#1 is insane enough to be one of the great screwball 80's comedies, but the sequels became almost literally a TV sitcom with sequels instead of episodes. Like Guttenberg, most of the audience gave up after #3, but the producers went on to 7 & 8, and "Police Academy sequel" became the audience slang buzzword for a studio movie no one wanted.
