if it's an order, I'll manage, but I guess there would be some discontent."

"Magical beasts feel the same. Naturally, they'd get angry if they were forced to fight with a weaker body than what they truly possess――especially a proud and superior magical beast like the 'Guardian Dragons' who would feel even more indignant about it."

As she spoke, Elria narrowed her eyes.

"If a trust relationship has been established since childhood, it's possible to form a contract regardless of the amount of magic power. So, there is a chance... However, I find it unnatural that all four types of 'Guardian Dragons' would continue a contract knowing there is clearly something wrong with the contractor."

Elria's sense of discomfort and the unnatural situation she remembered.

For now, there was not enough information to reach a conclusion, so it remained merely one of the ominous signs. However, there was one thing that was common to the recent troubling incidents.

"――Again, it involves magical beasts?"

Previously, Reid and the others had encountered the ‘Armament Dragon’, a magical beast thought to be extinct, in modern times.

And now... Elria felt something off about the existence of the ‘Guardian Dragons’.

"If Serios was involved in the previous incident as well, it makes sense that a magical beast like the 'Armament Dragon' would appear..."

"We can't deny the possibility, but I think the academy has also suspected the use of summoning magic for the incident and investigated it. We can't really say anything until we hear about the details of the investigation from Alma-sensei."

More importantly, Elria brought up someone.

"I'm curious about this 'Teacher' Rufus mentioned."

"The one who suggested to her that she could make a contract with the 'Guardian Dragons'?"

"Yes. Unlike magical beasts like Rafika who are used to humans from the start, 'Guardian Dragons' only inhabit the wild. So, it wasn't just about making a contract. There was also a real risk of being devoured."

Yet, this person told Rufus, "You can make a contract".

As if――this person already knew the ‘future’.

"So, when something happens, I want to trust and leave it to Reid," Elria said, looking straight at Reid.

If Rufus had been unwittingly used by someone involved in Reid and Elria's affairs, then Elria had expressed her intent to protect her with all her might.

And she trusted that Reid could handle whatever happened.

In that case――

"――Alright, I'll take care of everything."

Reid said with a strong smile, thumping his chest.

Seeing that smile, Elria also let out her own slight smile.

"And there's one more thing I'd like to ask of you."

"Sure, go ahead. Say anything at this point――"

Before Reid could finish, Elria collapsed onto the table with a thud.

Moreover, her face was pale, and she trembled.

"I want you to... carry me to our room..."

"......You overate, didn’t you?"

"Yes... my stomach hurts so much, I can't move a step..."

While conversing with Rufus, Elria also progressed with her meal.

Elria was not a light eater, but apparently, her stomach had reached its limit after a light meal before dinner, followed by a second helping.

"Seriously... you could have stopped eating halfway through."

"An old habit of not leaving leftovers has backfired..."

"I’ll commend you for finishing your meal, but let's get back and take some stomach medicine."

As he said this and bent down to offer his back, Elria slowly climbed on with sluggish movements.

"Reid's back is comfortable to ride."

"Well, I've carried you often enough to get used to it..."

"I'd also appreciate it if you could avoid shaking too much."

"Yeah, yeah. Leave that to me, too."

"Okay. I'll leave everything to Reid."

Elria cheerfully patted his shoulder as she said so.

"It's late to ask, but why are you okay with being carried but embarrassed to hold hands?"

"In my mind, piggybacking is like carrying an injured soldier, so it's fine."

"Your sensibilities are unique..."

With Elria on his back, Reid left the dining hall and headed to their room.

Chapter 3 Part 4

At first, Elria seemed tense, but as time passed, her nervousness gradually eased. By the latter part of the ‘mission’, she seemed relaxed as usual.

She still clutched the leash tightly and showed no signs of straying from Reid's side, but perhaps it was also the presence of Shehri that provided some sense of security.

"――Haa, time really flies, doesn't it?"

Sitting on a park bench, Reid looked up at the sky.

The once-clear blue was now tinged with a soft crimson, a clear indicator that much time had passed.

"Yeah. It felt quicker than I thought."

Sipping on the milk tea that she had bought from a street vendor, Elria nodded in agreement.

They had gone out to buy some tea and snacks as per Millis's request, browsed various products in the shopping district, and eaten at the marketplace stalls. Time had flown by before they knew it.

"It was refreshing to stroll through the royal capital so leisurely today."

"Yeah, revisiting places gives you a new perspective. It was interesting."

Reid had memorized the locations of key stores during their walks, but he hadn't particularly noticed the other shops. However, today he found it enjoyable to discover various shops and novelty stores that Elria showed interest in.

It was a fun experience he probably wouldn't have had on his own.

And there was one more thing that made Reid happy.

"It seems Shehri has also started to get used to me."

"Yeah, that's really good."

In response to their words, Shehri, who was at their feet, let out a cheerful bark.

Initially, Shehri had been cautious and stayed close to Elria, but after the long walk, it even started barking occasionally to call Reid over.

"It would have been perfect if it let me touch it though…!"

"...That might take a little more time."

When Reid looked down at Shehri, it barked once as if to say, "We can get to that after we get along a little better," then leaped onto Elria's lap.

There were times when Reid reached out to touch Shehri, but each time, it scampered back to Elria. It seemed that they still had a way to go to deepen their relationship.

"If you're up for it, I'd like you to accompany Shehri on its walks again, Reid."

"I’d be happy to walk it anytime. Morning or night, whenever you like."

"...I can see you’re really committed."

"I never really had a chance to interact with animals before... So, considering that, this situation is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to befriend one…!!"

As Reid passionately elaborated, Elria wore a wry smile.

"……Hmm?"

Suddenly, Elria looked up, focusing her gaze on one point.

"What's the matter? Spot something?"

"Yes... Rufus is standing over there."

Following her gaze, Reid saw a red-haired girl standing on the other side of the fountain.

Sitting on the bench, she seemed slightly restless as she looked around, likely waiting for someone.

And then... perhaps finding the person she was waiting for, Rufus's face brightened as she shouted.

"――Mother!"

A distinguished noblewoman, donned in Serios's traditional ethnic attire, stood in the distance, flanked by what appeared to be two guards.

Upon seeing her mother, Rufus eagerly ran towards her.

"Thank you for coming all this way! Are you okay? Are you not tired?"

Rufus greeted her mother, who had come from far away, with a smile and words of concern. However, her mother’s expression remained unchanged.

Without uttering a word, Rufus silently stared at her mother.

"So, why did you suddenly decide to visit? Oh, don't worry about me at the academy. I'm doing fine! Sure, it has less nature compared to Serios, but in exchange, there are tons of magic tools I've never seen before! Plus, the food is different but just as delicious!"

With an innocent smile, Rufus enthusiastically talked about her life at the academy to her mother.

"And also, you know――"

Just as Rufus was about to reflect on her recent experiences at the academy――

SLAP! Her cheek was sharply struck.

"――――eh?"

Holding her slapped cheek, Rufus timidly turned her gaze towards her mother. Her mother looked down at Rufus with a completely expressionless face.

"Rufus, I've heard that you haven't been using your Guardian Dragons at the academy," she said in a flat and cold tone.

At her words, Rufus visibly flinched.

"T-That's because... well..."

"So, you thought just your Flying Steel Dragon was enough when facing students?"

"Y-Yes! Because Rafika is strong――"

"Because of that, you lost to Vegalta's 'Reincarnation of the Sage'."

Hearing her mother's words, Rufus's eyes widened.

"How...?"

"I've been fully informed about your activities and performance at the academy. This includes your recent defeat in the mock battle against Elria Caldwen."

"T-That's not true! I didn't lose! It was a draw――"

"She was only authorized to use up to fifth tier magic by the headmistress. Yet, you could not even get the upper hand against her. After the fight was over, all you could do was a pathetic sneak attack. Are you saying that was a 'draw' in terms of abilities?"

"Because… Because, if I didn't do that..."

Each time her mother's cold words hit her, Rufus's responses became increasingly feeble.

Unmoved by her daughter's expression, Rufus's mother remained stone-faced.

Then――

"――I should have disposed of the Flying Steel Dragon before you entered the academy."

Upon hearing those words, Rufus violently lifted her face.

"W-Why!? You said if I went to Vegalta's magic academy, Rafika could be with me――"

"That was to maintain your emotional stability. Despite that, you're not using your Guardian Dragons, clinging instead to your clearly inferior Flying Steel Dragon. On top of that, you failed to properly gauge your opponent's capabilities and were defeated."

"But... Rafika is also strong, as strong as any offspring of the Guardian Dragons, and understands what I want to do because we're always together――"

"However, she's powerless in front of a Guardian Dragon's overwhelming strength."

With an unyielding demeanor, her mother spoke plainly.

"I understand you're not yet fully capable of controlling a Guardian Dragon, even though you've made a pact. But only summoning your Flying Steel Dragon because you can control it easily is nothing but indulgence. Perhaps it's time to cut off such indulgence."

"But that's not what we agreed! You said if I keep winning at the academy and become a mage, I could stay with Rafika!!"

"Yes, but――you lost, didn't you?"

There was no emotion in her eyes. However, her words seemed to suggest that she would not hesitate to dispose of a dragon if it threatened to tarnish the reputation of their nation, Serios.

"Your role is to uphold the honor of Serios, not to prove how strong your beloved dragon is. And――those who are defeated have no value."

Her words were remorseless.

From her demeanor, Rufus probably realized the gravity of it all.

"I-I swear, I won't lose next time! I'll definitely win in the exams――"

Rufus pleaded desperately to her mother, shedding tears as she begged for her understanding in order to protect her dear friend.

Witnessing this――

"――What you're saying is wrong," Elria interjected calmly.

For the first time, Rufus's mother changed her expression.

"You are――"

"Elria Caldwen. I sparred with her before," Elria declared, a tinge of anger in her tone.

"She and Rafika were strong enough. Summoning a magical beast that couldn't be properly controlled in a mock battle could lead to an accident. Therefore, Rufus's decision to bring out the Flying Steel Dragon was correct."

Turning her gaze towards Rufus, Elria continued,

"Besides, the mock battle wasn't a draw. Rufus won."

"...So, you're saying you let her win out of pity?"

"Not at all. The teacher in charge declared it a draw, but I can affirm that Rufus was clearly winning."

Without hesitation, Elria continued with conviction,

"During that mock battle, I stopped attacking, assuming I had won. However, Rufus pressed the attack. Clearly, I was the one who was arrogant. In a real battle, Rufus would have been the victor."

"That may be true in a real battle, but regarding this――"

"It doesn't change the fact. A mock battle should simulate actual combat, and it was my mistake for not doing so. In a life-and-death situation, Rufus took the best action to survive. There was nothing careless about her decisions."

Staring directly at Rufus's mother, Elria stated her words emphatically.

At that moment of silent tension between them――

"――Excuse me, may I interject?" Reid stepped in, bowing courteously.

"……And you are?"

"Forgive my late introduction. I am Reid Frieden, Elria's fiancé. First, allow me to apologize for her intrusion into your conversation."

Reid bowed again and surveyed the surroundings.

"I advise changing the venue for your discussion. This is a public space, and your conversation is attracting attention. It would be better to avoid any unnecessary misunderstandings."

Indeed, as Reid had pointed out, the people in the park were turning their attention towards them.

Rufus's mother, clearly aware of those gazes, quietly looked down.

"...Very well. Thank you for the advice, Frieden-sama."

She lowered her head slightly to Reid, then turned to her downcast daughter.

"That's all I have to say. Your future will be determined after we consider the results of the upcoming conditional exam."

"………Yes."

To her daughter, who replied with a voice barely audible, Rufus's mother and her guards left without another word.

As they walked away, Reid gently patted Elria on the head.

"Don't just jump in like that. Rufus's mother is a dignitary from another country. If you cause trouble, it'll create a headache for Alicia."

"………I'm sorry."

"Don't worry about it. I was planning to step in anyway. I'm more accustomed to handling these situations."

Smiling wryly, Reid patted Elria's head again.

At that moment, Rufus began to walk away listlessly.

"Rufus――"

"Sorry for causing you trouble."

She offered an awkward smile to Elria, who tried to call out to her.

"But this is our problem! Don't worry about it, Elria-chan. I won't lose to you in the conditional exam, that's for sure!"

Putting on a brave face, she turned and ran off.

On her small back, she carried a burden far too heavy, filled with responsibility and purpose.

RHXS Vol. 2 Chapter 3 Part 3

Chapter 3 Part 3

With that, Elria and Reid were kicked out of the workshop.

And so――they were standing absentmindedly in the tourist area.

"Reid."

"What is it, Elria?"

"I think we should sort out our current situation to resolve it."

"That makes sense. Constructive thinking is important."

"First of all, we were asked to go buy tea from Millis."

Elria showed a note that Millis handed over to her. There were several well-known brands of tea listed on it.

"We both know the brands of tea, so there's no problem in purchasing them."

"Right. I also know where the store is because I've seen it while walking around the royal capital."

"But clearly, we'll have extra time even if we purchase them."

Even if they visited the store Reid mentioned and factored in uncertainties, it would not take more than 30 minutes to purchase the tea leaves and return to the workshop.

"The current time is 1300 hours, but Millis said we shouldn't return until the evening, specifically not before 1700 hours."

"Why are you using the old military time reading from a thousand years ago?"

"I just felt like it."

Because Millis was very forceful, it reminded Elria of receiving a mission from a superior officer in her previous life. It was that intense. However, there were some unclear points about this mission.

"Millis gave us the instruction to 'spend the time doing something date-like'. So, I decided that we should clarify the conditions first."

"That's true. We have to clearly define what 'date-like' actions are."

"Yes. Have you ever been on a date, Reid?"

"I have no experience at all."

"Me neither."

………

……………

…………………

"What should we do?"

"What should we do indeed."

Both ended up staring up at the sky, not knowing what to do. Of course, they had some knowledge about ‘going on a date’.

It was something that a couple in love would go out and spend time doing. But that was about all they knew.

"Ahh... I do remember my subordinates talking about various things, but since I had nothing to do with it, I just ignored it..."

"I felt the same way..."

After all, they were famous as the ‘Hero’ and ‘Sage’ a thousand years ago.

They were busy every day because of that, often going to battlefields. On their days off, Elria's memories mostly involved researching magic alone.

As for Elria, back then, she had feelings for Reid, which meant she absolutely had no thoughts of falling in love with other Elves or humans.

"Also, Millis called it a 'shopping date'. The fact that she specified it probably means it's different from a regular date."

"Well, if we think about it, it likely just means going shopping while on a date... Is there anything in particular you want to buy?"

"Nothing in particular."

"Same here, I've already prepared everything I need, so I don't need to buy anything."

………

……………

"We... can't complete this mission...!!"

"It's not even a 'mission' to begin with."

As Reid was grinning wryly, he seemed to remember something.

"By the way, when I was in the village and went to the town’s market district, my little sister would say, 'It's fun just to look even if we don't buy anything', and she would gaze at various things and beg for food from the stalls."

"...You have a little sister, Reid?"

