Game information, Release plans, and January

Hello everyone,

Hope you're all still alive and kickin' post Christmas. I discovered that it is the #1 time of the year for heart attacks and other stress related illnesses. Of course, I got a cold, but it was a fairly minor one. Probably the result of putting in crazy hours getting things wrapped up with my current employment.

As I said earlier in the month, I plan to release an update to Aylia's Story. What you can expect is the revamped and improved prologue and the first couple days of Chapter 1. There will be a second update with more of Chapter 1 shortly after (my guess is within 2 weeks). That should get us to about the place the turtle was at in the progress chart. I'm still finishing up the installation project that I took on 3 weeks ago, but I believe it will be wrapped up by early next week.

The update is a beta release. That means that only successfully pledged patrons of $10 or more will receive the update. I plan to solicit feedback from those testers and fix any issues I missed. When I'm happy with the feedback and status of the game, I'll do a full release. I would greatly appreciate if the update was not shared, as once something goes public, it is out of my hands. When multiple versions float around the net, it becomes more confusing for people to find the finished version and ultimately impacts their first impression of the game. I plan to release a public version after testing, so it is not like everyone won't have access to it anyways.

For those patrons who successfully pledged in April, the mega link will be emailed to you. I'm told by Patreon that there should be no issues with emailing successfully pledged patrons this time around, since I don't have any canceled pledges screwing things up. I will post a $10+ post on Patreon letting people know the emails were sent. If you DO NOT get the email, then message me. I'm still busy as hell this week, but I'll try to check online every 2-3 hours.

As a reminder NONE of these updates are pledged updates. I repeat, these are NON-PLEDGED updates, so you should not be charged at any point. After I get chapter 1 released, I'll be running a poll to evaluate how best to proceed. Therefore, there should be a January poll, and it will be a fairly important one. I also plan to finally unveil Lynne in the week after Chapter 1. She's been hiding for too long!

Thanks for your patience, I hope you had a Merry Christmas.

Meh. Do what you need to do man.

So do we have any idea when the rest of us will get a release? c.2 weeks is a little vague and non-committal... I'd like to see something that guarantees a release to the rest of your patrons. I had some time off in Jan that I was hoping to use to play this... oh well, guess I'll have to be an adult and go out and things instead...

I can understand the point of limited access to a non-pledged beta update, as otherwise anyone could sign up, get access to beta-content for free, and cancel. Still, as a latecomer, if there's any way I could pay that $10+ for it right now, I'd gladly do it. Like some others, I mistakenly thought the release would be more open, and was looking forward to trying and testing it out today, even knowing it's incomplete.

Stop complaining guys. Just be happy to get an update. I pledged and my payment went through in april, but i'd be happy either way. We finally get to see this hot awesome game

Swagmaster Supreme

An excellent post. Given the misunderstandings here and the general tone of the comments, I'd prefer to see the fragment (however large it is), linked to as soon as possible in a Patron-only post, with a disclaimer that it is a partial release that may contain undiscovered bugs, and that those who'd prefer a playthrough uninterrupted by bugs and breaks should wait for the full or interim chapter release in January. This should hopefully prevent any ill will and lost pledges from people like myself, who have decided to show their intent to support YT, but not actually done so yet. Of course the final call can only be made by YT himself.

I understand the frustration and annoyance at this announcement. It's another delay after a lengthy discussion around unrealistic timelines and regular progress updates (which went silent), which then was followed up with a statement that the late release will first be trickled out to those of us who have been around for quite a while. As one of those people, I'm not particularly annoyed, but I can definitely see where this would be disappointing as heck for newer supporters, those who weren't financially able to pledge for the HQ translation, and those who opted not to pledge for the HQ translation when told that pledge would affect only the HQ translation, and not Aylia's Story. I also understand the YT side as far as work and life causing another delay, and I'm fine with that. I can even see where the sudden code changes necessary to release only part of Chapter One might introduce bugs that could impact first impressions of the game, causing some hesitancy to rush the partial build out the door for general public consumption, as opposed to labeling it a beta test and giving it with plenty of disclaimers around potential bugs to the longest-term supporters who've demonstrated the most patience and loyalty. That makes sense from YT's perspective. That said, if that was going to be the approach, it may have been less of a PR issue to handle that release in a quiet manner, and just publicly state that there were some issues causing a delay in the full chapter release. As one of the past pledgers, I have zero issue personally with any partial release going to everyone at the beta testing tier regardless of whether they were willing and able to pledge for the HQ translation - so if that's a concern, YT, that's my vote. If it's more around the potential for there to be bugs in the release that might affect first impressions...well, I honestly don't know of a single release anywhere, on here or on any of the forums I belong to, that has been totally bug-free, and the existence of some bugs generally doesn't cause a mass exodus of support, but it's your game and your call!

