This makes total sense. That black cable was shipped with some models of routers. The black cables were always intended for the AUX port.

Serial port variations used to be the bane of my existence when i worked in DC's. I'm sure at one point i spotted a device that could essentially switch around various combinations really easily without carrying 20 different variations.