"Yeah. She's three years younger than me, about the same age as Elria. I also have an older brother who's three years older. Both of them had a higher aptitude for magic power than me, so they left the village to attend a different magic academy."

"Mm... In that case, we might meet them during the comprehensive exam."

"Oh, that's true. They have been too busy to return to the village according to their letters, so they probably don't know that I have entered the magic academy. It would be a surprise if we ran into each other during the exam."

Imagining the surprised faces of his siblings, Reid broke into a happy smile.

Seeing Reid's reaction, Elria couldn't help but smile as well. Reid nodded, looking seemingly satisfied.

"Well, anyway, how about we just walk around and look at things? We could treat it as a late lunch, grab some food to eat while walking, and maybe pick up some snacks for Wiesel and the others."

"Mm... I've never walked around while eating, so I'm looking forward to it."

"Then it's settled. I don't know if it will feel like a date, but we can just walk around and observe other happy couples for reference."

"Okay, that fulfills Millis's instructions――"

Just as Elria was about to nod, she noticed a man and a woman walking by.

From the way they were talking, they seemed to be in a romantic relationship.

And――while walking side by side, their hands were affectionately intertwined.

Seeing this, Elria looked at her own hand, which was lightly grasping Reid's sleeve.

After hesitating for a moment, Elria nodded greatly and――

"――――Mm."

――closed her eyes tightly, and held out her hand to Reid.

"......What's the matter?"

"H-Hand, hand, I want to h-hold――hold hands!!"

"Calm down, you're breaking your language function."

Seeing Elria's red ears, Reid lightly patted her on the head to calm her down.

"Holding hands at this point isn't a big deal. I've hugged you while you were lethargic, dressed you, and even bathed you while I was blindfolded."

"T-That's a separate issue…!"

Indeed, for Elria, it was a separate issue. She did not remember doing those things with Reid because she was in a lethargic state at those times.

And although Reid had led her by the hand before, it was safe to say that this was the first time she had held his hand of her own accord.

"T-That’s why... please!"

"...Well, if you're okay with it, then I don't mind."

As soon as Reid took the offered hand――

Something seemed to 'pop' inside Elria.

"――――T-Timeout!"

"Y-Yeah, I thought you were gonna faint."

Releasing Reid's hand, Elria took deep breaths to calm herself down. Not only was her face hot, her heart was also pounding like a drum.

"That was a high-level battle...!"

"Holding my hand was a battle?"

"I felt something close to that...!"

She was even more drained than she would have been after a battle.

Being aware of holding hands made her so embarrassed that she could not even think about walking hand-in-hand.

Seeing Elria's condition, Reid pondered while stroking his chin.

"But you're okay with grabbing my sleeve, huh?"

"Y-Yes... because it's not direct contact..."

"Then, can you bring out that magical beast from before?"

"......Shehri?"

"Yeah. Let's give it a walk while we're at it."

"O-Okay…"

Urged by Reid, Elria focused a little and cast her spell.

Then――at her feet, a miniaturized Shehri appeared and let out a small bark.

It was equipped with a collar and leash, ready for a walk.

"Err... I've summoned Shehri, but...?"

"Alright, then how about this?"

Reid stretched out his hand to grip the leash that Elria was holding.

Seeing this, Elria somewhat understood Reid's intention.

Both of them were holding onto one leash. Though their hands were not directly touching, it seemed as if they were connected.

"This is almost the same as holding hands, isn't it?" Reid said, smiling at Elria.

"There's no need for us to do the same thing as others. If you're nervous, you won't be able to enjoy yourself. In that case, it's best to adjust to what makes you comfortable," Reid said calmly, still smiling.

Reid had always taken care of her. He respected Elria's wish to 'hold hands' and came up with this method so that she wouldn't feel nervous. He had always been attuned to Elria's pace, never forcing her to face people she was shy around, and allowing her to hide behind him or hold onto his sleeve if that made her comfortable.

That was precisely why Elria also felt that she could try harder.

"If it seems too much, just let me know. It's also fine if you feel more at ease acting as you usually do."

"Mm... for now, I think it's fine."

Feeling slightly nervous, Elria clenched her fists lightly to encourage herself and then took a step forward.

Reid had given her this opportunity. So, from that point on, to be able to walk beside the person she loved, she resolved to try a little harder.

RHXS Vol. 2 Chapter 3 Part 2

Chapter 3 Part 2

The structure of the royal capital can be summed up in one word: hierarchical.

Centered around the royal castle towering on a small mountain peak, the houses of distinguished families that had supported the country for generations line a significantly lower tier. Public institutions such as guard posts, government offices, banks, and hospitals were arranged in a  circle, separating them from the lower world.

And the area at the foot of the mountain was commonly called the ‘royal capital’.

Originally, Vegalta focused on trade with neighboring countries, and remnants of that still remain in the current royal capital, where various shop signs can be seen on the main street.

That was because many people visited the ‘royal capital’ itself.

With its artistic and historic streets, modern magic technology not seen in the countryside, and the latest popularized magic tools, Vegalta, being at the center of the continent and a transit point, gathered items from various places. Regular markets featuring these items were held, attracting tourists from the countryside and making the royal capital an important place for those engaged in commerce.

And so――

"――This is it! The promised metropolis, the royal capital of Vegalta!!"

In the heart of the royal capital, there was an excited country bumpkin.

Reid and the others were watching the country bumpkin from a distance.

"Millis, are you satisfied now?"

"…Eh, why is everyone else's excitement level so different from mine?"

"Well, everyone but you has lived in the royal capital. It's not like we'll get excited seeing it again."

Agreeing with Reid's words, the other three nodded.

Elria and Faregh, from distinguished families, had always looked down on the royal capital from above. Wiesel, having lived in the royal capital with its magic equipment workshop, found nothing novel there.

"B-But, Reid-san! You're from the countryside like me, right? When you see this magnificent royal capital, you get a little excited, right!?"

"Well, I thought it was amazing at first, but when I lived in the Caldwen mansion, I got used to seeing it all."

"Oh... so, you betrayed your countryside roots too, huh..."

Millis, disheartened, gave Reid a strangely dishonorable nickname. Her sulking figure was pitiable.

Watching Millis, Faregh snorted in boredom.

"In the first place, where we're going is the industrial area with workshops. It's not a place for country bumpkins looking to sightsee."

The royal capital essentially had its outer perimeter designated as a tourist area, and moving further inward from there would be the industrial park where magic equipment workshops and factories were located.

The industrial park was not intended for tourists, but primarily for merchants and craftsmen to visit for business discussions and procurement. It was not a place or thing to be viewed as a tourist attraction.

"If you want to sightsee like a country bumpkin, you can go to the tourist attractions by yourself."

"No, the industrial park is also a city to me. Because in the countryside, we don't have magic equipment workshops and factories."

"So, you're just happy with anything…?"

"Faregh-san wouldn't understand it... All I could see were grasslands and mountains, and the only things to look at were sheep and cows. For me, who came from a place where the biggest events in the village were the birth of livestock or an elderly person going missing and being found a few hours later, everything here is new and fascinating for me…!!"

"Yeah... okay, enjoy the royal capital as much as you want, you country bumpkin."

Pressed by Millis's enthusiasm, Faregh looked at her with a pitiful gaze. He probably decided it was risky to say anything more.

"Seriously… even though today is a day off, it's so noisy. And because there are a lot of  conspicuous people around, I feel bothered by the stares of passersby."

"I agree with Faregh. I don't like being stared at."

"...Don't say that when you're the one causing it, Caldwen."

As Faregh said, most people were looking at Elria.

Today, she was not in uniform but in casual clothes. However, due to her good looks, everyone turned around at least once. Those who noticed that she was Elria due to her silver hair, which was rare even in Vegalta, couldn't help but let out a gasp of admiration.

But, of course, it was the hiding behind Reid's back that made it more conspicuous.

Today as well, she firmly grasped Reid's sleeve and peeked out from behind him. However, Elria tilted her head in wonder.

"This is how it always is, so there shouldn’t be a problem, right?"

"Well, within the academy it's one thing, but if I let Elria walk alone outside, she might get lost. I'd feel more at ease if she clung to my sleeve."

"Yes. A lifeline is important."

"...Is she supposed to be the person who is from the same distinguished family as me, and is also seen as my superior?"

"Well, Faregh-san's character and actions are also flawed, so it's somewhat similar."

"You should show a bit more respect to me, you country bumpkin!!"

"......Am I as bad as Faregh?"

"Don't worry about it. You're just flawed in a slightly different way."

Seeing Elria shivering in shock, Reid comforted her by lightly patting her head. He felt guilty for not denying it.

Thus, the group of five made their way through the bustling royal capital, entering the industrial park.

As the crowd thinned out, the street's atmosphere changed from flamboyant to rugged and chaotic. More people dressed in work clothes and merchants appeared.

And so, their destination was――

"――This is the Blanche Workshop, my family's home."

Compared to others, it was a smaller, aged building.

"Isn't it quite small for the workshop of a famous magic equipment engineer…?"

"You can frankly call it run-down, Lady Millis."

"So, it's a run-down workshop."

"The inside isn't like that. Though not necessarily a tradition of the Blanche family, we invest most of our profits in developing new magic equipment and procuring materials, hence the exterior looks like this."

With a wry smile, Wiesel took out a key from his pocket, and entered the workshop.

Moving past the customer waiting room and opening the workshop door――

"――This is the workshop of the Blanche family, involved in magic equipment for generations."

Seeing the sight, Reid and the others could not help but let out a gasp of admiration.

A mountain of weaponry filled their view. It was not just typical weapons like swords and spears, but also armor like gauntlets and gaiters, and even musical instruments, farming tools, and fishing equipment.

"Amazing... Are these all magic equipment?"

"No, these are like molds used to create magic equipment."

Saying that, Wiesel casually lifted a large hammer nearby.

"We refer to these molds to calculate the necessary magic circuits based on the client's magic power system and their strengths in magic. We then select the shape and materials of the magic equipment that suit those magic. After deciding on the overall design, we determine the placement of the magic circuits and request a magic craftsman to engrave them."

"Heehh... I always thought magic equipment was more like wands or weapons, but seeing it now, there are so many shapes."

"If you're interested, feel free to look around. I've closed the workshop for the day, so we have it all to ourselves."

"Really!?"

"Yes. Lord Welminan and I have work to do."

Saying that, Wiesel rolled up his sleeves and headed to his workbench.

"Please hand me the magic equipment, Lord Welminan."

"Yeah… If you fail, I'll cry…!"

"Don't worry. I'll show you the skills of someone who bears the Blanche name."

Taking the magic equipment from Faregh, he narrowed his eyes and then――

"――――<<Output Composition>>."

The moment he waved his right hand, the magic equipment was enveloped in a faint light. Various symbols then began to appear on a crystal in his left hand.

"As I suspected. Frequently used magic formulas are fixed in place, and it's arranged to repel other types of magic. Are these the five most recently used spells?"

"Y-Yeah... Those are the recent magic formulas I have used."

"I see... Indeed, it has greatly changed from the spells you used before. While we might not need to change its shape, we might need to tweak the converter and stabilizer a bit."

While looking at the various symbols, Wiesel diagnosed.

The converter built into the magic equipment could transform the channeled magic power into another color system. While the output decreased, it could add versatility to the magic that was executed.

And in the case of magic that required stable outcomes such as support magic and healing magic, they had a role of keeping the output of the magic being exercised constantly by passing it through a stabilizer.

And... these were technologies that Reid was very familiar with.

"...They have adapted it quite well to magic, haven't they?"

"Yeah, they have done a great job."

"Isn't this technology looted from Altein?"

"It was found on the battlefield, so I restored the broken parts, analyzed them, and then applied them to magic."

Elria proudly showed off her accomplishment.

The mechanisms like converters and stabilizers were used in Altein's ‘machinery’ technology.

In Altein, they were incorporated into tools that used ‘electricity’, but perhaps during wartime, they dismantled the looted weapons, and Elria adapted and replaced them with magic power.

Even Reid, who actually dealt with them, could not fully understand the mechanism. However, with the actual item in question, she correctly understood the structure and its role and further refined it into her magic technology, truly deserving of being called ‘Sage’.

While immersed in such nostalgic feelings, Wiesel's expression slightly darkened.

"This might be... a bit difficult."

"I-It’s difficult?"

"I can tamper with the converters and stabilizers, but considering the operational time of magic, it's ideal to increase the magic power efficiency. However, in that case, we have to change the layout of the magic circuits."

"......So, why not just change it?"

"Changing the layout requires the removal of the existing magic circuit and drawing a new one. What we magic equipment engineers do is overall design and efficient creation of magic circuits. The engraving of magic circuits falls under the domain of magic craftsmen."

"So, you're saying you can't engrave the magic circuit?"

"I have some knowledge of the engraving itself. But the problem is that the magic power system of Lord Welminan and mine don't match."

After explaining, Wiesel took a breath and looked at Elria.

"If I remember correctly, Lady Elria can handle six types of magic power, right?"

"Mm, I can use them, but... I've never done magic circuit engraving, so it's difficult."

"...I see. The work area is narrow, but intricate work is required, so it's tough without experience."

"In that case, why not ask a magic craftsman you know?"

"I can make a request, but... the magic craftsman that Blanche requests often interacts with the upper class, and the fact that they engraved on Welminan's magic equipment is significant for a magic craftsman. So, there's a possibility they might accidentally spill the beans to the Welminan household."

"We absolutely need to avoid that!!"

"...Understood. As a magic equipment engineer, I don't want to hand over an incomplete item to the user, but considering your situation, I'll keep the modifications within the possible range――"

Just as the compromising Wiesel was about to get back to work, his shoulder was lightly tapped.

There stood――a smiling Millis.

"I've done magic circuit engraving before, you know?"

".........What did you say?"

"Back in the countryside, it takes time to call someone, so when a magic tool broke, I fixed it myself. And in the village, I had the nickname of 'Magic Tool Doctor'."

While speaking proudly with her thumb up, Wiesel paused for a moment to think and then nodded in agreement.

"Then, I'll prepare something suitable. As a test, please try copying and engraving the magic circuit that is engraved into the magic equipment. Feel free to use any tools for the engraving."

"Yes, yes. It's not much different from a magic tool, right?"

"It's not much different, but the magic circuit is more complex than a magic tool, and precise work is required. Even a small deviation will reduce magic power efficiency."

"Hmm, I see."

With that light tone, Millis moved her pen-like tool smoothly――

"Here, is this how it's done?"

".........What?"

"I copied it according to the original size since there was no specification, but this is okay, right?"

With that, Millis showed a metal plate to Wiesel.

A delicate pattern emerged due to the glow of magic power.

Taking it into his hands, Wiesel looked closely, adjusting his glasses multiple times.

"No way... there's not even a single error...!?"

"HA HA HA!! Welcome to my era!!"

With triumphant enthusiasm, Millis raised her arms high in the air, looking more joyous than ever before.

And with a smile, Millis turned her head to face Faregh.

"Hehe... Faregh-san, do you want me to do the magic circuit engraving?"

