English Vinglish

Hey Guys, Loved the reaction! It is not unusual to not know Hindi as India does have a lot of states where Hindi is not spoken as much. almost all states have different native/regional language of their own. Also, most schools these days are English schools and we are tought English since day 1. So even though you may find young Indians who do not know Hindi often, in fact most of them will be able to speak or at least understand English very well. It is very very common for young Indians to know at least 2 to 4 languages- English, sometimes Hindi plus their mother tongue or native language. Not knowing fluent English was and still is considered to be uncool as it was perceived that English is a language that leaders, rulers, intellects and wealthy spoke (colonization side-effects) and thus it became a status symbol. As I said pretty much all schools are English medium schools. Things are changing now, as a lot of Indians do have come to realize the importance and beauty of our native languages and take pride in our diversity. After all, diversity and rich ancient culture before it was tainted by colonisers (Brits and others) is our biggest strength, our superpower! Lots of love from Canada!

Whoever recommended this, kudos to them!