I think, this is at an inappropriate time, made an incorrect decision. Why should simple things become complicated?

THE_VEZ

:( let us pay those 10$ and give all the patrons access, i was so hyped for today and now i read this, kinda makes me really sad - AND i think you should use the PAY WHEN PLEDGE (for the first time) option, so u dont ever get in this situation again and u dont need to worry about e-mail cause u can just post here

I'm quite pissed too, but give the man some rest. He's naive for many things but he still believing and working hard on the project. He even (almost) quit his job for this!

MasterQi

Lame. I understand why many people are annoyed. Thats 100% YT's fault though - if he released finished Chapter 1 before the end of 2016 like he promised we wouldnt be in this situation.

Saigon

As a lurker who recently pledged, I'm disappointed by this news. If you wanted to do it this way then that's OK, but that's what you should have communicated all this month. Not that you would do a release on the 28th to patreons, then the day before adding the subtext "Pledges from April only. You may not get the game on the 28th."

Not sure about your other people Yummy... but I am fine paying for this chunk, I'd leave it to the other 10+ but if people don't mind the charge, get everyone current involved in the update, I paid in April and am fine with you doing it again now, especially if you are giving people content. I'd make your decision before December ends though

Triune

got to say i am annoyed like the rest of them. If you had the instant payment setting on patreon i would happily pay now for beta version. Is there anyway we can Paypal you the cash if we want to to get access to a link? Your game is probably the most anticipated on the whole site and waking up n the day you thought you could download it to be told you can't is pretty damn annoying.

hazzamoffin

It does sound like that. A lot of people are very bitter about this and would probably like to get themselves to the beta tester group, so it would make sense to make the pledged update a bit prematurely so people can get into the beta if they so desire... food for thought

Systematic Chaos

I was led to believe that the "Chunk" would be released for everybody. Not cool bro.

StalkerRoguen

It's cause he did a charge for those people in April

Honestly pretty annoyed at this. If you're going to release something for people who've pledged $10+, release it to ALL of them, I don't understand the logic behind only allowing those who've pledged since April. We've all been waiting months and months and months for any kind of release, please stop pushing it back further and further and just give us some reason to keep interested in this. If you really don't plan on releasing anything for everyone for weeks (which will probably end up being months based on the past...), I honestly hope someone leaks it. And it makes me sad to say that. Take care YT, hope you don't feel too stressed about everything, I just think you're doing this release the wrong way.

Wow man talk about a total cocktease

Cory Carson

Well, I do have to say, I'm a little disappointed that I won't be able to take advantage of the early release. My decision to pledge 10 dollars didn't happen until December. That being said, I understand it's hard to trust someone who just got on board officially with your project as I have been a lurker for a long time. Still, it won't kill me to wait a few weeks longer, and myself and other here having to wait; hopefully won't have to deal with too many bugs when chapter 1 does finally get released in full. Take care of yourself YummyTiger, my last little cold ended up being 2 weeks.)

xellos49698

Now that I think about it, did you know that you'd handle the release like this some time before, or was it a kind of last-minute decision? Because if it wasn't , I'd definitly advise you to be more open about this in the future. I remember someone saying he'd call in sick for tomorrow cause of the release, imagine him being one of the people who won't get the beta now. This kind of information policy might really frustrate people and cost you patreons

Seems like it

Yes, also anyone who is below 10 won't get it either

So you're giving the beta only to 10+ pledgers why exactly? The major part of your patreons is above that line, so its not like you only have a small group of "beta testers" . I see no benefit for anyone here, in fact, its probably gonna anger the people who now have to wait another few weeks, and feel kinda betrayed as you never told anyone before that you'd handle the release this way.

YT, for those who want to give a pledge to play the game, it might be better to do a pledge up date. There are some people who want to support you and play the game.

Nine Horse Hitch

Dude to soon, to joke about Carrier Fisher.

Nine Horse Hitch

Hi, it's a little unclear in this post - if we pledge $10 after april we won't receive the email?

Miene

YT my dude I have been trying to give you my shekels for months now. I can wait. But the anticipation is getting intense.

Admiral Cheesecake

Wait, this doesn't count as a major game update? Damn it YT! You'll never take my money at this rate! No seriously, take my money, please, I want to play it.

So people that start pledging after the the April pledge will have to wait for the free release in January yes?

Tanari

Sounds good to me :) Damn I'm looking forward to play, just taking everything in minute by minute with as little prejudice as I can muster... damn it's probably going to be good :)