"Kugh... What do you want in return…!?"

"That sounds pretty rude, doesn't it? I don't really have anything I want right now, but how about keeping it as a ‘favor’ for the future?"

"That's even scarier since I don't know what you'll ask for!!"

"HA HA HA! I hope you live in fear of me from now on!!"

With that, Millis, full of vitality, stood on a chair, looking down at Faregh. She seemed to be having a blast.

As Faregh looked frustrated, Wiesel adjusted his glasses and put his hand on his shoulder.

"...Lord Welminan, I think you should owe Millis a favor."

"You want me to owe this unpredictable country bumpkin a favor? Are you out of your mind!?"

"However, the ability to engrave a magic circuit so accurately is rare, even among magic craftsmen. From my perspective as a magic equipment engineer, such skill is practical. I'd even go so far as to say I don't understand why Millis didn't pursue a career as a magic craftsman instead of becoming a mage."

"Well, I thought being a mage seemed more urban and cool!!"

"You're leaving this to someone who says such stupid things!?"

"I'll handle the instructions and drafting, so there shouldn't be any issues with the work itself. And with such skills, we should be able to incorporate even the ideas I had given up on and deliver the best work...!!"

Perhaps overwhelmed by the joy of being able to do his best work as a magic equipment engineer, Wiesel, with a maniacal smile, firmly grabbed both of Faregh's shoulders.

"I will definitely craft the best magic equipment...! So, close your eyes to any future worries and let Lady Millis handle the work...!!"

"Eeek!? I-I get it!! Just do whatever you need to do!!"

Pressed by Wiesel's intensity, Faregh turned pale and nodded repeatedly.

The moment they got Faregh's word, Wiesel and Millis silently exchanged a high-five. The two seemed oddly in sync.

"Now, I will draw up the blueprint for the new magic circuit. Lady Millis will engrave on it just like before, without a single discrepancy."

"Please leave it to me! By the way, I'm getting thirsty!!"

"Lord Welminan, go buy a drink for Lady Millis."

"Am I being forcefully made to owe her a favor, and on top of that, being turned into her errand boy!?"

"The words of a magic craftsman are absolute. Things will get busy afterward."

The three chatted and bustled about.

Watching the trio, Reid and Elria looked on calmly.

"They all seem to be having so much fun."

"That kind of thing feels like a privilege of young people."

"You're young too, Reid."

"I may look young, but inside, I'm an old man."

"To me, Reid will always be young."

"If you say that, then you're the one who remains a child, both inside and out."

As they exchanged casual remarks, Millis approached them.

"Hey, what's the matter, Millis?"

"Well... I felt a warm gaze, like the one elders from the village give."

"Stop beating around the bush and calling me old."

"By the way, I think it’s okay for the two of you to just walk around outside. It looks like Wiesel-san is very enthusiastic, and the work might take a while."

Looking at Wiesel, they saw him consulting with Faregh and sketching a magic equipment diagram on his desk.

"Since we have come all the way to the royal capital, why don’t you two go on a date together?"

" ".........Date?" "

"Could you two not react like you've never heard the word before...!?"

"No, of course, I've heard of it."

"I've heard of it, too."

"That's strange... I'm sure I used a very common word...!"

Seeing their reactions, Millis let out a tired sigh.

"Alright... I'll have to ask you two for a favor."

With that, Millis opened her eyes wide and――

"I'd like the two of you to go on a shopping date right now!"

So, with a pointed finger, she declared.

RHXS Vol. 2 Chapter 3 Part 1

Chapter 3 Part 1

A week after the incident with Rufus.

"――I want to play in the royal capital...!!"

Millis began saying something similar to what she had said before.

In response, Reid and the others continued eating without showing much concern.

"What now, another one of Millis's outbursts?"

"Millis is too infatuated with the royal capital."

"What!? I certainly dream about it! The stylish cobblestones without a blade of grass! Unlike the countryside, where there's wastefully too much land, the cityscape is built with calculated use of limited space! Stalls hanging with things other than just cheese and dried meat!! I want to experience all of it!!"

Millis passionately spoke of her desire for the royal capital.

She had mentioned wanting to visit the royal capital several times before, but this time, her enthusiasm seemed to be even stronger.

In response to Millis's words, there was a new reaction this time.

"――Hah, it's enviable that country bumpkins can get excited over such things."

That was what Faregh replied with dripping sarcasm.

――While face down on the table, his body shivered.

"Even in this state, Faregh-san can be sarcastic. That's impressive in its own way."

"Quiet...! Even if I wanted to move, I can't...!!"

Faregh, gritting his teeth, remained motionless.

However, seeing Faregh like this, Reid nodded in satisfaction.

"At least you're energetic enough to be sarcastic. When we started, you'd burn out and collapse after every training session."

"Why make me do it until I collapse in the first place!? Lately, after training, I don't remember anything till the next morning. It's terrifying!!"

"After you collapsed, I carried you back to the academy, forcefully fed you in the dining hall, threw you into a room, then called Valk and Lucas to take care of you. You were fine."

"Oh, that's why when I woke up, my clothes had changed and I was already bathed――no, wait a minute, what do you mean by 'forcefully fed'?"

"I chose a nutritious meal from the dining hall, then stuffed it all in a borrowed magic grinder and liquefied it before pouring it into your stomach."

"What have you been pouring into me without my knowledge!?"

Faregh was lively in his protests, but he was so tired that he could not even pound the table.

Watching the two of them, Wiesel tilted his head slightly.

"Speaking of which, we've been acting separately, but what exactly have you been doing?"

"I'm teaching him 'swordsmanship', a close-quarters combat technique. But it's not exactly the same, so I'm also training him in magic that assists with that."

For the past week, Reid had been teaching Faregh 'swordsmanship'.

To be precise, it was not based on any ancient style from a thousand years ago, but rather ‘sword techniques’ that incorporated the knowledge and movements that Reid had learned in battle.

In essence, it was a self-taught swordsmanship, and were ways of fighting that cannot be handled without Reid's physical abilities, so at that time, it was not something that anyone other than Reid could handle.

However, by incorporating magic for body strengthening and other support magic, one could imitate Reid's fighting style. Fortunately, Faregh was adept in this area.

When Reid introduced magic that suited his envisioned movements, Faregh could quickly integrate and use it, making the training progress faster than anticipated. But there was one problem――

"As I said! When I try to reproduce your movements, my magic power doesn't balance out!! Even now, it’s supposed to consume less magic power than offensive magic, but I would run out of magic power midway, you know!?"

"Just work harder."

"You can't just dismiss it with that!!"

"Well, aside from knowledge of magic, things like magic power consumption are beyond my expertise..."

In the case of Reid, it was purely physical and endurance-based, rather than relying on magic power. However, when Faregh practiced, the consumption of magic power also came into play.

But since Reid himself had never used magic, he could not offer any advice on how to sense or manage the consumption of magic power.

"I wonder if Elria might have some advice?"

"Mm... I think I might, but I don't think I have much to offer. The Welminan family should have taught him magic power management methods with a focus on magic combat since childhood."

"Of course. Besides, managing magic power is something one learns by personal intuition. Even the Caldwens couldn't teach it."

Faregh added, and Elria nodded in agreement.

At that moment, Wiesel, who had been deep in thought, looked up.

"Lord Welminan, may I inspect your magic equipment?"

"W-What do you intend to do with my magic equipment...!?"

"...I am a magic equipment engineer from the Blanche family. Unlike Reid, I won't break it."

"I-I see... If you're a magic equipment engineer from Blanche, then it's alright!"

Remembering the trauma of having his magic equipment broken by Reid, Faregh hesitated for a moment but handed over a small sword-shaped magic equipment to Wiesel.

Holding the small sword, Wiesel scrutinized the magic equipment.

"It was made... in the Estoginia workshop, right? It's been whittled down due to the break, but it's been modified as close to its original function as possible. The magic equipment engineer did a good job."

"Of course! Not only has the Welminan family had its magic equipment made by Estoginia for generations, but we also employ the most skilled magic equipment engineer in the workshop!!"

"I see. However, this clarifies the problem."

After saying this, Wiesel adjusted his glasses.

"It seems like the magic circuit was adjusted to compensate for the break, and it consumes more magic power than expected when using any magic other than the pre-installed ones."

"......Is that so?"

"Previous Lords of Welminan primarily used long-range, high-powered magic, so they must've created a system that references the use of such a magic circuit and conserves magic power for the most frequently used spells. It's a good technique, but not suitable if you want to change roles."

"Ugh... So, I have to make another request for adjustments..."

"Is there a problem?"

"Well... when this magic equipment was repaired last time, my father scolded me, saying 'How could a mage break his magic equipment?' I'm worried about what he'll say if I request another repair...!"

"What's the matter? You're the young master of a distinguished family, so just keep the economy running."

"The one who broke it saying that pisses me off the most!!"

Perhaps anger trumped exhaustion, Faregh pounded on the table in protest. It was good to see him so energized.

At that moment, Wiesel seemed to ponder and spoke,

"If Lord Welminan doesn't mind, I can modify the magic equipment."

"Really!?"

"Yes. I have a good relationship with the people of Estoginia and have received magic equipment from them a few times in exchange for technology. I should be able to modify it if I check those magic equipment during the process."

"If you can, please do! I don't want to be scolded by my father again!!"

"I understand. It's a rare opportunity for me to see the Welminan family’s magic equipment, and for my own future learning, I don't need any payment."

"Thank you... Thank you, magic equipment engineer of Blanche…!!"

With tears streaming down, Faregh took Wiesel's hands as if in prayer. He must have been deeply affected by the previous scolding.

As the conversation wrapped up, Millis raised her head, seeming to have realized something.

"Wiesel-san, you're going to do this work at your family's workshop, right?"

"Yes. As before, I plan to work at the workshop on my day off."

"That means you will accompany him, Faregh-san?"

"Of course. He will need to adjust it according to new spells and movements, so I'll need to use it myself for fine-tuning."

"In other words, if Reid-san is in a situation where there is no one to teach, and Wiesel-san is absent during training, it would increase the workload for Elria-sama, who is on the instructing side――"

""On our day off, Millis and I will have a mock battle and beat each other up.""

"Don't team up to gang up on me!!"

After reprimanding them, Millis decisively pointed out――

"――On our day off, let's all go to the royal capital!!"

As if she had received a divine revelation, Millis declared with glee.

RHXS Vol. 2 Chapter 2 Part 5

Chapter 2 Part 5

After Rufus had left, Reid and Elria questioned Philia about her circumstances.

Rufus was not only the daughter of the tribal chief governing the Seven Islands of Serios, but she had also formed a pact with the 'Guardian Dragons', placing her at the center of immense expectations. To say that these expectations were a matter of national pride would not be an exaggeration.

Serios and Vegalta shared a long history and had established friendly ties. Precisely because of this history, Serios took immense pride in their summoning magic. The distinct magical languages enabling conversation with magical beasts, specialized ecosystems facilitating their coexistence, and a magical beast-taming technique, which was arguably the root of summoning magic, were all significant cultural and technological features of Serios.

However, their focus on these unique aspects meant other areas of magical advancement had been slower. Their use of magic tools paled in comparison to Vegalta, who had diversified their technology of magic.

Given this backdrop, the weight of expectation on Rufus was significant. If she could prove her capabilities in the summoning magic her country had prided itself on and outshine Vegalta's magic, it would affirm her country's standing as equal to Vegalta.

But that was a heavy burden for a young girl. Furthermore, Rufus's determination and the intensity in her eyes revealed more than just the weight of these expectations.

Lost in thought in her room――

"――What's got you more spaced out than usual?" Reid asked, holding a teacup filled with milk tea.

"Mm... I was just thinking about Rufus."

"The <<Dragon Princess>>, huh? She did seem rather precarious, even to me."

"You felt it too, Reid?"

"Yeah. I caught a glimpse of the mock battle. She seemed more obsessed with winning than the actual battle. There was a hint of desperation in her moves, as if there was no room for mistakes," Reid mused, rubbing his chin.

"I get the national pride part. But if victory was her sole aim, she could've summoned her ‘Guardian Dragons’ as leverage. She must've known about you, just as we knew of her from Vegalta," Reid continued.

"...Do you think youthful arrogance played a part?"

"If that were the case, she would've flaunted her ‘Guardian Dragons’ from the beginning. And would someone that arrogant appear so troubled?" Reid spoke with a grim expression.

Rufus looked almost tearful, her visage strained and desperate. Seeing that face was what made Elria restrain her anger.

"Seriously... it reminds me of the old times."

"...The old times?"

"Yeah. In Altein, it was common for children to become soldiers. They understood that this would reduce the number of mouths to feed. Their eyes held the same desperation, willing to do anything for survival. Rufus's eyes mirrored theirs."

"So, you're suggesting Rufus is undergoing something similar?"

"Who knows. Times have changed, and only she would know her reasons," Reid sighed heavily, a hint of frustration in his eyes.

"It's just that... she probably came to this academy carrying that heavy burden and resolve," Reid continued, gazing into the void.

Elria realized just how perceptive Reid was about people.

He had an uncanny ability to see right through to a person's core. His astute observations had never missed even the smallest of details. As a result, while fulfilling the role demanded of a ‘Hero’, he also led many as a country’s general, gaining deep trust from those he commanded. That was something Elria had been slightly envious of.

Elria admired him for this. While she excelled in disseminating the technology of magic, she often secluded herself in her research. It was only much later she understood that her admiration had evolved into romantic feelings.

"Speaking of which, Elria."

"Hyaa!?"

"It's been a while since I've heard that squeal of surprise from you."

"I-It's just that you caught me off guard by suddenly calling my name…!"

"I've been addressing you by your name as I always do, haven't I?"

Choosing to ignore Reid's puzzled look, Elria vigorously shook her head, attempting to dissipate her blushing face.

"S-So, what did you want to say…?"

"I'm rather curious about that little one," Reid said, directing his gaze to Elria's lap.

There, a small, pure-white puppy was playfully rolling about. And as Reid observed, it wiggled its tiny legs, revealing its soft white belly. Noticing Reid's attention, the puppy let out a small whimper.

"Is that the magical beast you've summoned?"

"Yes. It's worked hard for me, and I've put it through quite a lot."

Elria brought her fingertip closer to the puppy, and it playfully nibbled on it.

The last attack had significantly drained Shehri's ‘soul’. Though ‘drained’ might sound severe, it essentially means the creature had undergone a painful experience and felt discomfort.

As an act of apology, Elria allowed it to take some of her magic power.

If it was left unattended, the magical beast might sever the contract.

"Because a magical beast's body is composed of magic power, making it small like this is more efficient."

"It's so small that it hardly seems majestic..."

Holding Shehri's paw, Elria stretched it out for Reid to see.

While it retained traces of its original wolf-like appearance, it resembled more of a dog in this reduced size.

"Do you want to pet it, Reid?"

"...Can I? If it detonates because of my magic power, I might be so traumatized that I'd be bedridden for days."

"It's okay. While a magical beast's body is formed from magic power, it turns into matter resembling a real creature. Touching it should feel like touching any ordinary dog."

