Huge Gear Haul

Drove to Kansas this weekend to pick up a huge haul of gear, including an IBM RS/6000!

Yeah getting the GPU will save you a lot of annoyance. Being as you've worked on some serious-ish IBM stuff on the channel you might be right at home in a G5, it definitely has more of an IBM than an Apple vibe to it once you get below the surface.

Mark Benson

Thanks! I believe it's at least missing the GPU... which the guy I bought it from is actually gonna send my way (he just forgot to bring it). But once that's around it'll be troubleshooting time

clabretro

Really cool haul, nice work! I know you'll probably get around to it much later on, but if you need any help with the PowerMac G5 I've got a bit of experience with those. Any idea what's wrong with it? (apart from the CPUs are sitting own the bench top!)

Mark Benson

If you ever get bored with AIX, you should also be able to install Windows NT4 for PowerPC on that RS/6000, as I think it should be a PowerPC reference platform. I even saw Michael MJD run a Motorola x86 emulator on Windows on PowerPC, so you could even run x86 software on that to totally blow your mind.

Cedric Roijakkers

thank you! I'm just over in Colorado. excited to cover a bunch of this stuff

clabretro

Just joined the group and didn't expect to see my state on here. Nice haul!

It really depends on the intelligence of the enclosure. The RA-4000 & RA-4100 were a full array on a card that spoke Fibre Channel out to the world while UltraWide (?) to the drives.

DrScriptt

I haven't dug up the docs yet but seems possible, it's definitely modular. aren't fiber drives a little different usually though? or was it common to convert from scsi drive to fibre out

clabretro

I wonder if that UltraWide SCSI module can be replaced with the RA-4000 (RAID ARRAY?) module that has the Fibre Channel interface.

DrScriptt

Definitely on the list, been slowly acquiring a bit of IBM and Cisco gear to be able to setup a Fibre Channel disk array

clabretro

Would be cool to see some Fibre Channel on the channel some day. An old workplace had FC stuff but I wasn't involved with it, so would be nice to learn more about it!

Martin Paulsen

SCSI, I should've shown the back. It has an Ultra Wide SCSI 3 module back there

clabretro

Is the Compaq storage enclosure SCSI or the Fibre Channel RA 4000 (or is it 4100)? Edit: If it's Fibre Channel, I have the utility you need to manage it. N.B. there are some restrictions on the RA 4100 / 4000 (512 GB max volume size and you need a Compaq Fibre Channel card to administer it).

DrScriptt

Some super interesting stuff. That old drive array is almost the thing I'm most interested in!

clabson> Hey ma' wanna go on a road trip to Kansas to pick up old computer garbage? clabmom> You're just like your father... what is with you guys and these silly machines? alright sure, I got nothing better to do. 10/10 haul, clabmom++, and best of all : more clabretro videos!

vivi

will do!

clabretro

Oh man. Wish I could find a haul like that here in Canada!

Aurelius

Thanks for sharing! It would be fantastic if you could include the youtube URL in the post body when you share videos, saves a few page loads for viewing.

Aaron the Tinkerer

ha, hopefully!

clabretro

Can't wait for thw RS/6000 series. It might just be your channel's Centurion.

Glen Dady

So excited to see videos on this! Great haul.

Zzyzx Wolfe

Oh man, that haul is amazing. I miss when everything was beige. 😅

Liquorist

yes! I was gonna respond to that email about it but now you know obviously haha

clabretro

Regardless I will be looking forward to your take on this gorgeous machine!

Kyle Bee

I'll be holding onto it for the foreseeable future but I'll keep ya in mind! haha

clabretro

You got it! Great. Bring it back to life for us.

John Fugedy

Yo, if you ever feel like you're done with that RS/6000 I would be interested in buying it. It's no 56k modem I know, but still interested should the need arise!

Kyle Bee

Kansas? That feels far from everywhere.