"I-In that case, I might try..."

Reid hesitated before slowly extending his hand.

When he felt its soft belly, Shehri wiggled as if tickled.

"I haven't petted a dog in a while..."

"Do you like dogs, Reid?"

"I've always been fond of animals, be it dogs or cats. But they often avoid me or flee when I approach them, making it challenging for me to touch them."

With his guard dropped, and smiling in a way that was unlike him, Reid continued to pet Shehri's belly.

"Mm... Then, do you want to try holding it?"

"Would that be alright?"

"Yes, it's safe. I've blunted its fangs and claws for now."

Elria presented Shehri to Reid. The magical beast wagged its tail energetically while sticking out its tongue. But just as Reid was about to embrace Shehri――it lunged and playfully bit Reid's face.

"....................."

Stunned, Reid didn't react.

After a moment, Shehri yipped, seemingly unimpressed by the taste, and returned to Elria's embrace.

"It... might be grouchy after the mock battle."

"Right... I wouldn’t appreciate unfamiliar hands if I felt that way…"

Reid looked crestfallen.

On second thought, the <<Mana-Eater Wolf>> was a magical beast sensitive to magic power. Perhaps it avoided Reid due to his unfamiliar magic power.

"...Maybe animals avoid you because of your magic power, Reid."

"Could that be the case!?"

"Y-Yes... animals, with their keen senses, can detect magic power through their sense of smell or hearing, and that's how they gauge the presence of others..."

Reid's eyes flared with realization, but then he sighed deeply, looking even more dejected.

"Well… I suspected as much... Like, when I was camping, the wild dogs fled upon seeing me, or a bear abandoning its den when I sought shelter. Even magical beasts steer clear when I’m around…!!"

"You lead quite the adventurous life."

"Haa... If it's because of my magic power, there's little I can do…"

Reid slumped on the floor, visibly upset.

What should she do?

This wasn't a problem Reid could easily overcome. And though Shehri might stay put if Elria asked, Reid could be hurt more if he sensed the creature's reluctance.

It pained her that he loved animals yet couldn't interact with them.

Desperate for a solution, Elria delved deep into her thoughts. After all, she was once revered as the ‘Sage’.

Just as she had once revolutionized the world with the technology of magic, she believed she could devise the best solution now.

……………

…………………

"!"

Upon contemplation, an idea struck her.

Gently placing Shehri on the sofa, she quickly cast a spell and then lightly tapped the dejected Reid on the shoulder.

"Reid, Reid."

"What’s the matter…? I've pretty much given up, so if you have comforting words――"

But when Reid glanced up, he froze.

Before him stood Elria, now adorned with white cat ears. Tastefully, she had also sprouted a tail, which she wagged gracefully.

"If you can't pet animals, then you can pet me."

With confidence radiating from her face, Elria made her declaration.

Without any hesitation, she proudly showcased her fluttering cat ears and wagging tail.

Upon witnessing this, Reid turned away, struggling to contain his laughter.

"You… Your solution is rather... bold, isn't it?"

"W-Why are you laughing...!?"

"Well… it's just so like you to come up with the idea of growing cat ears and a tail, and to then present it with such unabashed confidence…!!"

Reid struggled to stifle his laughter.

Somehow, this was not the reaction Elria had expected. She'd imagined Reid gratefully stroking her head. Disappointed, she puffed out her cheeks.

"......So, are you not going to pet me?"

"I will, I will. You've always had a cat-like quality, so this look suits you perfectly."

Chuckling, Reid tenderly stroked Elria's head.

Getting the petting she had hoped for, Elria playfully moved her ears.

"So, what should I do now?"

"...Given that I'm now a cat, perhaps I should sit on your lap?"

"Sounds good."

Reid sat down on the sofa, and Elria promptly positioned herself on his lap. She adjusted slightly to find the most comfortable spot, then nodded in contentment.

"It feels comfortable."

"Thank you for that."

"Can Shehri join us?"

"Of course. You're light, and there's space for a dog or even more."

"In that case, come here, Shehri."

At Elria's beckoning, Shehri barked softly and joined them on the lap.

"But you know... from the outside, it probably looks kind of stifling..."

"On the contrary, you could say it's cozy. It's twice as cozy with both Shehri and me."

While she nestled into Reid, Elria playfully raised Shehri for him to see.

"You can continue petting me until you've had enough."

"Alright, alright. Thank you."

With a wry smile, Reid gently stroked Elria's head. His big hand felt strangely nostalgic. It resembled the hand of her father, who always gently caressed her.

Elria last saw her father when she was heading to the royal capital. Even then… with his usual gentle smile, her father had lovingly stroked her head.

Remembering such a nostalgic image of her father, Elria softly wagged her tail.

RHXS Vol. 2 Chapter 2 Part 4

Chapter 2 Part 4

Distant sounds of battle had reached their ears. Listening intently to the sounds, Elria nodded slightly.

"Reid seems to be having fun."

"Um... I can clearly hear some explosive and dangerous-sounding noises, though…?"

"It's surprising that Reid would willingly take on Lord Welminan."

"True, he was the one most at odds with Faregh-san."

"Mm... I think people tend to care more for the troublesome ones."

Recalling the image of Reid holding a sword and smiling happily, Elria had spoken.

"In his previous life, Reid couldn't teach anyone his techniques."

"Is that because Reid-san was unreasonably strong?"

"Yes. I think he taught broader concepts like tactics and strategy, command, and reporting――things beyond combat. But no one could learn how Reid himself 'fights'."

Although once called a 'Hero', Reid's feats had been due to his robust physique, making it impossible to pass on his techniques to others. However, nowadays, the world has been filled with 'Magic'.

While they couldn't reproduce that 'power' itself, with body strengthening magic and magic equipment, it should have been possible to recreate at least the 'movement'.

"I think Reid sees potential in Faregh."

said Elria with a slight smile.

"Also, he's cheeky, so Reid probably wants to straighten him out."

"That sounds more like Reid-san."

"My magic equipment probably won't escape unscathed, either…"

With that, the three nodded in the direction where the explosions were heard.

In any case, Elria was also responsible for the two of them. It wasn't just for her own examination, but also because she wanted to teach them as much as possible for their future as mages.

"So, let's confirm your roles again."

"Yes! I'm in charge of defense, battle support through barriers, and guarding bases!"

"As for me, I'll use magic equipment for reconnaissance and information gathering. Based on that information, I'll take command, assess the situation, and participate in the front lines as needed."

Listening to their answers, Elria nodded approvingly.

In contrast to her usual demeanor, Millis had shown an exceedingly high magic power during the magic power measurement check and had been invited as a scholarship student by the academy.

Having a lot of magic power was simply advantageous. It had allowed her to create stronger offensive magic or protection magic that could block numerous attacks. And it was not only about the amount of magic power, but also the fact that she could handle four different magic power systems.

While using multiple magic power systems had given her an edge in battle, effectively utilizing them required experience and judgment. Still, as a support role, she had been able to adapt easily, using a broad range of magic to handle various situations. And while Millis had rejected the idea, pre-prepared defenses would have given her room to think and make better decisions.

Wiesel could handle two types of magic power systems and had an average amount of magic power. But because he could prepare multiple magic equipment himself, he could perform a wider range of roles than an average mage.

Mages who were skilled in reconnaissance and information gathering had been rare and hence a significant asset in conditional examinations, which were conducted in various situations, and in comprehensive examinations, where the main focus had been on interpersonal combat.

Facing the two of them, after pondering the most effective form of teaching, Elria had concluded――

"Let’s have a mock battle."

"Ahh... This is the worst part about Elria-sama...!"

"Why are both Reid and Lady Elria so eager for combat...?"

Elria was enthusiastic, but the two looked up to the sky with looks of despair.

This was not their first mock battle with Elria. Having grown accustomed to Alma's training and found some room to breathe, they had conducted several mock battles during their free time, under Elria's proposal that "real battle teaches you more".

Of course, Elria had been using magic restrictions to a significant extent――

"Come to think of it, ever since our mock battles with Lady Elria, the training has felt lax..."

"Yeah... Compared to being tossed around nearly a hundred times without magic..."

The primary focus of their training in the mock battles was on 'body utilization'.

If they could move their bodies efficiently, the magic power consumed for body strengthening would decrease, which would improve the efficiency of magic usage, quicker movements, and intuitive actions in close-quarters combat.

That was why Elria had been utterly merciless. She had been freely tossing them into the air and slamming them to the ground, using pure martial arts techniques whenever they showed an opening.

"But if it hurts, you'll never forget, and you'll learn faster. It's the most effective and strongest method of learning."

"Your words sound nothing like the wisdom of a sage. It's muscle-brained learning at its best...!"

"Just recalling it brings the taste of blood into my mouth..."

"In my time, there was a saying, 'You're not a full-fledged adult until you spit blood during training'."

Before their pale faces, Elria nodded, as if it was only natural.

After all, failing to train as if their lives depended on it during that wartime period could have actually cost them their lives.

To quickly cultivate mages capable of opposing Altein, Elria had them undergo severe training herself. For some reason, only Tiana seemed to be enjoying it.

Once called a ‘Sage’, the core of Elria's philosophy was militaristic.

"Don't worry, both of you are getting better. You should be fine with half as much this time."

"So, we'll be tossed around fifty times, then."

"Should we stock up on some poultices before dinner...?"

Just as they were mentally preparing themselves――a large, dark shadow spread over Elria and the others. The moment she saw it, Elria reflexively looked up. There, a massive shadow loomed in the cloudless blue sky. It was――a jet-black dragon with massive wings which soared through the sky.

Elria recognized that dragon.

"――Eh? Where is everyone from my class?"

A red-haired girl peeked out from the back of the dragon with those words. Then, the dragon landed with the earth quaking, and the girl hopped down onto the ground.

"Hey, hey! Which tower's class do you all belong to?"

"Um, we are from the East Tower class, I believe."

"Ehhh? That's the complete opposite of the West Tower class! Rafika said it was definitely this way, so I trusted her!!"

Saying that, the girl patted the black dragon's leg, and the black dragon let out a groan, lowering its head apologetically. It seemed that ‘Rafika’ was the name of the black dragon.

As she patted the black dragon, the girl suddenly turned her gaze to Elria.

"Ah! It's the person who took the same examination as me!"

"What, do you know her?"

"I-I know her, but… we're not acquainted."

Hiding behind Millis’s back, Elria answered.

She was――Rufus Rylus, the <<Dragon Princess>> of the Serios Federation. The girl who was described by Philia when Elria took the entrance examination with Reid.

Elria had never seen her up close because she was riding a black dragon during the examination, but she looked to be around 12 or 13 years old, not just young but also smaller than Millis.

"Hey, hey. Why is she hiding?"

"Ah, she has a habit of hiding when she sees people she doesn't know."

"Heehh! She's like an animal!"

With her light red eyes sparkling, Rufus started circling around Elria, appearing very interested, which made Elria feel troubled.

"Could it be, are you Elria Caldwen!?"

"Y-Yes... I'm Elria..."

"That's why you could cast such powerful magic! I'd heard there was someone in Vegalta who was so strong that they were called 'the Reincarnation of the Sage' in Vegalta. So, I was looking forward to meeting you!"

"T-Thank you...?"

"Yep, yep!"

Rufus showed a big smile, grabbing Elria's hand and shaking it enthusiastically. She seemed to be a very friendly girl, and not a bad one at that.

"But you know, I'm just as strong!"

"Right. I've heard you've contracted with the 'Guardian Dragons' of Serios, and I genuinely thought that was amazing."

Serios Federation was a composite country made up of seven islands to the west.

Although the land was home to numerous magical beasts due to the abundant nature and overflowing magic power, they also possessed a unique language that enabled communication with these magical beasts. After the widespread adoption of magic, the country realized a symbiotic relationship with the magical beasts through specialized summoning magic.

Among them――the four types of dragons called 'Guardian Dragons' symbolized the nature of Serios, referring to the dragon species that stood at the pinnacle of numerous magical beasts.

The <<Sky Dragon>> ruled the sky from its stronghold atop steep mountain peaks; the <<Sea Dragon>> governed the seas from the dark depths; the <<Fire Dragon>> claimed volcanic regions as its territory; and the <<Mountain Dragon>> lived in symbiosis with the abundant nature and beasts on the surface.

Through the dominance of these four dragons over the surrounding magical beasts, they maintained the natural order and balance, enabling a symbiotic relationship between the humans living in the Serios Federation and the magical beasts.

The 'Guardian Dragons' were a species that stood apart from other magical beasts to such an extent that even as young dragons, they could overpower other magical beasts. By the time they became adult dragons, they gained intelligence equal to or surpassing that of humans.

For this reason, it was nearly impossible for humans to command the 'Guardian Dragons'. This was because the 'Guardian Dragons' considered humans to be inferior beings, just like the other magical beasts.

Summoning magic involved negotiating with magical beasts to be recognized as 'equal beings', after which a contract was made. The soul of the contracted magical beast was then bound to a vessel created through magic power, enabling a sort of pseudo-summoning.

In the past, much older than the previous lives of Elria and Reid, dating back to an era of war, there had been records stating that some 'Guardian Dragons' had entered into contracts with humans to protect the Seven Islands of Serios. However, there had never been a single person who managed to form contracts with all four 'Guardian Dragons'.

"I've read about 'Guardian Dragons' in books but never seen one."

"Is that so?"

"Yes. But I heard they're commonly seen in Serios."

"Yep! They fly and hop around freely!"

"That must be enjoyable to watch."

"It's really fun! Etankyles naps on the clouds, Marefikams floats with only its head sticking out of the sea, Flamavaits races while gliding on lava, and Magnifimos sunbathes in the forests and plains!"

"Everyone seems more laid-back than I thought."

Excited that someone had taken an interest in her homeland, Rufus had eagerly talked about the usual behavior of the 'Guardian Dragons'. The names Rufus mentioned were the scientific names given to the 'Guardian Dragons' by the people of Serios.

The fact that she could easily name them showed that, despite being young, she had carefully studied and gained a deep knowledge of magical beasts.

"But…! My absolute favorite is this one!"

Saying this, Rufus pointed to the black dragon standing behind her with a big smile.

"That is... a flying steel dragon, right?"

"You know about it!?"

"Yes. I don't know their scientific name, though."

"It's Volaresferum, a large dragon species of the flying steel dragon genus!"

"You're quick to answer."

"But you're amazing too, Elria-chan! Flying steel dragons have become rare over time!"

"......I happened to read it in a book."

Confronted by Rufus's dazzling eyes, Elria looked away slightly.

What Elria had known was that the flying steel dragon had been a magical beast commonly seen a thousand years ago. At that time, they were treated as Serios's dragon mounts, possessing scales as strong as or stronger than steel due to their unique internal organs, which maintained a robust physique and stamina.

They had great flying capabilities and were proficient in attack methods like fireballs and fire breath. However, their numbers had decreased due to military use back then, making them rare today.

"Rafika has been my friend since childhood! So, for me, Rafika is more important than anyone else!"

As Rufus proudly introduced her friend, the black dragon lowered its head toward Elria as if to bow. It was very well-mannered.

"Hey, hey! What other magic can you use, Elria-chan?"

"Mm... I can also use summoning magic, but..."

As she answered, Elria glanced toward Millis and Wiesel.

After all, she was in the position to teach the two.

Though talking with Rufus had been intriguing, considering her role and duty to teach the two, she needed to wrap up the conversation here. That was what Elria thought, but――

"Ah, it's okay to forget about the mock battle with us and continue the conversation."

"Just watching the two of you talk and use magic is educational for us. Please don't worry about it."

The two looked relieved, as if they had been saved. It made Elria a bit sad to think that they were that reluctant to have a mock battle.

"Elria-chan, were you about to do a mock battle?"

"Yes, I was planning to toss these two around a lot."

"Then let's have a mock battle with me!"

"......With you?"

"Yep! I want to see your magic, too!"

Saying this, Rufus energetically hopped onto the back of the black dragon.

"And besides――Rafika and I won't lose to anyone."

Saying so, a smile had spread across her lips.

Feeling something in that smile, Elria responded――

"――Alright. I understand."

She had deployed her magic equipment, brandished her staff, and driven it into the ground.

"Watching you two makes me want to fight alongside a friend for the first time in a while."

Forming an image with her magic power, she gripped the staff firmly.

The moment she pulled out the staff, a ‘chain’ was raised from the stone base. A heavy metallic sound rang out as an entity connected to that ‘chain’ emerged from the abyss.

"Come forth――Shehri."

What had appeared was――a giant wolf with pure white fur.

The giant wolf, adorned in a golden mask and armor, was pulled up to the surface by the ‘chain’. Immediately after, its fearsome fangs had aimed to bite Elria. However, as if she foresaw this, Elria used the ‘chain’ to bind its jaw.

Not only its mouth, but its whole body was tied up and its freedom snatched away. Despite this, the giant wolf tried to bite Elria, gnashing its teeth and clawing at the ground with its front paws. Observing this, Elria nodded in satisfaction.

"Yeah, Shehri is as lively as ever today."

"L-Lively? It looks like it's about to eat you at any moment, you know…!?"

"It's just a mischievous child. Want to pet it, Millis?"

"Sorry, I plan to die of old age in one piece…!!"

Watching the giant wolf gnash its teeth and drool, Millis quickly retreated while sweating bullets. It was a shame; the giant wolf would have enjoyed being petted. However, Rufus narrowed her eyes at the sight of the giant wolf.

"Heehh… A <<Mana-Eater Wolf>>, huh? Bold choice to make a contract with that one."

That was not just Rufus's opinion; anyone proficient in summoning magic would say the same.

A <<Mana-Eater Wolf>> was a magical beast that only inhabited Vegalta, known for its ferocity and territorial nature around areas where magic power flowed. And as the name suggested, it was a magical beast that feasted on magic power.

Its aggressive nature had not only targeted other magical beasts but also humans with abundant magic power. It was known to attack indiscriminately and had even been known to devour its own kind.

The aggression of this magical beast was also directed at the mages themselves, and there were anecdotes of them often not listening to commands due to their moody nature. Even Serios's mages, who could communicate with magical beasts, had given up trying to tame them.

However――

"That's because this child is really smart."

said Elria while petting the chained giant wolf.

"――This child understands that it will never be able to defeat me, no matter what."

Upon hearing this, Rufus smiled gleefully.

"Yep, this is going to be a lot of fun!!"

Saying so, Rufus mounted her black dragon, which then flapped its enormous wings.

Looking up at the black dragon soaring into the sky, Elria lightly swung her staff. And then, she released the ‘chain’ that had bound the giant wolf――

"――Go, Shehri."

She whispered, and the giant wolf turned its pointed snout toward the black dragon.

With a howl to the heavens, the wolf rushed toward its ‘enemy’. However, the black dragon was already rising into the sky.

No matter how massive the magical beast had been, it could not have reached that distance by leaping. That was why Rufus had chosen to fly in the first place. However, the giant wolf jumped toward the black dragon without a care. Kicking off an invisible foothold, it had risen rapidly into the air.

"Wha――!?"

Seeing the giant wolf gracefully leaping through the air, Rufus looked astonished. However, the surprise was not because a wingless beast was approaching. Even wingless magical beasts could engage in aerial combat through the use of magic barriers and footholds, and the role of summoners was to provide that support.

Though there were minor differences depending on the country, this method of combat had not changed much. Understanding this, Rufus had intended to gain an aerial advantage and had tried to destroy the footholds supporting the giant wolf. However, Elria had anticipated this line of thought.

If the enemy came close by forming barriers and footholds, destroying them in advance would prevent the flying enemy from approaching.

That was why Elria created an ‘invisible foothold’.

Unable to see it, Rufus could not order the black dragon to destroy it.

However――Shehri, the <<Mana-Eater Wolf>>, could see everything. With a keen sense for magic power, Shehri sensed the magic and hopped onto the invisible foothold the moment it was formed.

Even if Rufus tried to read the position where the foothold was formed, Shehri had already completed its movement by then.

Since Rufus, who was giving the instructions, was burdened with the disadvantage of 'not being able to visually confirm the foothold', she could not destroy the foothold faster than Shehri, who could see everything.

For this reason, Elria could predict Rufus's next move――

"Rafika!! Aim your fire breath at its surroundings!!"

The black dragon, which had been retreating from the approaching giant wolf, opened its jaws, and a brilliant light shone from within.

The large area-of-effect fire breath was fired by the flying steel dragon.

If the foothold were invisible, the strategy would be to target the area where it was likely to be. Regardless of the wolf's massive size, exposure to fire would have led to injuries and hampered its agility. Should it have dodged the flames, the destruction of the foothold would still have impaired its movement.

That was why――

"――Shehri, wait."

Upon hearing Elria's command, the giant wolf immediately lain low on the foothold.

The moment the fire breath incinerated the invisible foothold, an explosion resonated.

"――――!?"

The sudden blast caused the black dragon's massive body to lose balance.

What Elria had formed as an invisible foothold was compressed oxygen reinforced by magic. It had ignited due to the large area-of-effect fire breath, causing an explosion. Moreover, she calculated the explosion's direction to affect only the black dragon, not Shehri.

And so... due to the explosion, Rufus had completely lost sight of the giant wolf. The white smoke obscuring her vision and the blast affecting her balance worsened the situation.

By creating that situation――

"――Shehri, go ahead. It’s fine now."

The giant wolf, leaping out from the white smoke, had sunk its teeth into the black dragon's body.

The sound of grinding steel dragon scales echoed as they were crushed, and the black dragon let out a scream filled with agony.

"...Rafika! Calm down, Rafika!!"

Though Rufus called out, the dragon's thrashing worsened its balance, leading it to plummet uncontrollably.

Serios's mages often rode magical beasts. This allowed them to give detailed instructions in the magical beast language, enabling precise and swift evasion and defense. However, when hit, not just the magical beast but also the mage was severely affected.

Due to the explosion earlier, her sense of hearing and sight had been significantly impaired. She could not detect the approaching giant wolf or its presence. Now, with the black dragon running rampant, she could not give accurate instructions.

――With a thunderous impact, the black dragon had crashed into the ground.

Amidst the rising dust, a giant wolf with white fur rushed towards Elria. However, as it tried to bite Elria, it slammed into an invisible wall.

"Good girl, Shehri, even today."

From behind the wall, while growling and baring its fangs, Elria stroked Shehri's face after restraining its mouth and body with chains. Feeling satisfied with that, she then turned her gaze towards the dust-filled area. There lay the black dragon, groaning in pain.

"It's best to send that child back. The wounds inflicted by the <<Mana-Eater Wolf>> drain its magic power, preventing healing. I think it ate a lot of magic power when it bit down."

For summoned magical beasts, there was no such thing as 'death'. Their physical forms were just temporary constructs created by mages, animated by the 'soul' of the creature's original form from a distant place.

However... even these temporary forms felt pain when injured. If their internal magic power were exhausted, not only would the temporary form collapse, but the 'soul' of the main body would also be affected.

In the worst-case scenario… a mage could lose their contracted magical beast.

The black dragon was clearly no longer fit to fight. Any summoner would understand that it was their defeat.

Or so it seemed.

"――――It's... not over yet."

Standing by the black dragon, Rufus’s murmur was heard.

Right after, Shehri started to fiercely struggle, as if about to break its chains.

"There's no way Rafika could lose――ABSOLUTELY NOT!!"

The moment Rufus shouted with intense emotion――the fallen black dragon raised its head and launched a dazzling fireball. And the giant wolf, Shehri, despite being chained, had lunged in front of Elria, only to be engulfed by flames.

"――SHEHRI!!"

Seeing the giant wolf cry out in pain from the flames, Elria immediately severed its ‘soul’ from the vessel.

Shehri's body went limp, transformed into particles of light, and disappeared. Simultaneously, the sound of falling metal was heard. Dragon scales, as hard as steel, had been propelled by the fireball's explosion and pierced through Shehri.

"...I can't forgive that."

With eyes filled with rage, she glared at Rufus and the black dragon.

One wrong move and Shehri would have undoubtedly lost its life.

Such actions could be natural if it had been a life-or-death battle. However, what Elria and Rufus were engaged in was a mock battle. Once the outcome was clear, Rufus should have withdrawn the black dragon.

"In mock battles, you shouldn't take actions that could kill the opponent. Whether it's against the mage or their summoned magical beast――"

"To me, mock battles and actual battles are no different."

In her light red eyes, determination floated as Rufus glared at Elria.

"No matter what happens――Rafika and I can't afford to lose."

The expression on her face did not reflect her belief in her friend's victory. Instead, tension, desperation, and impatience were all mingled in her expression.

As if heeding the words of its master, the black dragon slowly rose to its feet. Though bleeding from its wounds and staggering from depleted magic power, it continued to stand, as if to demonstrate that it had not yet been defeated.

Just as Elria was about to speak――sturdy stone pillars rained down from the heavens, encircling the black dragon. And then, the tilted pillars combined to form a ‘cage’.

"――E-Excuse me... may I interrupt for a moment?"

Such a feeble voice could be heard from behind Elria. There――Philia, holding a magic tool, stood with an apologetic wry smile.

"According to the report, it seems you were engaged in a mock battle... Given the dangerous state Rufus-sama's magical beast could enter if the fight continued, I would like to conclude this mock battle here."

Rufus was about to say something in response, but upon realizing that Philia was the teacher in charge, she silently nodded.

Teachers in charge had the authority to punish their students if they misused magic, engaged in criminal activities, or took dangerous actions.

Although Rufus was a student in another class and thus not directly under Philia's authority, failing to comply with her instructions at that moment could have led to later punishment through her own teacher in charge.

"Is it fine with you too, Elria-sama?"

"............Mm."

"Y-You don't have to look so displeased...!"

While Elria was pursing her lips, her head was suddenly struck.

"Don't make such a sulky face."

"......Reid?"

"Yes, it’s me. I was training with Kid Faregh when I saw you guys fighting. Since your opponent is the <<Dragon Princess>> from another class, I thought it'd be safe to call Philia-sensei."

"......What about Faregh?"

"I left him behind because he said he can't move anymore."

Reid said it casually, but Faregh had trained in magic combat since childhood. He had probably been pushed too hard or mercilessly beaten up.

"The <<Dragon Princess>> over there, if you want to settle this once and for all, better step back for now. Winning a single mock battle won't mean anything, you know."

"...For me, it does mean something."

"What I'm saying is, try to understand the 'value of victory'. Creating a risk for your precious dragon to die just for a single win is the least valuable victory there is."

Saying this, Reid pointed to the black dragon, which was now too exhausted to resist and was trapped in a stone cage.

Rufus seemed about to say something in response, but instead, she silently released her magic.

The black dragon's body was transformed into particles of light and disappeared.

"Even if there's no value, we'll still have to pick it up again another time."

With a trembling voice, Rufus turned her back to Reid and the others. And so, she walked away, showing them only her small retreating figure.

THSK Vol. 1 Chapter 2 Part 11

Chapter 2 Part 11

11

I had anticipated that things would turn out this way.

From the moment I sat at the same table as Princess Valtrune, everything had been going according to her plans.

"...Very well. I'll join forces with you, Princess Valtrune."

On this day, I, Ixion Leto Reshfeld, the fourth prince of the Kingdom of Reshfeld, decided to renounce my loyalty to the Kingdom.

As a result of discussions with her, I promised to side with the Empire in the upcoming war between the Kingdom and the Empire.

The military power of the Valugan Empire is world-class.

The Kingdom also has a substantial military, but I cannot imagine it defeating the Empire.

And most importantly,

"Thank you, Prince Ixion."

I cannot bear the thought of being an enemy of Princess Valtrune, who is far more intelligent than my brothers.

"No, I simply chose the side that seemed most beneficial to me."

"Even so, I'm pleased."

If I had to add something, her words were also quite persuasive.

‘I promise to recommend you as the new king of the Kingdom, should the Empire win the war between the two countries.’

Hearing that, how could I not be moved?

It was clear that the relations between the two countries would break down now that her engagement to my brother Yuri had been annulled.

Although I had not heard about the engagement being annulled, if it had been officially dissolved with my father's consent, then it was irreversible.

――Even if I were to serve this kingdom, my status as the fourth prince would surely make me a hindrance.

I would probably be sent to the front lines when war breaks out.

I want to avoid the worst possible future of being ‘used until I die’.

On the other hand, the benefits of siding with the Empire are significant.

The Imperial Princess is offering to make me the next king. I find her far more trustworthy than my brothers Sein and Yuri.

Additionally, the likelihood of being forced into a difficult battle on the front lines seems low.

She said I can do as I please, as long as I cooperate when necessary.

――There was no way I could turn down such favorable terms.

"Thank you again, Prince Ixion. I appreciate your wise decision."

Wise decision, huh…? She bowed her head as she said this.

I am the fourth prince with a dubious standing, lacking prospects for a free life or the throne. But because of this unfortunate status, she reached out to me.

She must have thought I would be easy to pull in.

I think it is a good judgment. In fact, I have decided to lend her my hand. I am well aware that I am an easy pawn to obtain.

With that, I asked her,

"Sister Valtrune, what should I do first?"

Once I had decided to lend her my hand, there was no turning back.

"Um, Prince Ixion, as I've been saying, I am no longer in a position to be called 'sister'..."

"No, if possible, may I continue to call you that?"

"........."

Either way, we will eventually be at odds with the Kingdom. As long as I stand by her, I intend to continue respecting her as a sister, not bound by blood. So, I would like to keep calling her that.

This is also a symbol of my resolve.

"Alright. You can call me whatever you like."

"Thank you, Sister."

The topic is then shifted to what I should do.

"Prince Ixion, I have a request for you right away. Soon, the Kingdom will demand the transfer of the Dyrst region, which is part of the Empire's territory. Then they would invade the Empire. ...At that time, can you delay the invasion of the Kingdom's forces, even just a little…? Is that possible?"

To make her plan work, it is essential for me to have some influence over the military. It is uncertain how much I, being the fourth prince, can do, but it is going to be challenging.

However, without hesitation, I nodded my head.

"Understood. I'll do something about it!"

It was only natural to give my all to the side I had bet on. I vowed to exert an effort I had never applied before for her sake.

The life I was supposed to live as the fourth prince took a significant step forward.

Chapter 2 Part 10

10

Born as a prince in the Kingdom of Reshfeld, I never had any expectations for this life. My brothers, who share my blood, are all selfish. They just continue to behave arrogantly within the castle simply because they are princes. My father and mother are only interested in my two older brothers. They have not even spoken to me, the fourth prince, in a long time.

"...Haa, how boring."

I spend my days waiting for time to pass in this cramped room. I practice swordsmanship and study culture just enough to achieve mediocre results, making sure not to stand out.

――What meaning can I find in this kind of life?

Since the day I began to harbor such doubts, I have wanted to abandon my position as a prince.

A fourth prince who can never become king. An oppressive, boring life with no merit whatsoever.

"Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad to defect to the Valugan Empire... Living as a commoner might be nice."

These muttered words were merely a joke.

I do not seriously wish for that, but at least it seems more attractive than maintaining the status quo.

I genuinely want to see the outside world freely and live my life for myself.

"Your Royal Highness, a guest has arrived."

I heard the maid's voice from outside the room.

People who visit me are almost always eccentric because buttering up a failed prince like me is pointless. Normally, they would try to deepen their relationship with my older brothers. That would certainly be more advantageous for them.

"Who is it?"

"That’s… um, it's a bit difficult to explain who it is..."

I can tell from her voice that the maid is flustered.

She continues to mumble indecisively.

――I became slightly interested.

"Well, it's fine. Where is this guest?"

I cut off the maid's reply and made my decision.

"The guest is in the adjacent guest room, but um, Your Royal Highness…"

"Let's meet them."

"Eh?"

"I said I want to meet this guest."

I opened the door of my room.

The maid, who looked surprised, was standing there frozen, but I looked around without paying her any particular attention.

The hallway is as quiet as ever, and I cannot even hear the voice of the guest in the next room. I do not see any servants, just the usual desolation.

"Your Royal Highness, are you sure you want to meet this guest?"

In response to the maid's question, I replied immediately.

"Yes, I want to see the face of someone who would want to meet me, this failure of a prince."

"Is that so... but the relationship between Your Royal Highness and this guest is a bit... complicated."

The maid seems reluctant to let me meet this guest.

"Would it be a problem if I meet this person?"

"N-No, I don't think there would be any issue..."

"Then it's fine. Call them immediately."

――I am a little excited for the first time in a while.

Who is this person that even the maid seems so reluctant to introduce?

Who would waste their time to meet someone like me...? I stand in front of the door of the adjacent room.

"Now, let's see who is the person bored enough to visit me..."

I slowly opened the door.

When I step into the room, I sense a change in the atmosphere.

A harmonious atmosphere... combined with a tense air.

"......You are――"

The person inside was someone familiar.

Not just the royalty and nobles, everyone knows about her.

Because she is the person who served as the bridge between the Kingdom and the Empire.

"Good day, Prince Ixion."

"Sister Valtrune...?"

The person standing there was Valtrune von Felsdorf, the Imperial Princess and the fiancée of my older brother.

"Why...?"

Doubts fill my mind. I had always thought that she would not waste her time on someone like me.

Whatever her motive might be, showing her any disrespect is unforgivable. It could escalate into a diplomatic issue.

I quickly hid my previously curious attitude.

Feeling cold sweat, I moved further into the room.

How much time has passed since I was taken aback?

Facing me, who was frozen in place, Princess Valtrune, with a smile, blinked and patiently waited for me to speak.

Her expression seemed much more mature than the last time I saw her. And her melancholic eyes, as if she sees through everything, paired with her smile, felt unnatural.

"Um, why… are you here, Sister Valtrune?"

The words squeezed from my throat were laced with vague suspicions. Despite my incoherent speech, she seemed to understand my intention clearly and began to answer my question.

"I came to see you, Prince Ixion."

said the Princess.

...I still do not understand. Why would she want to see me?

We barely exchanged pleasantries before. Yet now, she seems to have a keen interest in me. What has changed in her heart?

She soon revealed the answer.

"And, let me correct one thing... I'm no longer your sister."

It was as if she could see right through my heart, making my chest tighten.

What is this?

Like the calm before the storm, I felt a premonition that something tremendous would happen soon, something beyond imagination.

"Prince Ixion… I have called off my engagement with Prince Yuri. So, you don't need to call me sister anymore."

Princess Valtrune spoke fluently, her expression very calm.

However, my emotions were turbulent. And the man beside her... the black-haired escort, has drawn my attention since earlier.

A dangerous vibe was emanating from him.

It was not that I felt threatened by him. And yet, chills ran down my spine, warning me not to provoke him.

This is not a mere hunch. The fact that she trusts him completely is evident. It was unusual for an Imperial Princess to have just one escort.

"........."

The man did not say anything, but his occasional gestures towards her seemed like they were communicating something.

‘I can't escape now,’ naturally popped into my head.

I have never felt anything like this before.

No matter what I say, everything seems futile before these two, and they appear to be a different breed from the common lot who would be pleased with empty words.

Prolonging the discussion would probably be meaningless.

In that case, let's get down to business and have them leave as soon as possible.

For me, the atmosphere was suffocating.

"So, what is Sister Valtrune's true purpose for being here?"

The Princess, known for her intelligence, wouldn't have come all this way just to make a trivial joke by saying she wanted to see me.

Upon hearing my words, Princess Valtrune's expression changed abruptly.

"Right... feeling each other out is a waste of time. You're a very wise person."

What does she know about me?

She continued to assess me with her eyes.

Is she bringing something into my life?

Where would it lead me? I do not know, but undoubtedly, my fate will be heavily affected if I listen to her.

She grinned wickedly and leaned forward.

"Prince Ixion... have you ever thought about becoming the ruler of this country?"

Now, in front of me was an enormous bomb that seemed like it could explode at the slightest touch.

Am I prepared for this dangerous deal? I need to decide now.

THSK Vol. 1 Chapter 2 Part 9

Chapter 2 Part 9

War is a great calamity that throws everything into chaos.

It is a foolish act that threatens people's peace.

A spark of conflict that no one desires.

Nevertheless, quelling the chaos of war is not an easy task.

Once set in motion, it accelerates and continues to move forward until it exhausts itself.

"Aldia, let's move on to the next operation."

The detestable age of war is unavoidable.

Rather than avoiding causing wars, Princess Valtrune was planning to take her next step to control the overall situation and put it in her favor.

"Your Imperial Highness, the next operation? I thought you were just going to return to the Empire."

"The formal annulment of my engagement with Prince Yuri was a blow that led to a decline in my status within the Empire. However, it was necessary for me to move forward. You understand, don't you?"

"Yes, of course."

Maintaining a connection with the Kingdom will have long-term consequences.

There was no point in continuing an ambiguous relationship. It was the right decision to sever ties with the Prince immediately, once she had decided to do so. With that in mind, she poses the next question.

"So, what is necessary for me to get closer to becoming the empress next?"

"........."

From my point of view, she is nearly flawless.

She has the ability to become an empress as she is.

"In that case, securing talented individuals... perhaps?"

"You're on the right track. The lack of talented generals was one of the reasons the Empire lost to the Kingdom. Recruiting and developing capable people is essential for us."

She nods in agreement with my thoughts but interrupts with, "However," making it clear that I am not entirely correct.

"Your Imperial Highness, what do you intend to do?"

When asked, she leans in close to my ear and whispers in a crystal-clear voice.

"I will win over a significant figure within this kingdom… a prince."

"A prince…?"

"Yes, that's right."

I was utterly shocked for a moment, but upon further thought, what she was trying to say became clear.

"In other words, you aim to draw in a prince other than Prince Yuri, correct?"

"Exactly. I have no lingering attachment to Prince Yuri, but I'd prefer not to sever all ties with the royal family."

There are five princes in the Kingdom of Reshfeld.

Only the first and second princes are typically involved in the succession to the throne. The third prince and below have almost zero chance. In a harsh expression, they are the reserves in case something happens to the first two princes.

Naturally, the princes would also be treated differently.

――If that's the case, the prince that Princess Valtrune wants to bring into her fold would be the third prince or lower. It means a prince with a low chance of becoming the ultimate authority.

"Your Imperial Highness, who are you targeting?"

She's probably not thinking of winning over multiple princes. The reason she's trying to win the favor of a prince to get closer to the emperor is solely to strengthen her influence within the Empire.

"I rule out the First Prince Sein and the Second Prince Yuri. There's little benefit for them to get close to me, as they are involved in the succession to the throne, and I don't wish to either."

Mixing facts with her own feelings, Princess Valtrune speaks calmly.

"As for the Third Prince Blois, he's no good. Like the first and second prince, he has a personality problem and is not particularly talented. He's hard to handle and useless."

She harshly evaluates the third prince and also states she has no intention of involving the fifth prince simply because ‘he is too young’.

By this point, it is clear who her target is: the Fourth Prince, Ixion Leto Reshfeld.

He is known as the ‘Ghost Prince’, an unremarkable presence among the five princes.

"Your Imperial Highness, why Prince Ixion?"

"That's because he's extremely talented, much like you."

"I see. If you say so, Your Imperial Highness, there is no doubt about it."

I understand everything from her meaningful phrasing.

That is, Prince Ixion is only pretending to be an ‘incompetent prince’.

Chapter 2 Part 8

The Kingdom of Reshfeld.

His Majesty the King, Douglas Leto Reshfeld.

He is the king who rules this country and Prince Yuri's parent.

His stature was immense, and as he looked down upon us from his elevated throne, his visage truly reflected that of a ruler. The Princess and I had come to discuss with him about her engagement with Prince Yuri.

"And what brings you here today?"

Compared to Prince Yuri, King Douglas exuded an even greater aura of refinement.

How such a cunning prince could have emerged from this man was truly puzzling.

"Actually, I have come to discuss my engagement with Prince Yuri."

"Oh…?"

Douglas moved his chin, prompting her to continue. She took a deep breath after making brief eye contact with me.

"I wish to annul my engagement with Prince Yuri."

‘Annulment of Engagement’

Upon hearing those words, Douglas's gaze sharpened like an arrow ready to strike down its enemy.

"Annulment of the engagement, you say...? Surely, I must have misheard?"

"No, Your Majesty, you heard every word correctly."

A cold sweat trickled down my spine. The unpleasant silence and Douglas's contemplative face heightened the tension in the throne room.

"You wish to annul your engagement with my son…?"

His sonorous voice echoed throughout the throne room.

Even Princess Valtrune seemed a bit tense. However, she was resolute.

She quickly regained her composure and explained with her hand on her chest.

"No, it was actually Prince Yuri the Second Prince who first raised the issue. He feels I am lacking as his fiancée."

"That can't be. You are the Imperial Princess of the Valugan Empire, known for your intelligence. Furthermore, I recognize your qualities as well."

"Thank you very much for your kind words. However, I seem to be a person of shallow consideration, often displeasing Prince Yuri."

Douglas furrowed his brows at her exaggerated humility.

After hearing her words, he turned his gaze to Prince Yuri, who was standing a short distance away.

"Yuri... is this true?"

If, at this moment, the Prince tried to act innocent and place the blame entirely on her, I would have to reveal the ‘magic tool’ hidden inside my pocket. If he were as cunning as he seemed, I would have no choice but to use our last resort. However, our tense moment turned out to be unfounded.

"Yes, Father! A princess from another country with such an attitude is not suitable for me. I've wanted to break off our engagement for quite some time!"

"I see..."

"Father, please annul my engagement with her immediately!"

To put it simply, the Prince was a complete fool. He wanted to break off the engagement, and she was proposing it to King Douglas.

An engagement that both parties agreed to annul. The relationship between the Kingdom and the Empire might be in jeopardy, but forcing them to continue a relationship that is on the verge of crumbling seems inevitable. Eventually, it will fall apart.

"I see... So, both of you agree on annulling the engagement?"

"Yes."

"Of course!"

Considering it was the Prince who first wanted the annulment, there was no way Douglas could force them to stay engaged.

"I see..."

This outcome was inevitable because the Prince wished to break off the engagement. The moment his words reached Douglas, things were set in motion exactly as we had hoped.

"Your Majesty... will you allow the annulment of our engagement?"

"...Understood. I hereby declare the annulment of the engagement between Yuri Leto Reshfeld and Valtrune von Felsdorf!"

From this moment on, relations between the two countries were likely to deteriorate. This was an unavoidable circumstance. However, the vague ties between them had been firmly severed.

The Princess had a bright expression on her face.

"I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for your precious time."

The Prince watched her, looking pleased. Yet, from this moment on, his position would gradually crumble, eventually leading to his downfall.

The next king would likely be the first prince. Prince Yuri had lost the significant support of an engagement with the Empire's Imperial Princess, which considerably diminished his chances of ascending the throne.

If he had just maintained the engagement, there would have been no war, and he could have led a stable life as a reigning king. But the one who first discarded that opportunity was Prince Yuri himself.

"Haha! At last, I can lead a new life with Reshia!"

――A foolish prince who, being swayed by the Saintess, threw away a promising life. However, he will not come to understand that for a while. For now, he should just savor this fleeting joy.

As the elated Prince celebrated, Princess Valtrune stood up gracefully. Seeing that, I also raised my knees off the ground.

"Then, I shall take my leave."

Having completed her business, she prepared to leave.

"Hey, Valtrune."

"...What is it?"

"It's a pity, isn't it? Being discarded by me. You can't become the next queen of the Kingdom of Reshfeld anymore."

"Indeed... Goodbye, Prince Yuri."

The Princess probably knew that his words would eventually bounce back to him. But she felt no obligation to point that out.

She was not just another individual amongst the royals. The Princess was a noblewoman aiming for the pinnacle――the position of empress. The breaking of her engagement with the Prince did not waver her determination.

"Your Imperial Highness... congratulations on formally annulling your engagement with Prince Yuri."

I offer her words with a hint of sarcasm towards the Prince. She looked back at me with a smile forming on her lips.

"Yes, thank you. Now I can finally move forward."

The path ahead is long.

The future where she becomes the empress will be both a thorny path and the start of a history where she breaks a dark, bloodstained fate.

I will walk alongside her on this path to supremacy.

We will bear wounds and suffer together, but I will continue supporting her from the closest vantage point until she reaches her final destination.

THSK Vol. 1 Chapter 2 Part 7

Chapter 2 Part 7

Currently, Princess Valtrune and I are on our way to the royal castle of the Kingdom of Reshfeld.

In the aftermath of the engagement annulment, she is taking this step to sever ties with Prince Yuri formally.

During the graduation ceremony at the military academy, the Princess and the Prince had clearly taken opposing stances. However, simply taking a stand doesn't officially break off an engagement between the royal and imperial families.

The annulment of the engagement is only finalized when formal letters are exchanged.

In my previous life, their engagement had continued even though their relationship had deteriorated. This had prevented her from securing her position within the Empire, effectively closing the path to becoming an empress.

――Which is why a formal annulment of the engagement is necessary this time.

"Aldia. I believe the annulment of the engagement will proceed without a hitch. But if an emergency arises, I'm counting on you."

I nodded, gripping a certain object she had given me――a small magic tool that could briefly record voices. Ideally, it won't be necessary, but it's a precaution, insisted upon by her.

I accompany her precisely because we've considered unforeseen circumstances. And moving in a way that meets those expectations is my first task.

"I will execute everything according to your plan, Your Imperial Highness."

"Thank you. I find that very reassuring."

Our resolve is set.

We pass through the gates of the royal castle and approach the one who stands in our way. The interior of the castle is lavishly designed, not a place for commoners like me, but this time is an exception.

"Valtrune von Felsdorf requests an audience with Prince Yuri!"

I had been allowed entry under the pretext of serving as her escort. We proceed down a corridor where someone seems to be waiting for us――it’s Prince Yuri, a person she would likely detest the most.

"Heh, so you came after all, Valtrune. I thought you wouldn't dare show up."

The Prince looks down on us with disdain, mocking her stoic expression.

"Cut the talk. I'm here to break off our engagement."

"What's the point…? You were the one I discarded. Trying to repeal it now would be pointless!"

I'm tempted to sigh at his arrogant attitude. It's truly foolish. Why does he think she would cling to the engagement with him?

She is the Imperial Princess of the Empire, and he is oblivious to the fact that they are on equal footing, completely disregarding any diplomatic considerations.

Despite his barrage of disdainful words, her face remains unchanged, speaking dispassionately.

"Is that so? Then let's officially annul this engagement with the approval of His Majesty the King."

To her, breaking off the engagement is neither painful nor troublesome.

Prince Yuri, however, gradually looks displeased, perhaps because her reaction wasn't what he expected.

"You seem quite composed."

"It's just the fact."

"――――!"

Then, his anger turns toward me, who stands beside Princess Valtrune.

"And who is the man beside you? He looks of low standing."

The Prince doesn't know me. We've never directly interacted before, likely because I'm a commoner. That's why he understands that I am not a noble.

"He is my escort."

"Oh? So, the Imperial Princess has such a scrawny commoner as an escort. Haha, now I see the level of the Empire!"

"Haa..."

Prince Yuri continues to provoke. However, she doesn't even cast her gaze at the Prince.

Sighing, she ignores him and starts walking toward the room where the king resides.

"Aldia, let's go."

"Yes, Your Imperial Highness."

I obey and follow closely behind her.

"Hey, wait!"

The Prince seems to be bothered by being ignored.

He tried to grab her shoulder forcefully. However, I didn't overlook it. Just before his hand touches her shoulder, I firmly grasp it, preventing the forceful contact.

Normally, such an act of disrespect toward royalty would justify immediate execution. However, right now, I am acting under the guise of the Imperial Princess's escort.

"How dare a commoner like you touch me...!"

The Prince's face turned bright red with rage, but I did not hold back.

"She is the Imperial Princess of the Empire. I cannot allow any further disrespect."

"――――!"

Hearing the commotion, the surrounding guards swiftly encircled us.

"Do you even know what you're doing?"

"I'm merely fulfilling my duties as the escort of the Imperial Princess."

"…You bastard!"

He boils over in rage, glaring at me.

"Guards, behead this insolent fool!"

"B-But… he's the escort of Her Imperial Highness Princess Valtrune..."

"I don't care! Do it now! This is an order!"

Confused, the guards draw their swords.

Once ordered by the Prince, there's no talking back.

――Can't be helped, then.

"If you intend to proceed, then I shall also fight you seriously."

I have my own feelings about this, too.

The insults Prince Yuri has thrown at my lord, Princess Valtrune, have been numerous. As her knight, I've been holding back, but irritation is welling up from within me.

Meeting the Prince's hostile gaze, I glared back. Then, the Prince's face suddenly shows signs of fear.

Was he that scared?

"…H-Hurry up!"

At the Prince's words, the guards start closing the distance.

Amidst this growing tension, the hand not holding the Prince is gripped by Princess Valtrune.

"That's enough."

When I turned around, she had a somewhat troubled expression on her face.

"Aldia, now's not the time. I understand how you feel, but causing a scene isn't wise."

"But…"

"I know, it's for my sake, isn’t it…? Thank you. But calm down, okay?"

She probably saw right through my heated emotions.

I take a deep breath and let go of the Prince's hand.

The moment I let go, he rubs the part of his hand that I had grabbed and steps back toward the guards.

"…Don't think you'll get away with this!"

Even when glared at, I feel no particular fear.

"........."

"Ugh… damn it, are you making fun of me!?"

Until now, his anger was apparent. But recognizing the change in the situation, he displays a malicious smile.

"Well, fine. It's best to dispose of trash like you right here. Do it, you all!"

Having been released, he now speaks with more confidence than before.

"Your Imperial Highness, permission to unsheathe my sword…"

"It can’t be helped. But you must not kill the guards."

"Understood."

I slowly draw my black sword that's been hanging at my waist.

The guards also began to aim their swords at me.

They can't go against Prince Yuri's orders. Hence, they have no choice but to oppose us.

"If you point your sword at me――you should be prepared to lose a limb or two."

As I take a step forward, the atmosphere suddenly shifts.

Deliberately pressuring the opponents, the guards start to move anxiously.

Then, they all come rushing at me in unison――a coordinated, nimble movement.

"Take this...!"

――I see. Their swordsmanship is not bad at all.

The skill level of the guards is quite refined.

As expected from those entrusted with guarding the royal castle, they are on an entirely different level compared to the students of the Philnotes Military Academy. They've staked their lives on this job.

Their movements are well-coordinated, and each one is highly skilled. They maintain distance from one another and attack me without interference.

"――Haah!"

"Yaah...!"

"Fuah!"

They don't flinch, even against my intimidation. They're fully prepared.

While carefully dodging their attacks, I clash swords against them with great force.

I find a moment's opening and knock their swords away.

"WHA...!?"

Indeed, these guards are strong.

From the fact that Prince Yuri could command them, it's clear that the guards have strong trust from the royalty.

...However, that's all there is to it. With the level of these guards here, they will never reach me with their swords.

One of the guards' sword flies through the air and sticks into the floor a short distance away.

"Haah!"

"――Fuah!"

I also knock away the swords held by the nearby guards.

"N-No way..."

The guards make faces as if they don't understand what just happened.

"Do you still want to continue...?"

"T-That’s..."

"I don't mind if injuries occur."

They stop moving altogether at that.

"What are you doing? Stop fooling around and take his head already!"

The Prince's heckling flies over, but the guards no longer close the distance. There's not a single step taken towards me.

"Shall I cut off both of your arms next? If you're willing to stake your lives, I'm more than happy to oblige."

"――――!?"

As I tell them in a threatening low voice, the guards all at once turn their gaze towards the Prince.

"...We can't."

"What did you say? Your voice is so soft that I can't hear you."

"Your Royal Highness... We can't defeat him."

"What? …Hey, say that again."

"I said we can't defeat him! The difference in our abilities is too vast!"

With those words, the guards began to sheath their swords one after another.

"Huh? Don't spout such nonsense! He's just one person!"

Judging from his attitude, the Prince probably couldn't measure my strength.

I can't help but feel sorry for the guards who are being asked to do something unreasonable.

"Aren't you all soldiers serving the proud Kingdom!?"

"No matter how many times you ask, the answer is the same. It's impossible!"

"Fools! It's your job to make the impossible possible!"

The guards of the Kingdom gathered here are exceptional. They are well aware that they're being overpowered.

The Prince may not understand, but I have put tiny cracks in all the swords held by the surrounding guards. If they aim their swords at me one more time, their blades will undoubtedly shatter.

The outcome of this match has already been decided.

"...That's enough. Prince Yuri, you have lost."

As if forcing him to face the cruel reality, Princess Valtrune speaks sternly.

"Don't joke around! Aren't you all ashamed to lose to such an insolent youth!?"

"Saying such things is pointless. My escort will not lose to anyone... One look at his swordsmanship, and you should easily understand the difference in their abilities."

"Quiet! Don't speak so arrogantly!"

"But it's the truth."

Upon hearing this, a sense of humiliation seems to have surfaced on the Prince's face. This skirmish doesn't carry much weight. It's nothing more than a response to the insult made by the Prince against her.

"Your Imperial Highness, I apologize for showing you something unsightly."

"It's fine, Aldia. It was a good opportunity to reaffirm your strength. Besides, you held back well. No one is dead thanks to you."

At Princess Valtrune's words, the faces of the guards turn pale again.

"If it is Your Imperial Highness's command, I intend to accomplish anything."

"I feel truly reassured that you're here, Aldia. So, you heard that, Prince Yuri? Please don't make me choose the worst option, okay?"

"――Damn it!"

From her expression, it's clear. It was a cheerful demeanor, as if all the stress she had been holding onto was instantly relieved.

RHXS Vol. 2 Chapter 2 Part 3

Chapter 2 Part 3

The Vegalta Royal Magic Academy occupies an expansive piece of land.

Surrounded by high walls resembling a fortress city, the academy's grounds extend to encompass mountains, valleys, wilderness, seashores, wetlands, forests, abandoned mines, and deserted towns.

The academy has acquired lands that were previously designated as dangerous and repurposed them for training. All of these precautions are taken to prevent the spread of damage caused by magic to the surrounding areas.

While academy students have a certain level of magic skill when they enter the academy, it cannot be guaranteed that there won't be any outbursts or mishaps. In some cases, trial experiments with new magic may also be conducted.

Hence, basic or simple combat training is carried out using the magic tools created by Elise, a renowned expert in spatial magic and the academy's headmistress. Large-scale magic combat training makes use of the extensive lands owned by the academy. Naturally, magic tools are required for transporting to these training grounds.

The magic academy itself is located on the outskirts of the royal capital, and its training grounds are situated in rural areas with no villages or towns nearby. Therefore, when transporting to the training grounds, a teleportation tool that only academy members can operate is utilized.

However, there is a lingering concern: Reid's tendency to damage the teleportation tool itself――

"――Hey, Elria."

"Yes?"

"I've thought about this every time, but do you really need to cling to me like this?"

"Yes."

With her arms wrapped around Reid's torso, Elria nodded as if it were a matter of course.

Since all transportation to the training grounds had to be entrusted to Elria, they had to teleport together in this manner every time.

"Holding onto you like this reduces the consumption of magic power."

"Is that so?"

"Yes. Teleportation magic involves manipulating and displacing space, so when the designated range is smaller, it requires less magic power and fewer coordinate calculations, making it easier."

While clinging to Reid, Elria nodded.

Previously, she teleported an entire cave, which was probably because she had to cover a larger area since Millis and others were inside.

"Well, I've grown accustomed to seeing these two traveling around like this."

"Yeah, it's scary that not only us but the entire class is getting used to it."

Wiesel and Millis repeatedly nodded as if it were a familiar sight. However――today, there was one more reaction.

"Seriously… It's incredibly inconvenient not to be able to use magic. Without Caldwen, he wouldn't even be able to use magic tools, let alone teleport. I could never endure that."

Faregh crossed his arms, wearing an exasperated expression, but then his expression changed as if he had remembered something.

"I-I mean to say that it's inevitable if you're born without the ability to use it!"

"It's already bothersome, so just be yourself..."

There is a reason Faregh is on the same team as them and has such a peculiar attitude.

First of all, two of his followers took a leave of absence due to the incident last time. Although his followers, Valk and Lucas, weren't fatally injured, their treatment and recovery took time, so they did not participate in this conditional examination. As a result, the team's composition changed irregularly for this conditional examination, but apparently, nobody invited him.

Faregh himself seemed to have assumed that someone would approach him due to his skills, but in the meantime, the teams were decided by others. He rushed to ask other teams but was turned down, perhaps due to his daily attitude or the fear associated with his family name, Welminan. Thus, he ended up completely isolated.

Since everyone else had already formed their teams, Alma decided to include Faregh on their team, especially with Elria from the distinguished Caldwen family. The reason for that lies in the content of the conditional examination given to Elria.

"You should get along with Elria more than me. She is your lecturer from today onwards."

"...I'll do my best to teach."

While hiding behind Reid, Elria slightly pokes her head out and bows.

Elria was assigned a role akin to assisting her teammates in surpassing the evaluation criteria.

Her abilities as a mage have already been recognized by the academy as sufficient, and it is almost certain that she will be formally recognized as a mage after spending the required year at the academy. That's why the academy has reorganized with the goal of nurturing Elria as a special rank mage.

One aspect of this is ‘Teaching’.

This involves not only imparting knowledge of magic theory but also practical techniques, tactics, magic combat, maneuvering in actual battles, and enhancing the abilities of others through training.

It requires not just producing actual results but also the ability to understand others' magic, propose tactics and improvements based on one's understanding of magic, and accurately assess others' abilities while providing realistic solutions. Alma mentioned that the intention is to scrutinize one's ability in actual battles.

By the way, in Alma's case, it was noted that Philia, who worked alongside her as a mage, was recognized for her achievements.

In Elria's case, it seems that the academy's intention is to determine whether she possesses the qualifications of a special rank mage rather than focusing solely on the success or failure of the examination.

"Hehe... Elria-sama's teaching methods are strict, you know? It's worth watching whether a snobby young master can endure them."

"Hah…! Unlike you commoners, I'm sure I can handle it easily."

"Alright, I heard that! If you start complaining halfway through, I'll label you as a whiny snobby brat, lower than commoners!!"

"If I endure it, I'll call you a country bumpkin, lower than peasants!!"

"That’s too bad! My family loves sheep and cattle; we're herders!!"

"...Am I going to take the examination sandwiched between these two?"

"...And I have to teach in the midst of that?"

Watching the two squabbling, Wiesel and Elria appeared oddly fatigued. It seems there are various difficulties. And there was one more person――

"――Haaaaa……"

Near Reid, Alma sighed deeply.

While sitting with her knees hugged, she dug the ground with her battle axe.

"It was supposed to be a fun mock battle with His Excellency……"

"The headmistress also told us to be prepared in case of emergencies, and since other classes are also participating this time, unexpected situations are likely to occur…"

In response to Alma, who was slumping in disappointment, Philia patted her shoulder with a wry smile.

This time, the conditions given to Reid were no different from those for other students.

Currently, special rank mages are scattered across various places by royal decree, so those who are available after completing their missions will oversee Reid's examination. However, since the decision was made hastily and no one was available, and there was also a discussion about Elria's request in "Let’s split it in half", it will be a normal examination this time.

With that said, Alma had previously applied for a mock battle under the pretext of assessing Reid's abilities and uncovering his true character, as he was the subject of surveillance. However, it seems her request was denied, likely due to her reckless actions in the past.

"Haa... I suppose I'll just watch Philia's battle then…"

"......Eh, me?"

"Ever since you started working at the academy, you've been focused on research and haven't participated in actual battles. Since I recommended you, I'd like to see your current abilities. Why don't you engage in a mock battle with a suitable student?"

"N-No... I'm a teacher, and my primary duty is to supervise. Unlike Alma-chan, my magic isn't suited for battle――Ouch!?"

"Don't call me 'Alma-chan'. If you're spineless, we can have a mock battle until morning."

"Ugh... The memories of getting beaten up during my student days...!!"

Without giving her a choice, Alma drags Philia away. Although Alma had the authority to move freely, it was a rather pitiable treatment.

As the two leave, Reid turns to the others.

"Well then, shall we get started, too?"

The other teams are already discussing their plans, exchanging information by actually demonstrating their magic.

"Speaking of which, has Elria-sama been restricted again?"

"Yes... Alma-sensei said I can only use magic up to the third tier."

Elria sadly furrows her brows.

The actual restriction came from Elise, but since she fought toe-to-toe against a special rank mage using nothing but fifth tier magic through ‘Weighted Multiplication Deployment’, further restrictions were already decided for the next examination.

"But Elria, you'll be fine even with more restrictions, right?"

"Yes."

"That immediate answer is so like you."

"But casting magic using ‘Weighted Multiplication Deployment’ from the third tier takes time, so the usable magic and frequency of use are limited. I think it's a good adjustment because there are many other considerations, such as maintaining the magic without dissipating it by sacrificing magic power consumption."

Saying so, Elria nods excitedly.

It may seem like an unreasonable limitation for those aspiring to become mages, but for Elria, it appears to be a thrilling challenge. However, upon hearing this, Wiesel furrows his brow and strokes his chin.

"With only up to the third tier, huh…? It seems we'll be at a disadvantage against other academy students."

"I know, right... I believe that if you've made it into the magic academy, you should have the ability to use at least fourth tier magic."

In general, everyday life magic and magic tools are classified up to the second tier. From the third tier onward, it's considered "magic with lethal potential", typically handled by mages.

Within that, third tier magic is a level that can be used by ordinary people for specific purposes, like pest control. From a mage's perspective, it's considered magic with minimal power for "neutralizing the target".

Even with ‘Weighted Multiplication Deployment’, the situation won't change significantly with just Elria alone against fellow students. They will need to think of a way to deal with it. Hence, Elria's role will become more challenging, especially when considering the future.

"There's a possibility that even Elria-sama's examinations might change, similar to Reid-san's situation. So, considering what lies ahead, it would be best for us to clarify our roles now..."

"That's right. Even if the two were to take the examinations on their own, showcasing their abilities clearly might lead to more opportunities to be recruited by other teams."

With the exception of special rank mages, most mages operate in units or teams. With that in mind, it's important for mages to clarify their strengths and roles when operating. However, there are certainly those who do not understand that.

"Haa... I feel sorry for the commoners. If they had a family name as prominent as Welminan and could wield magic of the eighth tier as I do now, they wouldn't need to worry."

"But Faregh-san, you're so isolated that no team will take you in anymore, right?"

"Stop that... those words hurt…!!"

Faregh, who was being haughty, was immediately brought down by Millis's comment.

Setting aside his reputation and personality, Faregh was born into a distinguished family and has displayed substantial ability since childhood. That is probably why he holds a position that makes it hard for others to approach him.

"Then, why don’t we let Kid Faregh lead the team? If we add the three of us here with the resting Valk and Lucas, we'll have five, right?"

"I see, so you're suggesting I should be the leader!"

"Yeah, that's what I'm saying."

"............Eh?"

When Reid affirmed, Faregh's eyes widened.

"...Wait, am I really doing it?"

"That's what I said. You're the leader."

"So... does that mean everyone will absolutely obey me?"

"No, we won't simply obey you."

"Why not!?"

"A leader's role isn't to force others to follow but to 'make decisions'. During the last examination, you showed the ability to decide to 'escape' when the Armament Dragon attacked, making the right choice even under pressure and saving two injured people. Your judgment stands out."

When Reid honestly praised him, Faregh seemed taken aback.

"Additionally, a leader must accurately assess the capabilities of the team members to plan operations or tactics and give instructions while fighting. If this responsibility falls to Kid Faregh, our combat effectiveness will be significantly reduced. So, Wiesel is better suited to issue commands during battle."

"...So, in other words, Lord Welminan makes decisions on starting battles or retreating, and I, who stay in the rear, give instructions and judgments during battle, right?"

"I-In that case, what am I supposed to do?"

"What do you want to do?"

"Obviously, I want to mow down others with my magic!"

"Then go for it."

"You're not just saying this randomly, are you!?"

"Being able to use eighth tier magic means you're strong, and strong individuals tend to draw attention. If you act as a skirmisher, it will be easier for us to maneuver."

When Reid explained his intentions, Elria also nodded in agreement.

"Yes, that could work. I was considering placing Millis at the front, but I think it's also important to consider her wishes."

"...Eh, why me?"

"Because Millis is skilled in protection and barrier magic, so I thought you could hold your own."

"Um, what should I do after holding up the defense?"

"Until others can deal with it, endure concentrated enemy fire with determination not to die."

"Congratulations, Faregh-san, you are the leader."

"Don't touch my shoulder with that beaming smile...!!"

Having escaped the role of a shield, Millis was smiling with her hand on Faregh's shoulder. Elria had also devised a good tactic, but Millis had no desire to be left alone on the frontlines to take a beating.

However, Elria then frowned slightly.

"It might be challenging for Faregh to serve as the vanguard."

"Is that so?"

"Because those who can use powerful magic usually have little experience in the vanguard."

"...I see, I understand what you mean."

This was something that Galleon, Elria's father, had mentioned before.

In modern magic combat, the primary focus is on medium and long-range attacks. However, if the vanguard is trained for close-quarters combat, the chances of engaging in interpersonal combat increase significantly. This is because, unlike fighting magical beasts, humans can use ‘magic’.

Even if one were to use a wide-range, high-powered magic over a large area, it could be blocked by barrier or protection magic. Using such large-scale magic would also deplete a significant amount of magic power.

This is why, in interpersonal combat, it becomes necessary to limit the range of magic to conserve magic power and prioritize speed to prevent the opponent from mounting a defense.

However... someone like Faregh, who inherently possesses a substantial amount of magic power, can forcibly break through the barrier or protection magic, disregarding the high consumption rate of magic power. In other words, he can overpower his opponents by relying on his vast magic power reserves.

Since he can handle magic from the eighth tier, it's likely that he underwent combat training with the assumption of using high-powered magic from medium to long range, rather than being in the vanguard.

That means――

"He's physically the weakest trashy kid among us."

"Yes, in close-quarters combat, he's just a weakling who lacks physical strength."

"Have I done anything to deserve such harsh words from you guys...!?"

Faregh fell to his knees, overwhelmed by their ruthless remarks.

But not only Faregh; very few mages are suited for the vanguard role.

After all, mages primarily fight magical beasts, not other humans, so even first-class mages likely have little experience in close-quarters combat.

In that case――let's give them a chance to gain experience in close-quarters combat.

"So, Elria, I'll take care of Kid Faregh, okay?"

"Yes, I think Reid is more qualified."

"And, Wiesel, can you lend me some magic equipment that I can break?"

"...Reid, do you know how much it costs to make magic equipment?"

"I don't mean to break it, but if I put my strength and magic power into it, it might break. I just need a shape, preferably something of reasonable length, like a sword."

"In that case... there was a prototype that didn't turn out as planned."

After rummaging through the bag at his waist, Wiesel unfolded the magic equipment he had taken out.

It was a simple longsword-shaped magic equipment.

"When my magic power runs out, the built-in resistances and enhancements will be removed. It'll become just a lump of iron shaped like a sword after five minutes, so be careful."

"Got it. I'll be careful not to break it."

After receiving the magic equipment, Reid swung the sword in a familiar motion.

It looked like a sword, but it felt more like a wooden training sword, which seemed like it would break easily if Reid applied even a little force.

After making sure everything was alright, he placed his hand on Faregh's shoulder.

"Let's begin, Kid."

"...Begin what? What do you plan to do?"

"It's settled, isn't it? I'll be the one to train you."

"Train me…? You can't even use magic. What are you going to teach me?"

"I may not be able to use magic, but I can still teach you how to fight in a similar way."

Saying that, Reid pointed his sword at Faregh.

"How about a mock battle? If you can land one blow on me, you win. As for me... let's see, I'll attack in about a minute, so you can attack me freely until then."

"...Giving yourself a handicap? You must be quite confident."

"I don't feel like losing, at least. If you win, I'll offer you some sort of reward within my means."

"...I see. That sounds interesting, so I'll play along."

He drew a short sword-shaped magic equipment and faced off against Reid.

"If I win――you will never call me 'Kid' again!!"

Immediately after, countless blistering and scorching-hot fireballs formed around Faregh.

"Don't think that you can extinguish them as easily as before!!"

With that, a swarm of fireballs flew towards Reid. Even if he dodged left or right, completely defending against them would be difficult. That's why Reid looked straight at them, lowered his stance, and leaped toward the fireballs.

"What――!?"

The astonishment was not because Reid was coming at him head-on.

While maintaining a low position that almost slid across the ground, Reid twisted his body in mid-air, slipping through the narrow gap between the fireballs and the ground.

As the fireballs passed by him, Reid effortlessly regained his balance by grabbing the ground with one hand.

"Whoa, that’s hot. Surrounding me wasn't a bad idea, but you need to seal those gaps with other magic."

It would certainly have been an effective move against a mage.

By surrounding them with fireballs, it forces them to defend themselves with protection magic and restricts their movements. This allows the use of a high-powered magic attack that could penetrate their protection. However, it won't be enough.

"Come on, there's still time, so keep attacking."

Smiling cheerfully, Reid leisurely approached Faregh.

Seeing such a relaxed expression, Faregh gritted his teeth and tightly gripped his short sword.

"Then... how about this!?"

He unsheathed his short sword and aimed it at Reid.

At that very moment, as he thrust the short sword forward, flames burst forth, seemingly extending the blade's reach. A fire spear was shot in a straight line, intent on piercing Reid.

It was a meticulously executed strike, propelled with precise speed.

"However――a fast strike like this is linear and easy to dodge."

Reid avoided the fire spear by slightly tilting his head.

"But you know that, too. That's why you use the magic equipment to make me aware of it, to lure me into dodging that strike, and then――"

As he spoke, Reid suddenly leaned his body. Right after, the tip of the fire spear looming behind Reid was cut in half.

"――Using that extended flame, your objective was to stab me from my blind spot."

Behind Reid, flames loom large like a whip.

Even if the initial fire spear is dodged, this two-stage attack method allows Faregh to exploit the opponent's blind spot by manipulating flames at hand.

Such surprise attacks are crucial in interpersonal combat.

"The idea itself is not bad, but it doesn't align well with your magic. Because the flame is bright and conspicuous, one would feel discomfort when the fire spear is dodged and the magic is not dispelled. Moreover, the crackling sound as the flame passes diminishes the effectiveness of a surprise attack."

Speaking thus, Reid slowly approaches Faregh with an unceasing smile, as if eagerly awaiting the next move.

"Damn it... DAMN IT!!"

Unable to stop Reid's advance, frustration appeared on Faregh's face.

"I WAS... I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE STRONGER THAN ANYONE ELSE!!"

Shouting so, Faregh stabs his short sword into the ground.

"DON’T... UNDERESTIMATE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!"

A scream that resembles more of a roar echoes through the air.

In response to it, a crimson pillar of flames erupts from the ground, ascending to the heavens. The rising pillar of flames takes the shape of spinning threads.

Within that mass of flames, a human figure materializes――a body constituted of blazing crimson flames, adorned with black-colored gauntlets on both arms.

Then, the gigantic figure manifests two fire swords while looking down at Reid.

"Stop him――<<Flame Soldier of Destruction>>!!"

At Faregh's command, the fire giant swings its fire swords at Reid.

It's a high-level magic, reaching the eighth tier, a strike that would likely engulf an ordinary mage in flames. However, it was a strike Reid could easily defend against.

If his strike can blow away Elria's tenth tier magic and shatter Alma’s <<Undead Brigade>>, then it can even obliterate the fire giant.

Even so, Reid faces the fire giant head-on.

"I'm not underestimating you."

He placed the magic equipment on his waist and extended his right arm, focusing on the fire swords. The huge fire swords were then sent high into the sky with a palm strike from Reid. With that single strike, he knocked away the giant's hand and sent the fire swords flying.

"It’s just that――I do think it's a shame."

With fluid motion, he pulled the magic equipment from his waist and slashed upward at the giant's arm from below, severing it and painting the sky in crimson red.

"Such things, if known, could be handled without consequences."

These are the skills that, in Reid's time, would have been trained from childhood, such as knocking away the opponent's sword by striking the hilt or wrist when it's raised.

With the rise of the technology known as magic, the focus has shifted from interpersonal combat to combat against magical beasts. Knowledge, skills, and experience in close-quarters combat have been downplayed in modern times.

Even if one can wield powerful magic, without proper knowledge, mages themselves cannot effectively engage in close-quarters combat against someone who excels in it.

Therefore――

"――Well, a minute has passed."

Facing Faregh, who had exhausted his magic power and was kneeling, Reid pointed his sword at him.

Behind him lay the brutally shattered black armor and the formless mass of flames on the ground.

"How… can you smile like that?"

With his head down, Faregh muttered powerlessly.

"I was supposed to be strong... I had the confidence to silence those who compared me to Caldwen's daughter by showing my strength...!"

However, that confidence had been shattered all too easily.

"And yet... my legs froze, and I couldn't move. Instead of protecting the two, I could only watch them get wounded and flee in disgrace...!"

Thus, Faregh became more keenly aware of his own powerlessness than anyone else. And yet again, he had been defeated by Reid, who hadn't even been serious. However――

"――That's why you volunteered to join us, didn't you?"

Reid's question surprised Faregh.

No matter how problematic his personality and reputation were, it seemed unthinkable that no one would be swayed by the great name and power of ‘Welminan’.

Faregh himself could have used his family name to join a team forcibly. Even so, he had chosen to join Reid's team of his own volition.

"Even though it was an unforeseen accident, Valk and Lucas are absent from this conditional examination and must face the next comprehensive examination in an imperfect state. That's why you wanted to learn something from Elria and me, to become strong enough to lead those two, right?"

"How…?"

"It's because you're a good-natured person who would think of protecting and escaping with them, rather than abandoning them. Someone like that would likely feel a strong sense of responsibility and think about doing something for their sake, wouldn't they?"

Reid said it with a smile.

From the beginning, he had noticed Faregh's intentions. He understood that it was an act for the sake of others, not selfishness. That was why he thought the role of ‘Leader’ would be fitting for Faregh.

"Besides, from what I've seen, your sense and thinking don't seem to be bad. With this, if I teach you a little, you can think and develop on your own."

In a familiar motion, Reid wielded his sword――

"――If it's you, I believe I can teach you my 'swordsmanship'."

Reid declared it with a confident smile.
